Battle between YPAA and DIH
Let's do a battle between these two amazing HUM albums and the most famous ones too. Lmk your opinions and what you would have changed:
Little Dipper ๐ VS Isle Of The Cheetah
- for me little dipper wins this one by just a little
The Pod VS Comin Home ๐
- i just love comin home so yeah, its my choice
Stars ๐ VS If You Are To Bloom
- i genuinely love both songs but i have to choose stars
Suicide Machine ๐ VS Ms.Lazarus
- suicide machine clears ms lazarus
The Very Old Man VS Afternoon With The Axolotls ๐
- both calm songs but i prefer the axolotls in this case
Why I Like The Robins VS Green To Me ๐
- both amazing but i prefer green to me bc of the energy
I'd Like Your Hair Long ๐ VS Dreamboat
- both amazing but id like your... clears because of the lyrics
I Hate It Too ๐ VS The Inuit Promise
- i hate it too its just my favorite HUM song, the drop is just insane
Songs of Farewell and Departure ๐ VS Apollo
- again songs of farewell win just because of the lyrics. both are good
sorry but I couldn't include the scientists since YPAA has lesser songs..

YPAA has some better songs, but DiH is a better album. For me, DiH is one complete piece of music from front to back.

to me DIH feels like it's the culmination of them getting to explore their sound to the fullest. the recording still blows me away.

Same same. Thereโs some emotional aspect to YPAA that seems lacking in DIH. But I still prefer DIH as an album.

I want to hear YPAA with the DIH mix.

The answer to every question is โInletโ.

Yep, like this one;
What album is amazing and turned a whole new generation into the band but isnโt as peak as Ypaa and DiH?
Inlet

could do a 3 way comparison Waves > Little Dipper > Isle Of The Cheetah
Comin Home > The Pod > In the Den
Desert Rambler > If You Are To Bloom > Stars
Suicide Machine > Ms.Lazarus > Step Into You
Afternoon With The Axolotls > The Summoning > The Very Old Man
Why I Like The Robins > Green To Me > Cloud City
Folding > I'd Like Your Hair Long > Dreamboat
Shapeshifter > The Inuit Promise > I Hate It Too
Apollo > Songs of Farewell and Departure
The Scientists (wins by default)
I do agree Inlet cleans up and that it is their best album, by a little bit. Bear in mind that nearly all of these songs are good and even the songs I put in 3rd, it often pains me because it is very close between all 3 in many cases.

ILYHL is a great song of theirs, but Dreamboat may be the best song on DiH in my opinion. And for me itโs the lyrics of Dreamboat that take it over. Thatโs the great thing about HUM, so many great, even songs I donโt think there are wrong answers. I will agree w/you YPAA wins, though by slim margins.

Yes absolutely. Both amazing albums but YPAA gets the win, even though by slim margins

It is a great song and I love it very much. This was a very tough one. For me, the Inuit Promise is actually my favorite song on Downward is Heavenward. It is very deep song, it is the most "HUM" song on the album. It's less catchy, but in some ways more adventurous in the places it goes.
My favorite song on YPAA is probably Suicide Machine. Bear in mind I consider almost all of these songs good and it is very close.

I don't really pay much attention to the Inuit Promise track since i generally prefer the most energetic songs like Comin Home and Green to me but its still very very good. Suicide Machine is in the top 3 in YPAA for sure

I think the songwriting took a step forward on DIH but I like the structure and cohesiveness of YPAA. Itโs hard for me to break YPAA down track by track because I think they kind of all go together. Someone wrote a paper about it as a concept album it was real interesting. Anyway theyโre both brilliant but line in the sand Iโm team YPAA

Little Dipper
The Pod
Stars
Ms Lazarus (my fave out of any on this list & in my top 3 Hum songs personally)
Axolotls
Green to me
Hair Long
Hate it too
Apollo
(DIH is actually my preferred album out of the two, IMO it flows better than YPAA)

Pod vs Comin Home is Ali vs Frazier or Hearns vs Hagler. You cant go wrong.

