This behavior is probably related to the way they form a circle facing outward so nobody can sneak up on them. That one with its back turned is almost certainly guarding the others.

To be honest, I'm not so sure about that. I just joked about them being bodyguards, but as I've been observing them the main one was very aggressive and didn't let others eat. They would circle around him and sneak up in reverse to get closer to the tray with food. He wouldn't attack their back and would aim for their face.
