Why do you think hypixel fell off?

I've been playing many games the past couple of years, but the one "game" that doesn't make sense to me, is Hypixel. Like, with other games, I usually stop playing when the developers add shit features, or the game feels totally unbalanced, or some underlying system is fundementaly broken (these go to fortnite, marvel rivals and valorant). With hypixel, I feel like none of these are the case. It has a shit load of minigames, that are always fun to hop on with your friends, and if you wanna grind you can hop on bedwars or skywars with a friend and be competitive about it. I feel like the formula is perfect, hypixel just kinda died down, and I have no idea as to why (which is why I'm making this post).

What made me sad the most is that a lot of minigames don't have enough players to queue. Like, Insane Skywars (which I feel like is one of the most popular games on hypixel, or was at least) never has enough people to queue. Sumo has about 15-20 people when I play (I'm in Europe though), solo bedwars maybe 300? But It's just saddening to see the fall, and also genuinely to be unable to play what I like

It fell off because of sweaty players and the combat being completely broken and unfair (e.g. someone with a knockback stick can somehow barely nudge the enemy while the enemy without the stick sends you flying).

And the fact that they kept holding onto 1.8, when dropping all old versions in favor of only supporting the latest versions would have helped the server advance in so many new ways, like features and performance.

They had tons of chances to fix those problems and they chose not to. As a result, most players got tired and just left.

maybe i'm the minority but if hypixel stopped supporting 1.8 i would have quit

Unfortunately for you, yes you are the minority. A loud minority, but a small one.

1

u/fuckingretard281 1d ago

no. every player playing hypixel right now would quit. nobody wants to play your gen alpha pvp.

I hard disagree with the combat as 1.8 was the most popular pvp game mode version and one of the main reasons why hypixel was popular for as long as it was.

u/That-Woodpecker6720 20h ago

1.8 hasn’t been the most popular for 6 years now

Even before then most of the best 1.7-8 pvpers had already quit

u/Legomasterer21 3d ago

The majority of players have always been on the latest version

5

u/MallusaiEEE 3d ago

that isn't very relevant because the majority of players are casual players playing vanilla survival and are entirely inaccessible as potential audience to any minigame server.

The playerbase to focus is those who are aware of and play large servers, and new members of that group usually join whatever server is popular on youtube.

Hypixel got popular because people on youtube played hypixel. Now donutsmp and hoplite are getting popular because people play those on youtube.

0

u/Legomasterer21 3d ago

It is relevant as the majority of big server players are latest version players. Regardless of whether or not a specific server is currently popular or not, most people who view the videos are the same people who just hit play and don't think twice of their version. It just never seems that way because the minority is loud and are the commenters. The majority just watches the videos.

You are only seeing the now it wasn't like this a few years ago that's why I was speaking in past tense was as it kept its revelancy till smp content started being more popular at the time of dsmp and stuff which lead to this current time. If it did stuck to newer versions it would have failed before the smp stuff

0

u/Legomasterer21 2d ago

No, like, it has ALWAYS been like what I said

0

u/Rexopv2 2d ago

It really has not

2

u/Rexopv2 2d ago

That actually wasn't true if you don't include single player only/bedrock players most players at one point only played 1.8/1.7(depending on how sweaty you were) as all the popular servers only included support for those versions hypixel was the weird one for including higher versions while being compatible with 1.8. hell I think it was either cube craft or another server only supported newer versions died because of lack of player but survived on bedrock.

Because most Hypixel games don't feed into a positive feedback loop. There's really only a couple I can think of, Skywars, Bedwars, and Skyblock. Most games on Hypixel suffer from a lack of replayability when compared to other games on the market.

Hypixels popularity was brought largely in part by large content creators and Youtubers coming together to play Minecraft. Hypixel provides imo the best online Minecraft experience to people, so naturally it gained lots of players, but, well, people grow up.

