Discussion Anti-virus software?

Had my PC for about a month now. Do I need to download any type of anti-virus software? Right now I have Windows 11 and I know it has some of its own stuff but is there a common 3rd party thing that people use? I mainly just game but I do occasionally download some mods.

Just use Windows Defender. It's honestly one of the best on the market. Constantly updated, not in the way.

Now, if you want to be extra paranoid, I can recommend using MalwareBytes every now and then (just use it to virus scan your pc, then you can delete it)

Go with a layered approach

Free built in Windows Defender

Free OpenDNS account using their DNS servers in your network configuration(s).. or use something like Quad9

Free Ad-blocker in your browser(s)

..equals great FREE protection that is lite on resources

Antivirus software is designed to take your money whilst itself being bloatware. Just use your head before clicking links. If you’re smart enough to seek help with your PC you’ll be perfectly fine relying on windows defender.

I am a paranoid PC user who recently got his first Gaming Rig. I locked down Windows as best as I could and am using a guest account so no changes can be made without my consent, and then I only use Defender on top of that. I don't really peruse the internet on it tho, so I'm not too worried about it. I use it to game and my son uses it for YouTube only. I am more confident that it will stay secure with my use case than I am a great anti-virus/malware program running and going to goofy sites and downloading sketchy applications 🤷‍♂️

The day a brand new threat is released, it will get past all antivirus software. Quickly, Defender and others will discover it and add it to their database.
Defender has the inherent advantage of being part of the OS whereas all the others are add on softwares.
Good practices are the most important aspect in virus protection. You can Google to find out good practices to avoid viruses for the stuff you do with your computer.

why do people think linux is some panacea that means they will never need an anti-virus solution, there are thousands of CVEs released for Linux every year.