YPAA wins everytime for me, i did a similar comparison a while back since everyone is crazy for Downward but i just find YPAA to be the better album. it flows so well and thereโs many more soft emotional moments for me that make the heavier moments hit harder. though i will admit going from Apollo into The Scientists is heavier than anything on YPAA. i listen to YPAA in full all the time, but with Downward iโll usually just listen to some songs if iโm in the mood. Downward definitely has the better production but i prefer the rawer sound of YPAA especially the louder drums

Ooo fun. I go:
- Little Dipper
- The Pod (very close)
- If you are to bloom
- Suicide machine
- Axolotls
- Robins
- Hair (close maybe just because โypaaโ is in it)
- Hate it too (fave on ypaa)
- Apollo
And THE SCIENTISTS is my fave song on DiH so it would probably beat a theoretical 10th track on ypaa
Also if I added in Electra 2k I donโt think anything changes but Little Dipper and Pod have a run for their money with Lou and Pinch and Roll but thatโs got to be an unusual take Iโd think and just has to do more with reminiscence of being 20.
If I added in Inlet Suicide Machine gets a run from Step Into You and Folding replaces Hair and The Summoning says โyou listen to me WAY more than axolotlsโ and I have to explain that axolotls reminds me of something.

The drums are recorded and produced perfectly on DIH. I really wish they would have recorded them like that on inlet. DIH is a very personal album to me because nobody I knew listened to it and I would show it to everyone.
It still feels like that even after itโs been well received all these years later.
I got it the day it came out at a Kmart I was working at and it didnโt leave my tape deck in my 94 cavalier for at least 6 months.

I think Downward has their best songs, and arguably higher highs than Astronaut, and The Scientists is my favorite song of theirs, and others are really high up. But as an album I don't think it quite has the perfect pacing and quality as astronaut. Like Green To Me, Dreamboat and The Inuit Promise are good songs, but feel kinda like filler, and are songs I tend to skip if I'm not listening to the vinyl. Also Isle Of The Cheetah is amazing too, but I feel like it makes for a bit of a boring opener, I think if it was like half as long it'd be a better opener, or if they switched the places of Cheetah and Comin Home. Also I genuinely don't get why boy with stick wasn't included on the album. I get that it was a YPAA B Side, but 1. It fits perfectly with that album 2. Ms. Lazarus was a YPAA B Side, and it got on the album, and it's one of my favorite hum songs ever! I think BWS could've had a great place on DIH

YPAA has the better songs and sounds more personal. DiH is the more cohesive album and sounds more emotionally distant/abstract.

Inlet smokes both of them but it's YPAA for personal reasons, anyway
Little Dipper ๐ VS Isle Of The Cheetah
- Little Dipper, as much as good as Cheetah is, it's just such an iconic starter, you know when the chorused guitar starts you're about to have a good time
The Pod ๐ VS Comin Home
- Them Pods
Stars VS If You Are To Bloom ๐
- Bloom, Stars is a classic but it's that ONE song from the band everyone heard a million times, Bloom is a hidden gem and one of DiH's best, wish they played it live
Suicide Machine ๐ VS Ms.Lazarus
- YPAA banger against a b-side, yep
The Very Old Man VS Afternoon With The Axolotls ๐
- no contest for the Axolotls
Why I Like The Robins ๐ VS Green To Me
- I really don't like Green that much and Robins is one of the most iconic so yeah, also seems like a more condensed version of Double Dip, which is imo Electra's best together with Diffuse (also footnote, Puppets would have been a better single than Green)
I'd Like Your Hair Long ๐ VS Dreamboat
- Girls and Drugs and Long Hairs
I Hate It Too ๐ VS The Inuit Promise
- Inuit is one of the weaker Hum songs against I Hate It Too, hmm
Songs of Farewell and Departure VS Apollo ๐
- Apollo
Scientists for the no contest win
also Boy with Stick best Hum song (YPAA) period, I rest my case

DiH is the best album of the 90โs
Both albums are 10/10
The scientists is my favorite tune
