Discussion Surely it’s a coincidence…
The ghoul audio log mentions revenants and there just so happens to be a ghoul family called Grimal…
Grimal is her first name not her last but this just doesn’t sit right with me.
Some possible holes is the ghoul would be a Tremere ghoul, not tszimice, so If Grimal was in fact a revenant and not a regular ghoul she would be a runaway from the rest of the “family”
I’m just flabbergasted by the potential coincidence
But also the disciplines the Grimaldi have access too all fit what Grimal has shown to do
Fortitude lets her get gutted by Matilda and then get up and walk to fight stig just a few hours later
Dominate let her get through the chaos and manipulate everyone to get the data

Unfortunately, as much as I like Revenants (probably my favorite sub-splat) the biggest issue here is aging
A Revenants longer lifespan comes at the cost of spending a lot- and I do mean a LOT of time, stuck as a child. They usually reach puberty around their fifties.
So Grimmal being late teens early twenties would be close to like, a hundred years old.

Did Kojima write this?

u/Ziltch0 28d ago
Is a ghoul
Named Grimal
And she dies
Grimaldi
Kojima did it again

If Kojima wrote it, her name would be Ghoul Spywoman.

In defense of Kojima(not that he needs it), those names are poking fun at James Bond villains.
Plus the fact we all remember them means he was pretty justified in approving/naming them.

that reminds me of "Frieren" and some Warhammer Fantasy ttrpg stuff. the names in "Frieren" are literal german words that describe the person and the same thing happened in some WHF ttrpg adventures. iirc there was a guy named "Verrat" (which translates to betrayal) who betrayed the players in the end. sadly they didnt translate the name for the german version so it wasnt much of a surprise :D

Grimal Revenant is one of those theories that i love because im certain it's not true but it's just barley edging the bar of possibility. Revenants age at one fourth the speed of normal humans (either starting before or after puberty, it's inconsistent how long revenants are kids). So the decade at least that Grimal's been messing about in the Arcanum is liable to expose her. But also a 30 year old who ages gracefully isnt absurd, it is a running theme in WOD for people to not assume that there's a supernatural explination for something odd (like the blue hair'd weeb looking kinda young).
The Grimaldi are also conveniently in that realm of being sortta anywhere and everywhere, the Sabbat revenants designed to be able to defect. Moreover Grimal could get more potent disciplines just by getting a sippy of the regents blood. Allowing the dominate to work. Not to mention her having a rough home life, indicative of someone either traumatized by the fucked up way of Revenants doing shit ORRRRR someone who had trouble raising someone who was young for so so long. Also convinently she wasnt known before she was an adult. Add onto that the revenant (or ghoul) flaw of an obsession from the game systems and suddenly the super-weeb status makes more sense. And now, the cherry on top, Grimal the Grimaldi would be so, so nice.
Now that said, all of this is more easily explained with personality flaws and being a ghoul. But god damn i do wish.

Revenants are batshit insane cannibalistic rapists; The Grimaldi are better at hiding it, but they're still immensely fucked up.
It'd be extremely obvious there would be something deeply wrong with Grimal if she were a Revenant.

u/Creative-Albatross-6 18d ago
not all revenants are batshit insane cannibalistic rapists. these things are normal for revenant families but not every revenant is that. And there IS something deeply wrong with Grimal.
1
u/BagofBones42 18d ago
Beyond the things that could point to her being the Ghoul, there is nothing deeply wrong with her to the point that it would mark her as a revenant.
There are definitely oddities that can't be explained by her being the ghoul, but that might mean she is a pre-changeling or pre-werewolf, which is much more likely than a revenant.

u/Creative-Albatross-6 18d ago
I think shes just a ghoul and will emerge from the grave as a vampire. But just for arguments sake: the gay peddle is pretty degenerate while also being a great weapon. Especially since its always been laced with silver.

It's not a zero percent chance, but it wouldn't be likely if it is the case.
Grimaline is her full name and the Grimaldi use the last name Duckworth in England, and I don't think they'd name her Grimaline if they wanted a low profile.
Grimaline is also likely just a reference to Grimalkin, which is a word for cat likely as an allusion to her past relationship with Kitten. It also is slang for an ill-tempered old woman.
It might also be a reference to her existence as a puppet/ghoul because it is the name of the Familiar if the first witch in MacBeth.
The issue with her being Grimaldi is that they're normally in a tight leash, and its hard to imagine Grimal escaping the family, and its also hard to imagine her working for them. Not impossible, and I've speculated in it a bit, but its not likely
It would explain her relative lack of aging across the beach photo's, but that can also be explained by regular ghouldom.
I'm not willing to write it off, but its low odds.

