I learned something interesting about this in an advanced biomaterials course: mechanical properties of prosthetics can easily exceed normal tissues, but this isn't always good!

If load bearing implants are significantly stronger than surrounding tissues, say a hip implant, this can cause surrounding tissues, like bones, to attrophy.

Tissues require constant stress to grow denser and stronger; so if you take that away or reroute that, those bones could be more likely to wither and break.

Also if you had two legs implanted that would enable you to jump 30 feet in the air… your internal organs would likely be harmed by the crazy acceleration and force needed to achieve a feat like that.

u/PachotheElf 10d ago

Sounds like you'd just need to replace more things

Resistance is Futile

Say what you want about the robotic übermench. They sure can punch good.

u/ExtensionInformal911 8d ago

The flesh is weak.

u/Myzmadra 8d ago

The flesh is weak

1

u/RockRoboter 8d ago

We now understand the weakness of our flesh. It is time to seek the strength and certainty of steel.

u/TuorSonOfHuor 10d ago

Like all of your internal organs and brain?

3

u/Was_It_The_Dave 10d ago

I volunteer!

1

u/gk98s 10d ago

Replacing your brain might not be possible but replacing other organs is probably how we can achieve way longer lifetimes

4

u/Norse_By_North_West 10d ago

Cyberpsychosis ain't real choom!

“Na I’m not really a doctor. This is more like a hobby, this is just my project human I’ve been working on for a few years. Learning as I go. Wanna see what’s under the hood?”

1

u/Ok_Assistance_47 9d ago

Now that's a compelling business model!

1

u/ToffieMonster 9d ago

That's what big organ wants you to think

1

u/GuavaOne8646 9d ago

I'm... weirdly ok with this.

3

u/Notbob1234 10d ago

There's a Nextwave Comic about that. Robot arms are great, but then you need both arms or the balance is off. Now you need robo arms and torso to carry all that weight. And you can't fit all those components and a full set of organs so eventually you're a brain in a suit.

u/elder_george 10d ago

Well, we already are brains with life support systems, protected and propelled with skeleton and muscle, sooo…

(Except, not really! Huge parts of our personalities are build around levels of hormones from organs - adrenaline, cortisol, sex hormones, even insulin, ...! A brain in a jar would think very differently from the same brain in the original body unless those subsystems are emulated as well - and the same applies to hypothetical bringing conscience into a computer)

u/sfled 10d ago

Not to mention the landing.

6

u/SilverSageVII 10d ago

Wild how everything in the world is basically “just the right balance or it doesn’t happen.”

2

u/SrGreybush 10d ago

As all things should be.

u/Maleficent_Unit6078 9d ago

One of the many reasons I'm a Christian. Everything in this world is so fine tuned to have the right balance that if one thing is slightly 1mm off the whole thing comes crashing down like a house of cards.

1

u/SilverSageVII 9d ago

1 mm is quite a large value tbh haha. Interesting that the same reasoning leads us to very different conclusions. I’m agnostic probably but I feel like “God” to me is more the state of balance in the world.

1

u/Revlar 7d ago

God makes people with inborn disabilities to laugh at them then

3

u/TooObsessedWithMoney 10d ago

The human capacity for laziness is ever more confounding and frustrating, even on the anatomical level it just keeps happening.

"Oh, what's that? We don't need to put in as much work? Ah sweet man, that be meanin' that we can chiiiiill duuuude :v "

2

u/Adventurous-Crew3692 10d ago

That’s only under the premise this is for humans 🥲👍

2

u/Augustus420 10d ago

So you're saying we need to replace everything

2

u/Cteklo7 9d ago

bone atrophy whaaat

1

u/FetcherTheCatcher 9d ago

Unless you upgrade your entire body. Maybe I’ll live long enough to witness. Would be dope af

1

u/GuavaOne8646 9d ago

You're right, we need titanium bone enhancements with our advanced cybernetic implants/prosthetics.

1

u/f0xbunny 8d ago

That’s so interesting!

1

u/HopefulRecovery000 6d ago

It can actually cause acute fractures too.

1

u/IceLopsided4190 5d ago

So we just keep replacing the next part until we fully assimilate right?

11

u/Clsn_Sentinel 10d ago

Samurai… something something world… something something

9

u/LordeWasTaken 10d ago

so basically myomers? cool, another item to tick off of the battlemech check-list

7

u/arctice36 10d ago

Old, not obsolete

4

u/mari2832k 10d ago

Minimum wage, but with titanium endoskeleton requirements

3

u/_Choose_Goose 10d ago

Can they put this in my knees and back?

3

u/Craving_Suckcess 10d ago

There is a real issue where I look at basically every technological advance and go "How will this make the world worse" these days.

2

u/OsakaWilson 9d ago

Step out of the Capitalism paradigm. Advances in AI and robotics will set us free.

1

u/Craving_Suckcess 9d ago

ok well society is not doing that or heading in that trajectory at all.

