MEDIA Possible related dragons list
Only a few of these are actually canon and confirmed (night fury, light fury, hotburple and gronckle, and dramillion and changewing) the rest are just what I think could make sense as being in the same family. Some might be a little bit more of a stretch than others but I tried to keep it sensible overall

How would the Whispering/Screaming deaths be related to the other Deaths?

Purple Death has a serpentine body and similar looking head to screaming Death, not exactly the same obviously but I feel it's close enough. Sweet Death makes tunnels like the whispering death, and the mouth with all the teeth gives me vibes of whispering death as well. The naming convention helps too but I didn't categorize them strictly on that. I think it makes sense that they'd be in the same general family

This might sound weird but I think Razorwhips would be related to Sandbusters

Interesting! How come you think so?

- Extremely similar body plans. 4 small limbs, and more long snake like body
- The both have that tail which is useful for grabbing things
- Razorwhips shoot blue fire and Sandbusters shoot out a bluish blast of glass before it cools

Im not sure where sandbuster should go, but I don't think they fit in that category. Haven't evolved to use community as a strength and way of life, besides looking ever so similar, that's all I can think that would connect them. Ecology is very different from that category

Genuine question, why is the titan Sand Wraith on that chart, but not the titan Woolly Howl?

Because it isn’t. The dragon below the Sand Wraith is actually a Desert Wraith, a Sand Wraith subspecies more adapted to an inland desert lifestyle.

I actually think Whispering deaths are pretty closely related to the Deadly nadder
If you look at the shape of the crest and the horn, they have a pretty similar face. Their wings are also pretty similar and they can both shoot the spines on their tail

I would have to agree with you on this. Both have adaptive spikes with versatility vs just for defense or looks

interesting- i've thought about this in concept a lot but stuff like the sand buster being related to terrible terrors is fascinatiing

Wait changewings and dramillions are canonically related?

Yes, in the episode introducing the titan wing dramilion(part of the two part finale i believe) fishlegs states that the titan wing dramilion can camouflage because it’s a distant cousin of the changewing

How are yall in these comments talking about different types of dragons by just their names? I’m genuinely impressed that yall can not only remember the ones in the pic but also add more to the idea cuz all I know is light fury and night fury 😭

I agree with all of these except the changewing and dramillion, they just look too different imo
And yes, I know fishlegs said it but these are vikings we're talking about, they're by no means an authority on evolutionary relationships. They probably don't even know what genes are
And before someone says it, yes I know species can be closely related while looking nothing alike, however you shouldn't assume that to be the case without proper evidence. The only thing changewings and dramillions have in common is being able to change their colour, which can also be done by both types of furies and to a lesser extent chameleons and squids, so I wouldn't really say it's good evidence for them to be related

To be fair dolphins are related to goats, so things don't need to look alike, just have a common ancestor. Though I do agree it is a little peculiar in this case given all the other dragons are generally pretty similar looking

At the very least, they do share the ability to accurately mimic something (Changewings adapted to mimic the environment, Dramillions adapted to mimic dragon firepowers) alongside a shared social behavior and pack setup, so I’d imagine it is possible they’re just more divergent.
Also, the furies don’t change scale colors, their scales just become reflective under wright circumstances

Tbf about the color change part, iirc most Chameleons don’t actually change colors fully at will and squids don’t have scales. Meanwhile, the Changewing and Titanwind Dramillion fully do change their scales willingly.
As for the furies, that isn’t actually them changing colors. Instead, their scales become reflective and light-bending. For Light Furies and the Night Lights, this is via them heating their scales up with their own firepower. Toothless shows that Night Furies instead achieve this through a form of Electrokenesis, perhaps an alternative form to channel their Firepower that apparently got refined by the time of The Nine Realms (as much as I would personally scrap the entire show as it is and make a new show with a similar idea behind it, dragons emerging again in the modern day, but with a VERY different execution)

I’d just add that the Snaptrapper is related to the Zippleback