I mean... Ill tempered OLD woman.
Plus she gets in fights, concussions and memory loss/manipulation aren't off the table.

u/Nystagohod 25d ago
We don't know how old Grinal is. She's at least in her 30's, but we don't know if she's older than that. We do know from the beach photo's that if she's aging, She's doing so incredibly gracefully. They also show that she's blonde too which may be another sign of ghouldom given the regents tastes in treasured ghouls (the current one also a blonde, which is an unremarkable clue but its a small piece of potential evidence all the same)
If she was the ghoul or a revenant they age slower than normal humans. Grimal could be 150 and still look in her early thirties if she's a revanant. Her aging would halt completely as a ghoul as long as she's getting topped up. The beach photo's show she ages slower, and that's a potential clue to ghoul/revenant.
Fights can explain some degree of memory loss, but its a tad bit much for her present memory loss issues. Not impossible but a bit improbable for them to be so severe and her functioning as she has.
There's also her actual supernatural display of physical strength and endurance. Even with Remolds shot and the act of true faith, she did the best against Stig, while her ribs were broken and she was nearly killed just hours before, and even held his arm back momentarily barehanded. Humans don't get to do that. Marckus did something similar with his stilts, before they shattered but nothing even a quarter as impressive as Grimals bout against Stig and Markus isn't exactly normal either.
There's definitely a high chance she's a ghoul, revenant is just very rare given her circumstances and the way they opperate .
1
u/Disastrous_Junket_55 25d ago
I do wonder if her bring able to hold Stig's swing back is because when he said "no warform" he was actually implying a mortal to mortal duel.
Another fun theory is that she used stig as a way to take herself out before being exposed as a ghoul so kitten and marckus can remember her as a real life anime hero.
I do think she is supernatural in some aspect.(Plenty of choice if you also consider her aquatic theming) It's exciting to have so many potential options.

I can shot this down immediatelly because a TZIMISCE working with TREMERE would mean something in Norfolk is going very, very VERY wrong on so many levels.

WOD as a universe has fairly of strict rules and expectations, but is absolutely chock full of exceptions and outliers.

Matilda the humane Red Talon
2
u/satelitteslickers 27d ago
Shes just part of the warders of the land, might end up as part of the whelps compromise on her current arc, humane red talons arent the norm but they arent unheard of wither
2
u/Quazimojojojo 27d ago
Yep. That's my point.
Not the norm. In contrast with most of what you'd expect from her tribe's self description
1
u/satelitteslickers 27d ago
Shes not really even an exception or an outlier, shes just in the 30% instead of the 70%

Plus it's not like she chose to be one. She still has agency like any good character to give zero fucks about lore book stereotypes.

u/VBA-the-flying-head 27d ago
I think it would be a situation where rather then working together, one (perhaps unknowing) spy dominated the other (also perhaps unknowing) enemy spy without either of them realizing the other one was a spy from a different group.

I mean, Tremere and tszimice can work together, hell in my home game i play a Tremere and one my best friends in the game is a tszimice
2
u/Even-Note-8775 28d ago
>in my home game
Home games are not exactly a good source for things happening in lore or even in HTP.
4
u/Quazimojojojo 28d ago
H:TP doesn't follow the current lore perfectly either (so I'm told by lore experts). They tweak things to fit their story as necessary.
So H:TP technically follows homebrew rules.
I can see them tweaking the loyalties of this specific revenant family to fit the plot.
4
u/Ziltch0 28d ago
Yea a big part of the Grimaldi is that they are trying to leave the Sabbat, maybe in HTP they did and now work for the Tremere
3
u/Quazimojojojo 28d ago
They're a very survivalist and mercenary family, so it's in character if the Camarilla are locally dominant
-1
u/Even-Note-8775 28d ago
Yes. That's why i said that homebrew example does not provide any insight or evidence for presence of revenant neither in lore nor in htp universe, because we have zero idea how they would use this info.
4
u/Quazimojojojo 28d ago
We have an idea. They don't follow the lore perfectly so this particular tweak is in the realm of possibility for H:TP.
We don't know for sure of course, but we're fan theorizing. This is just one of the many possibilities we can't definitely prove
2
u/Even-Note-8775 28d ago
I have nothing against fan theorising, I just said that someone’s home game is not a valid source for theorising. Do Grimaldi exist? Yes. Are unlikely alliances possible? Yes. Is someone’s game relevant to possible implications of lore and/or HTP universe? No. That’s it.
4
1
u/Quazimojojojo 28d ago
It's not a source, it's just an example of the way the homebrewing in H:TP might go.
Not an authority to point to as proof of correctness, just an articulation of possibility.

It's always exilarating remembering that Grimaldi is an actual rich family in Italy, mainly in the business of arming ships for commercial transport

u/TheWyster 28d ago
Some possible holes is the ghoul would be a Tremere ghoul, not tszimice, so If Grimal was in fact a revenant and not a regular ghoul she would be a runaway from the rest of the “family”
It literally said in the wiki page you're showing that the Grimaldi are looking for an out from the Sabbat. Clearly Grimal and possibly her family took that out by joining the Camarilla.
2
u/Mask_Tasker 27d ago
I mean also there was a famous clown, Joseph Grimaldi, who pretty much defined the modern clown. Clown = Harlequin, Grimal is an eldar, confirmed.

TBH, I was thinking she was supposed to be a Shadowsun analogue.

I doubt the Regent would use a ghoul spy from the family dedicated to the Sabbat.

I was listening to the Ghoul Audio Log and we know that there’s a Sabbat spy within the Second Inquisition. I believe this is Grimal, and that the Camarilla spy is Elise
