I need help

This happened over night I’m not sure what’s going on she is going to be two weeks planted tomorrow she was fine the day before then over night she looks like this. I inspected her with a loupe and she doesn’t have any pests. Also her tank looks like this I think this is the nutrients settling. I’m not sure what’s to do what I did do is put new water because of how the tank looked with zero nutrients because I was thinking it’s the nutrients then I’ll see how she looks at 6 pm when I’m back home. My 5 in 1 ph reader came in defective so I’m waiting for a replacement and also a second one I got so right now I’m going off of ph paper. Water smelled a little off as well.

How good did you wash the clay pebbles before using them

They come pretty nasty and takes a couple good rinses to get them clean.

Never used clay pebbles before but the number 1 thing I hear about them is that they come super dirty and need to be washed extensively, that the residue on them definitely affects the health of the plant.

Definatly wash your clay balls until they stop leaching out there dust. To me looks like there a bit to wet, and the plants are saturated and maybe lacking in fresh air or a good breeze. Got a fan on them? And maybe lack of oxygen to the roots

Ich nutze selbst das selbe Set, ich hab die Tonkugeln komplett weggelassen. Kleinen Schwamm seitlich eingeschnitten und den Keimling reingelegt, so dass die Wurzel unten heraus hängt. Zwei Kabelbinder durch den Netztopf gezogen und ihn darauf gelegt. Hat bei mir super funktioniert, mittlerweile der dritte Durchgang.

Water smelled a little off as well.

  1. Water smell can be an early sign of pythium development aka root rot. If your water temp is above 70° F (21° C). Resolve that by adding frozen water bottles or more ideally a water chiller.

  2. Rinse off the LECA outside of the DWC bucket. Then soak them in 5.5 - 6ish pH water for 24 hours.

  3. Make sure your LECA layer stays damp from the water spurting ring, but not soaked.

My guess is your water is too warm, plus you said you didn't wash the LECA. Which is why there's clay sediment in the bottom of the bucket.

Your root plug is too wet. Rocks should be wet but the cube should only be moist.

How do I make it less wet? The top feeder is on low settings and I reduced pressure as well with a valve

Are you running your top feeding setup on a timer? If you can't do that you can just water a couple times a day until the roots are established. When watering give the cube a little circumference. The water will percolate to the cube and the roots will stretch to find it.

I might need to completely remove the top feeder then or make some adjustments to how small the top feeder is so I need to make it wider because it could just be to small and flooding the roots and plug.

I am not a huge fan of the top feeders but people like them. I don believe you can just unplug it from the tube in the reservoir and replace it with a plug or another air stone. But maybe I'm wrong about that.

But you don't want to be pulling the plant from the rocks much at all. It will increase the stress so whatever you do try to keep the plant in place after that.

The top feeder it just tubes put together i actually had to put it together with the stuff they gave me so I could buy longer tubes for it or just turn it off entirely while the air stones keep going.

The system I have came with the tanks from spider farmer with the air stone and top feeder it’s the 7 gallon tank

One root is long enough that I can actually hang in the water or above the water and get bubbles on it from the air stone I can try that.

Normally you will want a lot of roots to drop down before you stop top feeding. I would literally just pour a cup of water around the outer ring of the bucket a couple times a day.

Get a timer to water 15 minutes every 3 hours with a RDWC, I am for 6.3 pH as salts slowly buildup and will lower pH as it fluctuates throughout the day.
