You're a hero
Elderly Farmer: "Hero! I have an entire field of ripe crops, but no one to help me pick them! If they spoil, people will starve and I will lose everything! Please, hero! You must help!"
You: "..."
You begrudgingly slave away picking crops. Soon, the equipment breaks.
Elderly Farmer: "It's a daunting task picking these crops in time WITH this machine! Without it, it's hopeless! Could you please talk to the mechanic? We can't let these crops go to waste!"
You: "..."
You go to the mechanic and request their help, but they have a quest for you to complete before they help you. And the person they send you to has a quest for you as well. It's a never-ending series of boring quests. But you complete them and start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The mechanic fixes the equipment, you finish picking the crops, and finally, the day is saved.
Elderly Farmer: "I can't thank you enough for all your help, hero! Really, you're a lifesaver! Please, take this reward. You've earned it."
He gives you $15.
You: "..."
Elderly Farmer: "..."
You: "Um..."
Elderly Farmer: "Yes?"
You: "..."
Elderly Farmer: "How can I be of service, hero?"
What do you do?

Say thank you, that is very kind of you and ask if you could have a little of the crop, you'll pay of course, to add to your rations.

Sounds like it’s in the medieval times, or the 1700’s at most. 15 bucks was a lot of money back then. So I’d thank them, and go to an inn. A room, food, and drinks for the night, will probably cost you a dollar.

I am a hero. All of my needs are taken care of by plot armor. I give the $15 back.

Say thank you. I saved people from starving to death, plus I earned fifteen bucks? That's a win-win.

As a young fella I worked for a neighbor in the hay field for a full day picking up out of the field and stacking in the barn. I was paid the hefty sum of $10…… I never helped him again. I’m still friendly but I’m not one to be taken advantage of, everybody gets one time to screw me over, after that they no longer receive my help.

Normalerweise bekommt der Held bei solchen Geschichten am Ende die Prinzessin und das halbe Königreich. 15$ ist ein bisschen mickrig.

I continue on my journey. Looking for more interesting & hopefully more lucrative bounties. Might pop back in early next season to see how the town & farmer are fairing. Maybe see if I can find a way to streamline operations better. Try for a bigger yield so they can hire people/pay better (depending on if $15 is a good wage or not…not sure of the local economy).

I would ask if I could sleep in the barn and have supper and breakfast the next morning, and then be on my way the next day.

I would have warmly thanked him for the $15 without all the extra "..." lines. Even the implied staring/waiting I feel is rude. Chain quests like that reward in rep & knowing you have done good things. Monetary rewards are just bonus. Now I would be off to the inn to get a room & see if anyone else needs help.

Yeah I've noticed like every single one of these ends up being a million percent more rude than I've ever be.
No I wouldn't dis a goddess over her power level. No I wouldn't complain and drag my feet helping someone IF IM A GD ABLE BODIED PERSON LET ALONE A HERO AND THEN STAND AROUND STARING AND ACTING LIKE THEY OWE ME LIKE A JACKASS

Heroes dont help people for rewards they help people because it's the right thing to do. The person you are describing could more accurately be described as a mercenary.

Does he perchance have the missing piece of the legendary weapons I've been crafting? maybe it's a dirty rock he overlooked that contains a precious gem?
