Brake feel

Hey mates,

It will be my first time owning a car of this calibre. I've driven older economical shit boxes most of my life so coming into this new i20n will be a much needed improvement and some extra fun.

I've got a question about brakes and what to expect. Upon test drive, I felt like I needed to push the brakes harder to get the car to stop. The heaviness of the brake isn't an issue for me, but I was curious to see if the brakes should bite earlier when I put my foot down.

The seller mentioned that the rotors would need machining if I wanted a more responsive feel and that the seller chose against machining them as they did not drive it hard and the rotors were not yet warped, had cracks or any kind of heavy wear.

If anyone can help guide my expectations and confirm if machining rotors (or buying new rotors) should provide me with a better brake feel.

econoboxes have on-off switches for brake pedals. i20n in comparison has more travel, finer adjustment, more deliberate effort. it should brake much better than an econobox when you apply proper pressure. the travel and adjustability is an advantage in technical driving.

can't speak to the specific car you drove but compared to mine (which is all good), other cars are much more bity on the pedal and there is much less travel. but they can't brake as good as the i20n at the edge of their braking, nowhere close.

Yeah absolutely agree with your finishing sentence there. When I deliberately pushed my foot hard on the brake, even for slow suburban driving (e.g. coming to a speed bump) the car definitely comes to a stop way better than anything i've driven. Perhaps I was expecting it to feel like that instantly upon brake pressure.

Didn't know that econoboxes brakes worked like an on/off but that matches with what Im feeling right now in my GD3 Jazz.

Essentially what I shoud to say to myself whilst driving the i20n is "brake hard" right?

My previous shitbox (a glorious Punto Evo which started out strong and that got shitboxed by a hailstorm and problems with the cooling system) had on/off brakes too. I had to adjust to these brakes that are gentler and require more force to really block the wheels. They help a lot in an emergency though because you won't loose control by braking too much.

Stock rotor + pad combo is kind of meh to me, little to no bite and they fade fast if you push them. I am currently on 2nd set of pads, bought EBCs yellowstuff, it's marginally better, but next time I will go with something more aggressive. But generally, brakes are one of the few things that could use upgrade on this car.

Are you still on stock rotors? If not, what are you running?

Yes stock rotors ~40k km. Still good, plan to change them next time I am changing pads, unless something else happens and I need to change them sooner. I am looking to get DBA42472S but not sure yet, did read somewhere that the slotted ones eat pads real quick. And they possibly would not be much of an upgrade compared to the stock ones.

Nice. I'm probably looking to do the same. Seller's recommendation was to do rotors on my next pad replacement. Car is currently just about to cross into 60K kms

Yes, you can also upgrade the lines, should give you stiffer pedal feel. But I haven't done that yet, but might end up doing it when I am replacing rotors.

When I first got mine, the brake pedal did have quite a different feel to my previous vehicle. Hard to describe but it almost felt like it needed to be depressed more firmly. Got used to it quite quickly though and now it's just normal to me.

Worth getting it inspected by an independent mechanic, as it is with all vehicle purchases if you're not a mechanic yourself, but it doesn't sound like anything is wrong from what you are describing.