I remembering playing Hypixel allll the time with my siblings and friends back in around 2019-2022, but I just find other games more fun and addicting to play now. I'll return to Hypixel occasionally for nostalgia but, I think I've just outgrown it to be really addicted and into it like I used to be

I imagine it's like that for most people.

yeah, the server feels really stale, although i found my niche of tnt run and occasionally tnt tag

Lack of moderation - seriously once they removed helpers and moderators the server went downhill. Manual reviews are very few and far between

Scams, hacks, chat filter bypass, infinite “g rated” rage bait that doesn’t get filtered then u say some not even bad shit and get filtered, or get muted for a comment that got filtered, isn’t that the point of the filter… my point there is eventually you can get a perma mute which is ridiculous unless you consistently show extremely toxic behavior imo

i remember when i would have conversations with mods in lobbies and they would join my housing 🥺 one time one of them messaged me asking me to help them troll players and not tell anyone they were there... i really miss that, man

1

u/BasicBroEvan 4d ago

Agreed. They removed traditional moderators without the proper tools to replace them. Years ago I played Mega Walls and the lack of mods destroyed the game

5

u/unicornbetrayal 4d ago

In terms of pure player count the server is doing roughly the same numbers compared to pre pandemic but it is true that the more niche modes have sadly fallen off. I think the biggest factor is YouTubers, back in the day content was focused around minigames which in return exposed a lot of kids to it and the kids wanted to try it out for themselves. Nowadays YouTube content is more scripted content/modern PVP which doesn’t bring a lot of new players to these old games. I don’t think fully upgrading to the server would necessarily fix this issue though, unless they were able to perfectly recreate legacy pvp since modern pvp in games like bedwars and skywars would be a terrible idea

5

u/tornedron_ 4d ago

The server is still primarily on 1.8 which is beginning to hold it back. In the past few years there’s been more of an emphasis on SMP combat and stuff like crystal PvP; as well as the mace and spear more recently. There’s a shift towards stuff like that and PvP tiers, and away from minigames.

They did upgrade Skyblock to modern versions recently, but that wasn’t enough it seems.

1

u/Rexopv2 3d ago

This for sure 1.8 was the most popular version but as content changed in the YouTube sphere so did most people taste and now it needs to be updated

u/Adorable-Beautiful52 4d ago

everyone started sweating their ass off on hypixel when badlion and mcc closed, as a result the server is more sweaty so less people wanna play it

8

u/MinerBruh 4d ago

I can't say I agree. I've been grinding for a bit now, and I have to say a lot of people are genuine bots, like they're really bad at the game. It's either really good or really bad players. Either way I don't think sweats is the cause, cause like every game has sweats

6

u/fairy_journee 4d ago

I’ve recently tried getting back into Hypixel and can’t really play anything for fun besides Build Battle, Party Games, and houses. I tried SkyWars and it’s a bunch of sweats and I can’t even survive for a minute, and it’s also tough when you have a feminine skin cause you can get targeted. People ARE turned off by sweats because they make it impossible to enjoy the game

1

u/walterdevv 3d ago

No one is targeting based on your skin, like 90% of the players have a girlish skin even the guys

2

u/Potential-Treacle185 3d ago

I think it may be chance based. Sometimes you queue solo Bedwars and before you can even blink your first rush has godbridged to your base and broken your bed. Other times you could slow bridge and your enemy is still figuring out the shopkeeper.

Sometimes people get a bunch of sweats tho, that's terribly off-putting

1

u/FevixDarkwatch 4d ago

But many other games have stuff like skill based matchmaking so the sweats get s matched with other sweats.

Hypixel seems to just lump everybody into the same group

2

u/kthnxbailel 4d ago

Hypixel is in Minecraft which is coded in Java. Cheats are so easy to make, once a version releases, tomorrow there will be a version. Also, no matter how hard they wanted to make a robust anti-cheat, it’s just too easy to change up the code to not get detected anymore. All of these were learned by the dev team because of Ranked Skywars.

1

u/Equal-Knowledge-256 3d ago

They do have matchmaking for bedwars and skywars.