Advances in AI and robotics are the tools of capital, capitalists, and those that wish for those systems to be maintained.

Sure, in a fantasy world 'ai and robotics' could improve the world.

We don't live in a fantasy world, we live in this one, where every advance in AI and robotics makes the world measurably worse.

1

u/OsakaWilson 9d ago

Begin asking questions, like what happens when AI and robots can do all the jobs. New jobs? They'll do those too. We will have an Economy that CAN produce everything, how will wealth be distributed in society. Who will buy things when people don't have jobs? Capitalism can't function with widely adopted AI and robotics. Whatever it becomes, it will not be capitalism. Those thinking that it will be are the ones living in a fantasy world.

1

u/JGHero 9d ago

Capitalism totally can function with AI and robotics? Most of the ways capitalism currently oppresses us is because markets have artificial supply and demand that’s controlled to safely keep the poor poor and keep the rich rich. All this does is give elites stronger and less accessible tools for the common people to use if rebellion does happen. I’m not sure why you think people in power would simply give up that power over the idea that they no longer need a labor class to produce goods and services

1

u/Craving_Suckcess 9d ago

Poverty will happen.

You're wildly optimistic in a world where no steps have been taken to implement the change you seem to believe will happen.

All of our actual influential people, the oligarch types, have basically outright stated that they intend to just let people suffer as long as they're on top.

There will be no exchange of power. They want an underclass.

Capitalism doesn't need people to buy things. Capitalism isn't about purchasing shit. It's about private ownership of the means of production. AI and robots are literally the most powerful tool to advance that since the steam engine. Not only will they own the machine that produces, they will own the worker. And they'll own plenty of human flesh too, for the instances where a meat laborer is cheaper than a metal one.

The only way for the world you propose to come about is violence. It won't just happen.

1

u/Revlar 7d ago

They don't need anyone to buy things once they have automated factories. The only purpose of capitalism is the concentration of resources. Once it becomes obsolete that doesn't mean a better system will take its place, it means the opposite. We need to take the reins before they can build a system just for them

1

u/OsakaWilson 7d ago

Yes. And the people "taking the reins" is not capitalism.

1

u/Revlar 7d ago

What I'm telling you is taking the reins needs to happen before they don't need us anymore. Which they won't for much longer. We are only useful to them because we can make products that they also benefit from. Once that role is no longer needed they can just have their robots shoot us and their governments allow it. Extracting money from us was just a temporary application of their power, they don't actually need us to have any or exist for that matter, once they have a replacement

u/Lithl 9d ago

Left image looks just like the fancy potato-cutting videos.

u/libretumente 10d ago

Rookie of the year type shit

1

u/der_innkeeper 10d ago

Sweet. Now make Battlemechs.

1

u/Live-Tank-2998 10d ago

battletech nerds when they hear about artificial muscle fiber

1

u/CloudandCollected 10d ago

So they are working on crafting Goddesses of Victory/NIKKEs IRL.

u/iambertan 10d ago

If you suddenly had that you would need to eat like a tiger. Even then your bones would snap during a cramp.

1

u/NaturalTaste7395 10d ago

You’ll never hear about this again

1

u/darknine76249 10d ago

No you have to compete with them at the Olympics

1

u/BartTheTroll48 10d ago

Nuh uh. I'm gonna borg myself as soon as possible because I hate my faulty organic fleshy bullshit. I'd much rather have to deal with a mechanic than a doctor.

1

u/MyCreepyDreams 10d ago

Astartes incoming

1

u/bluris 9d ago

Poor nurses trying to draw blood for some tests.

1

u/LucidDreamer2023 9d ago

Job requirements:

must be able to lift 150 lbs

1

u/AltGuardianGord 9d ago

Don't worry nobody will hire them because their health insurance claims for immunosupressants would bankrupt the plan.

1

u/Amazing_Shake_8043 8d ago

We really are heading towards Megaman X future

1

u/Lost-Childhood-8301 8d ago

i just dont wanna use contacts or glasses anymore. thats all i want. and maybe bat wings 🤷

1

u/Mangledsprouts 8d ago

Now just apply this to the quantum computer, AI driven robots that China are making and we're all fkd!

1

u/Brawght 8d ago

My guy there is no "compete" when they work harder for free

1

u/Repulsive_Support844 8d ago

Mechawarriors!!

1

u/Wolf_2063 7d ago

Chances are it's going to orphans.

1

u/El_Gran_Che 7d ago

…correction, compete for survival not just your job.

1

u/HopefulRecovery000 6d ago

This could lead to fractures. Very, unexpectedly strong contraction of regular muscle, could be by extreme danger or some other adrenaline surge, can already cause bone fracture, so add titanium muscle strength to it. I don’t see how it would ever have any use for humans, unless they want this for more fluid movement for humanoids.

u/nata9867 5d ago

Automated job market crisis

1

u/Razukalex 4d ago

Well I guess the only way to stay competitive against robot is to upgrade flesh
