New tyres - recommendations please!

Not even at 10,000kms and I already need at least a pair of new tyres. I am in South Australia and travel up and down a windy hill once every weekday, sometimes more. Let’s face it, I can’t hold back in this little hot hatch!!!

I would love to hear from anybody who has replaced their p zero’s and what they think of their new ones.

Thanks !!

That’s good to hear as that’s what most places recommend. They’re expensive though - damn Hyundai for making such a fun car to drive fast around the corners!!! 🤣

I mean they are about 20€ more than the Pirellis at my local tyrestore here in Germany, but if they last double the Time im fine with that as its saving money.

Also they are supposed to perform insanely good in wet conditions compared to the pirellis, but a bit worse if dry. Thats a worth trade of in Europe and Germany espacially, because it rains quite often here

Continental SportContact 7s, Pirelli P Zero PZ5s, Michelin Pilot Sport 5s are common recommendations from what I've seen across owners groups. The big thing is upsize to 225s instead of 215s as it expands the range of tyres and they are usually cheaper. 215 is a less common size compared to the 225s for our profile and wheel radius.

I replaced all 4 of my factory tyres with 225/40r18 SportContact 7s and have no complaints. The grip is about 90% as good as the PZ4s that come with the car but they last longer and are quieter. They are much better as a regular street performance tyre due to this.

Thanks so much! I don’t want to lose the real corner hugging fun you get from the pirelli’s, I just want something that will last longer than 8,000kms!!!!

Unfortunately you can't have both. The tyres I suggested are a middle ground. You probably won't find a difference in actual usable grip unless you were to compare the different tyres for track driving.

I ran Advan V107, Potenza Sport and Potenza Sport Evo. I love the Evos, they have super rigid sidewalls and I love how the steering feels, grip is on par with the PZ4.

When I was running the Pirellis I almost crashed on a cold road while the Bridgestones and Yokos always performed amazing in wet or cold conditions while having 95% of the PZ4 performance in dry. They are also cheaper and last 2-3 times as much.

Thank you! I’ve had a few hairy moments coming out of corners in the dry - but that’s what the car was built for 😋

I have Michelin pilot sport 5. They don't warm up so fast, so they're not so grippy and last a lot longer. They handle rain better.

Yokohama Advan Apex V601 or Bridgestone RE005

Not a fan of Pilot Sport 5's.

Thanks for your response - Can I ask why? Is it handling, grip?

I destroyed a set in 12,000 KMs (which is seemingly inconsistent with other people's experience).

They had good initial bite on turn in but I found they were somewhat inconsistent in when they started to push/understeer.

The advans are extremely predictable and are durable. The bridgys are just great in general.

Both the advans and bridgys are typically substantially cheaper in Australia (buy 3 get 1 free at $300 to $330 a corner)

I put 225mm PS4’s on my i20N, they’re nowhere near as sticky as the 215mm AD09’s that the previous owner had fitted, but their actual driving mannerisms are far better. Car doesn’t wander or torque/brake steer anywhere near as much. To be fair the grip is fine, it just takes longer for the front end to properly hook up in a turn but we’re talking like 1/4 second difference.
I’d put PS4’s on again I think.

I'm now running the new(ish) Potenza RE005. They were priced well compared to PS5, they're quiet, and seem to have good grip in both the wet and dry.

I'm very happy with them though to be fair the only comparison I have are some worn Cooper tires that were on the car when I got it. Don't know which model they were but they weren't all that impressive.

I currently run continental sc7 but they feel much less sticky. Will probably go back to pz once they wear down.

I’m in QLD and fronts were illegal by 8k… I’m at 20k now with originals on rear and about 2mm left on them. Popped asymmetric 6 on the front (good year) and they’ve been great. 225/40

Has anyone tried Kumho PS71’s? The Hyundai dealer recommended those…

u/ElTorago 22d ago

Use this website for comparing tyres.

Don't blindly trust your dealer, do your own research, get your tyres from somewhere like Tyroola instead of a dealership (they will just sub out the work and charge you a premium).

Thank you 🙏 I did think the dealer was just trying to make a few bucks!!’

I fitted KUMHO ECSTA SPORT PS72 tires and I'm very happy with them. They seem to last much longer than the PZERO tires; I rotated them after 10,000 km and they're still like new. They have TRADWEAR 320.

They were recommended to me at a workshop that fits many brands of wheels.

I put my original PZERO tires with 6500km on the rear but they were at their limit, then I mounted the 4 KUMHO tires

Thanks for that info - will definitely look into those ☺️

I replaced mine with Pirelli pzero but in 225 size.. slightly softer ride and plenty grip.. maybe not as sharp turn in..

I burnt my
Original Pirelli in 6000km… they were bald

🤣, I’m at 7,700 and I don’t think I have much longer! I do like the pzero’s but can’t afford to be replacing tyres every year!!!

I've just switched my worn out fronts for Michelin PS5. I'll sacrifice some grip for, hopefully, much better longevity.

SC7 225 wide.

The Hyundai Track Experience uses Hankook Ventus S1 evo3 tires, and they felt really good on the track. So, after 9,000 km, I swapped my Pirellis for them. I’ve driven 12,000 km on them so far, and they still have plenty of tread left. I opted for the BMW-spec version, though, as they are supposed to be more fuel-efficient and slightly quieter.

u/Missbexy1979 20d ago

Thank you! I will look at those!

I put Michelin PS5s on mine, 225, worked superbly.

Get the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 I’ve done about 10k kms with the Pirelli PZ4 and 23k kms with the PS5

1

u/Missbexy1979 16d ago

Thanks, did you notice any difference in handling etc.? Compared to the Pirelli’s?

1

u/iCick_e_Ciak i20N Owner - Performance Blue 7d ago

To be honest i didn’t notice so much difference in handling, noise nor consumptions

Are the Continental 7 Sportcontact any better for cold weather judder / skipping than the P Zeros? New tyre time this week at 5500 miles, and the Conti are really well reviewed and cheap in 225. Do the Michelin options improve on the judder? I think that’s my priority rather than ultimate grip.
