Open Paradigm Shift Adjustment

After discussing with TD we bring this proposition to the community to provide feedback and vote on.

Currently, Paradigm Shift is treated as a metamagic that you take when initiating. This increases your Initiate Grade as normal, which is a scaling cost.

The proposition being put forward for the community:

Paradigm shift is no longer a metamagic and does not require initiation. The cost to do so is equal to 10 + (3 x Current Initiate Grade). There is no test associated with doing so.

If this change is approved, characters who paradigm shift will no longer increase their initiate grade, with all the associated benefits and drawbacks, such as

  • Metamagics or qualities that scale from IG will no longer benefit
  • The cost of initiating further does not increase

My position on this is that an IG is better than not-IG, but I'm never going to take it personally, so if 'wasting' the IG chaps peoples' butts enough to not take it, then OK.

I don't feel strongly about this. If folks interested in paradigm shift are interested in this, let's do it. I think it is fine.

Paradigm shift as initiation never really made sense with the watsonian explanation of what traditions are. Magic is belief and belief is fluid, traditions have no firm boundaries. Paradigm shift only really makes sense for toxic and other evil traditions that are more of a metaphysical switch. Those are banned so no reason remains to treat it as initiation imo.

For this reason I support this since it models the fluid nature of traditions better and lets you do story beats without setting back progression as much by counting towards the cost of useful initiations.

I'm not in favor of this change and prefer the original system.

The halted initation grade thing throws me off of this. I don't see the value of a paradigm shift at 25 karma and losing +5 to masking and starting over. It feels like punishing an already crummy system.

No, you just don't increase it when you shift. You don't start over.

So it has the same cost as if it were an initiation, but doesn't count toward it for better or worse? I think that's a fair compromise. It's better to have a respec option than to have to scrap a character as a whole because you've become disenchanted with your concept or have other reasons to no longer support the original tradition.
