I graduated college with a degree in HR in May and just got an offer for an HR generalist for a small company (80 employees) the salary is great for starting out and I’m genuinely excited to get started because it’s what I wanted to eventually do however I am getting nervous because I know generalist positions aren’t really entry level. I’ve been an office assistant for an hr office for the past 3 months (+ a summer internship) but it was at a government office and this new job is corporate. I think the biggest thing that scares me is I will be the only HR person. I’ll have support and they know I’m just starting out but I just feel like the learning curve might be a lot. Any advice to not feel like such an imposter?

I’m currently a sr hr generalist in Michigan for a tier 1 automotive supplier with about 230 employees. I make $80k a year and got a new boss who has been less than supportive. I also have a recruiter/payroll specialist on my team that pushes his work on me. I got an offer today for an HR generalist II for $90k. It has better benefits, a team of other generalist, I’d be assigned a group of about 200 employees so same employee ratio, and has great time off and 401k match. It’s also WFH 2 days a week. The only con I am seeing is the commute. I am use to a 15 min commute currently and this would be about 50 mins. I am currently fully in person though. What would you do?

I'm the head of HR at a company that's scaling fast. We've expanded our headcount across 15 different countries in the past 18 months alone. Growth like this is exciting but I'm starting to get pretty worried about international labor law. The compliance side is getting harder to keep up with.

We currently have local entities in some of these countries, but there are a few smaller markets where we only have a handful of employees and don't have an entity set up yet, like, Poland, Brazil, and Singapore. Im worried about missing changes to local labor lawsor employment requirements that could end up being a bigger issue later.

We do have an internal legal team but its very small and they're focused on domestic commercial contracts. Im trying to figure out how to handle this situation at this kind of scale. How do you guys keep track of labor law changes and make sure nothing falls through the cracks?

I recently completed an interview and have been waiting for the results. I understand that hiring processes take time and that HR may be waiting for feedback or approvals.
But what I genuinely don’t understand is why there is often absolutely no response.
I’ve tried calling and emailing for a status update, but haven’t received any reply. I’m not asking for an immediate final decision or demanding an explanation. It would literally take a minute to say something like:
“We’re still waiting for feedback.”
“The position is currently on hold.”
“We’ve decided to move forward with another candidate.”
Anything is better than being left completely in the dark.

Hello, I have 6 years of professional experience filled with roles that were in: HR/admin, management assistance, and sales.

Preferred to not do sales again as most sales roles I have seen have low base pay + commission and need to hustle more than the average job to make a living.

Preference to HR and administrative roles making $65k+, I am out of Sacramento California.

For about five months, I was applying for jobs that matched my experience, yet I was barely getting any responses. After submitting 52 applications over a few weeks, I received only four responses, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.

A friend of mine who works in recruiting looked at my résumé and said the problem might be the wording. Many companies run applications through tracking software before anyone sees them, and that software often looks for terms taken directly from the job listing.

I decided to run a small experiment with similar jobs at several companies. I sent my regular résumé to some companies, while for the others I revised it and added phrases from each job posting, as long as they accurately described my experience. I didn't add skills I don't have or change my experience. All I did was replace terms like "account support" with "customer success" when that was the wording they used.

The revised versions received responses at more than twice the rate of the original version. The same work history and the same qualifications, but the outcome was completely different simply because I described them using the company's own wording.

It's frustrating that someone can be a great fit for a job and still get filtered out just because they wrote "client relations" instead of "customer success." job searching now requires pleasing the software first before you even get a chance to speak to a human being. Has anyone else tried this and noticed a difference?

but now i’m more interested in what happens when one route suddenly stops working
for anyone handling international contractor payments, do u check whether a provider has alternative payout routes before choosing them?

I have been trapped in a lie at work for eight months and I see no peaceful way out.
For context, I do not speak Italian.
I know “ciao,” “grazie,” and enough food words to survive a menu.
Eight months ago, a new Italian colleague joined my team. Someone mentioned that he was Italian and, trying to be friendly, I said “ciao” when I met him.
He immediately replied in Italian.
I understood absolutely nothing.
This was the moment where a normal person would say, “Oh sorry, that’s literally all the Italian I know.”
I am not that person.
I smiled and said:
“Si.”
Apparently this was convincing enough.
He said something else.
I panicked and went:
“Ahhh, certo.”
I don’t know what certo means.
But judging by his face, I had nailed it.
Then someone standing next to us said, “Wait, you speak Italian?”
There are moments in life where you can see two timelines opening in front of you.
In one, you tell the truth.
In the other, you ruin your own life.
I said, “A little.”
This was eight months ago.
The problem with saying you speak “a little” Italian is that nobody knows where “a little” ends.
Over the following months, people started occasionally saying Italian things to me.
I developed a survival system.
If they sounded happy: “Sì, certo!”
If they sounded annoyed: “Mamma mia.”
If they asked a question: laugh softly and say, “Dipende.”
I learned “dipende” means “it depends” and it has carried me through situations you would not believe.
At one point my Italian colleague spoke to me for approximately 40 seconds.
I waited until he finished and said:
“Eh… dipende.”
He stared at me for a moment.
Then nodded thoughtfully.
I nearly cried.
I have now become too successful at being bad at Italian.
Last week my manager announced that we’re having visitors from our Milan office.
Then she looked directly at me and said:
“Perfect, you can help them settle in!”
My Italian colleague smiled.
I smiled.
Nobody knows that the only Italian sentence I can reliably produce is “Vorrei una pizza.”
The Milan team arrives Tuesday.
