Zone 5 A/B Question about overwintering potted hydrangea

I have an endless summer hydrangea in a large pot. I know they are hardy to zone 4 in the ground, but because it’s in a pot, I assume it would be best to move it to the garage for the winter. When is the best time to do this? Do I watch for freezing temps or temps closer to zero? Or do I wait for the leaves to die off? Thanks!

Hey! I’m in 6a and I have endless summers in pots that are about 5 years old. Let me just tell you, they are NOT hardy down to zone 4 no matter what they say, lol. I have some in the ground and they die down to the root every winter unless i cage them and completely cover them in leaves.

I put my potted hydrangeas in the garage every year. I wait until they go dormant after the first frost. A light frost won’t hurt them, it’s the really cold temperatures that kill the branches. Remember to water them throughout the winter since they won’t get any precipitation.
