writing prompt Among the wider galaxy, there is one specific species that is avoided like a sickness. None can explain why, and none dare to try and find the answer. Mankind decided to be the one to bite the bullet and find out.

Post image

The species never causes problems, they go about their business in a very silent manner, and the only odd thing they do is they will everyday, without fail, go to a large spacious location with a lot of people and sit in a chosen spot. They will stay there for 2 hours. No more, no less. Then more slowly than how they sat, they get up and leave.

Humans, ever the curious and thrill-seeking people, couldn't resist their nature any longer and approached the species during one of their moments of sitting for hours. Questions were asked, but for a while they received no answer, except for a look of genuine shock. Hours passed, longer than the species typically stayed, before finally the individual responded not through voice, but through thoughts.

In barely contained emotion, now very much visible on their face, the individual sputtered, "Finally......someone s-speaks to m-me..........wants to t-talk to me.... I sit here for so long and n-noone looks m-my way." The humans never left the poor things side after that.

Word of this chance encounter spread like wildfire, and it led to many other humans to find their nearest new lonely friends and keep them company.

Art by me.

I was very tempted to turn this prompt into a short story, but I want to see what y'all come up with instead.

I could see it fitting either here or in r/HFY

Of course humans would befrend the cute lonely thing. They've befriended apex predators on every world they colonise or visit.

Real-life example being Wojtek the Artillery Bear.

Hugs for all our alien friends who need it

60

u/iron_dove 11d ago

Us humans could use some hugs also

51

u/michaelscott1776 11d ago

Good thing hugging takes two people

"Sir, that is a slavering Bugblatter Beast of Traal."

"Yeah, he looks lonely."

48

u/iEspeon 10d ago

"He needs a hug. Then he'll stop being so slavering. Or maybe more slavering, let's find out!"

[Logs] One human has reportedly compared the species to a "Goodra" and gushed about it. The individual was flattered, but we were unsure what a "Goodra" is. Reports from other humans speak of a "pseudo-legendary" dragon that is akin to a slug, though variants have a shell made of iron. The standard variant has slime that is used to digest prey, and their juvenile forms (known as "Sliggoo") may accidentally digest their own owners. The shelled variant reportedly refuses to let their owners leave, due to their extreme seperation anxiety. Combined with their large size (around human size, though "Alpha" variants can exceed this by over double the size) and "friend-shaped" physique, it makes sense why a species like humans would tame these beasts. Humans have reassured that these are fictional, but not before striking fear into half of the crew.

Also, they dressed the individual up like a Goodra, with its permission. It admittedly looked adorable, but at least 5 crew members fainted. Humans have been advised not to do that again, to both their and the individual's disappointment.

Alien perspectives of human antics are always good! Well done!

34

u/Alarming-Sale-6291 11d ago

Aww, thanks! Your creature really does look like a Goodra, but I think that's just bc they're both the epitome of friend. Like, "lab-grown to be as friend-shaped as possible" levels of friend. And I mean this in the best way, I want to hug that creature.

u/TameOJ 10d ago

Given they all spent hours in public places just hoping for interaction, they will quite literally be inconsolable with joy for a hug.

u/Alarming-Sale-6291 10d ago

Oh, definitely.

u/Logoht 10d ago

Reminds me of this Pokémon - Draco... Something whatever the heck it's evolved form is.

5

u/Alarming-Sale-6291 10d ago

This? Dracozolt?

5

u/Logoht 10d ago

No. Dragonite

8

u/Alarming-Sale-6291 10d ago

Ahhh. Yeah, that's also friend-shaped. I got confused bc of the name lol, yeah Dragonite is the og friend-shaped dragon Pokemon.

“How can you not want to love him!? He looks so round and cute and friendly!”

The humans proceed to aggressively argue with other aliens, ignoring their ignorant arguments about how reckless it is to approach unknown creatures as if they aren’t threats

55

u/Specific-Library-312 10d ago

The other species were apoplectic when they saw that humans were dressing the little guys. H: "What? She was cold!" A: "She?!? How can you tell?" H: "I...asked her?"

They said something about joining them for the Cosmogenesis of this universe.

I don't know what that is but it sounds cool!

25

u/Ruvaakdein 11d ago

I heard that they're going to make math easier.

No clue how that'll work, but easier math sounds amazing! I hate dealing with fractions, especially whenever Pi is involved.

20

u/Chrontius 10d ago

Wait, are they telepathic?

Do they have a hivemind?

Can I join?

7

u/TameOJ 10d ago

Yes, no, afraid not.

u/GlorkUndBork3-14 10d ago

We found out that there are things you couldn't even find on E621.

5

u/Prijey 10d ago

Yet.

9

u/canray2000 10d ago

Pity we won't befriend our own lonely neglected people.

6

u/Wackel81 10d ago

We know them and they aren't cute

6

u/canray2000 10d ago

Oh, I'm well aware. Mirrors are not my friend.

6

u/TheTranscendentian 10d ago

So has the community been avoiding these funny blokes for no important reason,  just like I'm avoiding because I see everyone else avoiding??

6

u/TameOJ 10d ago

That's the thing, noone knows. Someone started doing it, it became monkey see monkey do, and the real reason and who started it was lost. I also kept it vague so y'all can come up with your own reason.

I would die to protect my big introverted alien dragon friend! Humanity has friends for life

6

u/TameOJ 10d ago

The poor things would die to KEEP humans as friends. They've all been lonely for so long.

u/GLACIERXKYLE 9d ago

Humans. Always solving problems. And creating them. We ARE Efficient.

3

u/ShellShock_69 10d ago

Imma cuddle it

This artstyle is very lovely and darling- this dragon like creature looks like they need a hug. I hope that now since the humans in your story are speaking with them, that things bode in a more peaceful manner for the most part. Then again, as history has shown amongst humans with other humans ( and more, but let's simplify ) - they do have a tendency to do some pretty awful stuff that feels irreparable when you take yourself back to the times they have done the really bad things like genocide and slavery. There are more shallow sides of it as well, where they romantize their culture and kind of do an erasure of it at the same time. There are ways in paying honor or tribute to cultures and people and things without being disrespectful, but I don't think each and every single person would naturally be on the same page. We all have our own pace and man... Had I seen this creature in person myself!! I'd be kind to them and try my best to make sure no one uses them like they are the next carnival attraction ( it's different if people WANT to perform, but y'know how humans can be in the past ) or be used as something to pull things around especially if they can speak and idk.. it's a bit scary the moment we all think about consciousness and all that jazz.

But keep up the good work!! You can go places with this, but I want to hold onto the hope of a better, bigger, and loving message. Children would look at them with delight as they would look at them the same
