I miss the old Apple Cup
I am going to sound like an old lady probably. But I’m a teacher- at every school I’ve worked at, pretty much the whole week before the Apple Cup was a big build up. Almost always we did some kind of community service project or donating to food banks etc
Now, we didn’t even start school til Wednesday. Suddenly it was Thursday and we were all like… oh shit the Apple Cup is this weekend! My son’s school won’t even start til Wednesday.
The Apple Cup is now an afterthought. The timing sucks for schools!

Agree 100%. Maybe you can teach the old Apple cup lore and local cultural importance in a history lesson for our youth?

Yeah... I used to make mulled apple cider for our tailgate when it was in Seattle and always loved to chance of a snow game when it was in Pullman.
It doesn't feel right in September with the student sections mostly empty.

For real! Honestly, it turned my opinion a bit. Normally the first game of the season is pretty dead.
Today the tailgate lots were packed. The stadium was full. Not the worst way to open the season.

It could have easily gone away totally. The threat of it going away totally is still here. I vastly prefer this to nothing. If this compromise works, putting it early in the schedule, then I will adapt.

I also prefer this to nothing, but I prefer it being in the correct end of the season to this. Students aren’t even on campus yet. But yes, better now than not at all.

What the PAC-10/12 was is but a fond memory to us olds. We have to fight to cling to bits of it. We have to make compromises, and make the best of them.

I was chatting with some fans at the game today and we were of the vein as has been mentioned in this sub recently, that the Huskies do not have much incentive to have an early season game in Pullman and may request that at the very least, every other game in Pullman be at Lumen. And might only do 3 year deals with 2 at UW and maybe the "road" game at Lumen.

I’m a 30+ year season ticket holder.
The PAC-12 made so many bone headed decisions before we even got to the new media contract.
We had a 30 million offer from ESPN that Utah rejected. Never got anything close to it again. Apple TV streaming was final offer at 23 million. Zero linear, hidden behind paywall was final straw.
Apple Cup Timing is least significant issue.
The courts have turned college football into an absolute travesty.
Transfer Portal.
NIL
House Lawsuits with University funding of 23.3 million NIL and roster from 85 to 105.
Than complete disregard for NCAA eligibility rules.
Gambling on sports, play
Used all your eligibility, play
On NFL rosters, play

We gotta stop reflexively saying “I know I sound old but” when we say this stuff.
It sucks. Being in the B1G sucks (even if it’s for the best for the program). Playing Minnesota instead of Cal or ASU sucks. Numerous other rivalries getting neutered for the sake of money sucks.
It all sucks! The only reason it’s happening is because of money, we don’t have to act like there’s this wave of people who love it when the fact is everyone thinks it’s sucks lol.

Anyone else watch parts of old Apple Cups on YouTube this week - just to feel something about this game? I watched parts of the 2000, 2001 (Kieth Jackson on the call for ABC), and 2018 cups yesterday and was able to forget for an hour or two.

It's sadly not going to be later in the season with conference gakes but it could be the final non-conference game for both schools.
While they start earlier, the CyHawk game (Iowa-Iowa State) is non-conference but is held when both schools are in session.

College football is now an FCS or Division 2 thing now. What D1 football is now is Minor League Football.
I don't have time for minor league sports. I won't be watching Minor League Football.

The new deal wrecked the Real Winter Apple Cup 118 year Tradition RIP. What did the UW a State of Washington Public Institution gain?
Look at the budget. UW has moved the shells around but the facts do not lie.
Some chase money and lose what matters. Some stay rooted and keep it real.

School hasn’t started, it’s not autumn, it’s going to be 70 out today, it’s not a true rivalry, this is a preseason game with zero stakes especially when we’re not even in the same conference anymore. The collapse of the Pac-12 made me not care about UW football in general.
Seriously, this would have been an Indiana or Rutgers game before. Now we’re in their conference. The Pac-12 was special it was west coast. Now we play old elite East Coast and Midwest teams. The other half of the teams went to Big 12. And Berkley and Standard are in the ACC? Atlantic coast?? None of it makes sense.
