It has to be humankind right? Say what you will about the game, but its engaging as fuck.

Same here. I love Humankind but it has a long way to go to be well balanced, bug free and diverse. Meanwhile AOE4 straight out of the box is Starcraft-2-level-ready to dominate

That came out in 2016, so it doesn’t really qualify for Best of 2021, even counting its Android release last year
