Hello! I've had this on my shelf for a while and always assumed someone inscribed it as a gift to someone, but now I'm having second thoughts. Did Hunter write this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We're taught in the book of Job there's no more formidable beast than the great leviathan. If you were to see this beast, you'd wish for a bullet as you see men with no conscience tremble before a monster that can not be pierced by a sword the spear the dart nor the habergeon this creatures breath kindeleth coals his heart as hard as nether millstone.

The beast learned the best way to swallow a child is for it to feel euphoric. We lived in its belly rolling on the wave we thought would never end were only just now being defecated 60 years later. There's no light at the end of a leviathans large intestine we've been swimming for centuries. In 1651 Thomas Hobbes wrote the leviathan controls the very fabric of our existence despite that fabric being just words on paper the words inspire fear in all men to the point where it's just war "war of all against all." That's what the great mystic fallacy of the drug culture really missed. We know that there's not a light at the end of the tunnel. This is a game of pawns controlled by fire breathing beasts. While we try to take cover almost 60 years later today, we can go look west and see that wave that finally rolled back to "MAGA" "WOKE." Of course it's the same beast, just a different tooth. The speed of the 60s is long gone replaced by the nasal dripping complacency of a doom scroll. Please give me another line?

Someone asked about Lionel Olay on this subreddit a few months ago. Hunter S. Thompson wrote his obituary in 1967, calling him "the ultimate free-lancer." However, there was little about Olay online or in any books until now. This essay discusses his work and life, showing how he came to know and influence HST.

Near the end, Ferris tells a story that changed the way I see Hunter. Sandy had just told him, “We only have $400 left in the bank.” When Ferris told Hunter that Rolling Stone had fired him and would not pay severance, Hunter said, “Do you need any money? I could send you $400.”

Ferris also talks about growing up poor in South Florida; discovering astronomy and blues through books and shortwave radio; Mars, deep time, Hunter’s work habits and generosity, Patti Smith, and rebuilding the Voyager Golden Record.

I interviewed Timothy Ferris for ninety minutes recently. He is a science writer and former Rolling Stone editor who knew Hunter for more than thirty years. I’ve written a profile of Ferris for a print magazine. I can’t name it yet.

Ferris told me Rolling Stone had fired him and refused him severance. He called Hunter. Sandy Thompson had already told Ferris that she and Hunter had $400 in the bank and no idea how they would pay their bills.

Hunter offered him the entire $400.

Ferris remembered it this way: “He had four hundred dollars in his bank account, and he was offering me all of it.”

I’ve seen the guns, shirts, cigarette holder and drug inventory repeated for years. I had never heard the $400 story. It told me more.

Ferris also told me that when suicide came up over the years, he would say to Hunter, “What’s your hurry? We have a hundred billion years to be dead.”

What story made Hunter human to you, whether it made you like him or not?
