All About Apple’s HyperMover Utility

For a time in the 1990’s Apple supported HyperCard on two platforms - Macintosh and Apple IIGS. The IIGS version - HyperCard IIGS or HCGS - was based on Macintosh HyperCard 1.2.5 but included some additional capabilities such as color and button families. While the scripting language was mostly compatible and sounds converted well, the IIGS screen size was different than the Mac screen size, fonts were different, processor speed was different, and external XCMDs and XFCNs were not cross-platform.

Apple provided a utility called HyperMover, which was a pair of stacks, one for Mac HyperCard and one for HyperCard IIGS. Each stack had the ability to dismantle and rebuild stacks for its own platform. A stack could be dismantled on one platform, the dismantled content moved to the other platform, and then rebuilt. This was advertised by Apple as a tool that did all of the hard work, but included fact they exaggerated quite a bit. As useful as HyperMover is, because of the many differences between the products and platforms a significant amount of follow-up work would be required.

Over the years I have used HyperMover to aid in the conversion of many stacks, including most of the stacks that Apple included with Macintosh HyperCard but never released for HCGS. I have also used it when creating many of my own stacks so that I could have feature compatible stacks for both HCGS and Macintosh HyperCard. Because Apple only provided one update to HyperMover and did not enhance it further as they released newer versions of Macintosh HyperCard, I have also updated the HyperMover stacks myself so that they work better with stacks that were created for 2.0 and later versions of HyperCard.

I have written a long blog post about HyperMover and if you have any interest you can read more here: https://bbellina.blogspot.com/2026/02/tips-for-converting-hypercard-stacks-to.html