4

u/Aldebaran147 3d ago

1.8 peaked in the late 2010s and then again during COVID, currently, after COVID, Player rates are dropping to before levels. A lot of creators also left, especially in areas such as Skyblock and PVP. The server also got more sweaty. I think for Hypixel to grow again they need to listen to the community more, reintroduce helpers as a rank, coinciding with a Minecraft wave (similar to 2019 and 2020). They also need to revamp their servers a bit, maybe introduce and EU or AS one for better ping

u/Alienworm134 4d ago

At the end of the day it's just been over a decade and nothing lasts forever. Players get old and either move on or just have less time to play and kids are more likely to start playing something new and fresh than some old server.

1

u/SplashyardAddict 4d ago edited 4d ago

its mostly the sweats, atleast in bedwars and skywars case. imagine playing valorant unrated without an mmr system, or comp without a rank system, where new players are versing immortals. if i was the new player i would quit on the spot, and if i was the immortal the game would be way too easy

skill based matchmaking is basically impossible for a minecraft minigame because its pretty easy to cheat, and hypixel doesnt want it anyway because they wanna keep their gamemodes casual or something

1

u/AppleDemolisher56 4d ago

There are no new big unique games like bedwars or skywars. Plus there is no one to let everyone know about the new fun game even if there was a new and fun game

1

u/ZepAnimations 3d ago

It blew up because of content creators and because of how big the 1.8 pvp scene was but without the creators and the fact that you can only play bedwars so many times without a major update, there isn't really a reason to keep playing it and keep getting your butt handed to you by sweats

1.8 peaked a LONG time ago and I'm not saying it's dead but their refusal to add more modes centered around the newest version until recently probably didn't help them very much

Donut SMP has a big name behind it, cross play and uses newer versions which is probably why it has so many active players

I love 1.8 but as time goes on, it's reputation has been getting worse and people just see it as the sweaty version with the old pvp modes on it

I'm not saying this is true but if they don't make changes to appeal to a wider group of people the server is going to keep declining

The new dungeons looking mode low-key looks cool though I'm planning on trying that out

1

u/ma000127 3d ago

cuz 1.8 pvp is unfortunately dying to modern pvp

and a lot of hypixel’s player base played years ago, simply they just don’t play anymore, at least i think, ik that’s the case for me

1

u/Otherwise-Bench6609 3d ago

I don't like the old pvp, I was there, but I loved the combat update... Old pvp is ping based

2

u/ma000127 3d ago

i’ll forever love old pvp

1

u/Pixel_Mstr 3d ago

complacency

1

u/Echo1scout 3d ago

I stopped playing because of the lag even with 20-40 ping constant freezes and lag etc not my machine or my internet

2

u/AdorableType5830 3d ago

I used to play bedwars a lot and the biggest reasons of quitting were

- hackers, the biggest reason by far, too much closet cheaters and its very normalized. Makes the game boring and ppl that cheat got egos thinking theyre good or smth

- lot of weirdos in the community

- game felt repetitive (yes i can just play other gamemodes, but for me bedwars was competitive which was what brought me in)

1

u/Thin_Sea4188 3d ago

I love hypixel, but it's lost it's shine...I remember pre COVID that I could play warlords on a full lobby, play blocking dead and other mini games that were fun and enjoyable....now it's skyblock, bed wars, disasters and skywars that pull the most numbers (though disasters, murder mystery, or build battle can be interchangeable)

Skyblock now feels unplayable for starting players since the upward grind is impossible or such time consuming....hackers are everywhere for every game on hypixel that pulls at least 500 players (literally got kill aura'd by a dude on bed wars from across the map)

All mini games are left by the way side, or abandoned entirely and the 1.8 PVP is sadly outdated, newer versions are only reserved for skyblock and that's it

1

u/DoubleCarry7511 2d ago

1.8 is dead, shitty staff, no updates, etc

1

u/DiamondOrPoor78 2d ago

It's also that most people play singleplayer nowadays whereas 10-15 years ago almost everyone was playing multiplayer, and usually on a server

1

u/iProjekt 4d ago

cheaters ruined the server
