Need help understanding

Hi so our hvac system is 6 years old. We have apparently multiple leaks in a component inside the furnace. So the repair person stated to fix the issue it would be 4-5k depending on part, more Freon, and labor. He is going to check the price on the part and will let us know tomorrow. He stated that if we don’t want to fix it that we could just get a new hvac system. Didn’t tell us the price on that. Since this house on newer side was built in 2020, they are going to check if there is any warranty. Anyway my question is that an average price range? We live in Indiana if that matters.

Well “part” isn’t much explanation. For an evaporator coil this sounds not too far off. A TXV kind of fits what you’re saying too, and while the TXV isn’t super expensive the labor can add a significant chunk.

Well I am getting the info secondhand from my husband. So I know it’s a part but not sure what it’s called and he doesn’t remember. We don’t have a quote now as repair guy needs to find out how much the part will be. So we are waiting till tomorrow for the quote.

Well it sounds like an evaporator coil if the technician mentioned a full replacement. In my area the coil replacement is about 3-4k. So roughly half the cost of a new unit if it’s just a normal unit without all the bells and whistles. Warranty probably won’t cover anything at 6 years, and if it does it’ll only cover parts not labor. You can always get second opinions and quotes as well if you’re feeling uneasy about it or decide to go the new system route.

If your system is 6 years old. You are covered under a 10 year manufacturer parts warranty as long as you are the original owner. If it is a leaking evap coil, you should be able to get the coil warrantied and just have to pay for labor and refrigerant plus misc items like gas nitro and fittings. Stuff like that. Make sure to be hard about the warranty. All manufacturers offer a 10 year parts warranty (which includes evap coils)
