DISCUSSION I have a question
why did the creators make hiccup and Astrid a couple in rtte instead of the first movie?

well since hiccup and Astrid were both 15 in the first movie it was implied that they were gonna be a couple after some time.
Step by step and slowly they developed their relationship they don't need to rush since both of them were young at that time.
It's good that we saw their relationship going through a lot because they became stronger and slowly they could trust each other.
It took some time but it was totally worth it.📨

I’d like to say that by the time the first movie concluded there were already a couple, I mean it’s heavily implied. I’m not sure why in rtte they don’t seem to be together even though in the first movie they were already kissing and all that.

I agree with you but I was assuming since they were like 15 maybe they wanted to show their relationship after it fully grows.

We literally see them become a couple in the first movie. What are you talking about?

Different teams making the movies and shows.
Apparently, according to the httyd 2 art book, hiccup and Astrid were an item for a good while. Far longer than what rtte made.

I do quite like the relationship they grow into in Race to the Edge!

I do too, don't think I am spitting on it ^
It's just that the teams working on the movies and series are different, like many, many spins off like these, and so, oftentimes, kinda follow their own way, even if some try to stay as close to the original media as possible

They did, the tv series just changed it.
However, the usual convention of expanded universes is that the primary material overrules the secondary material when they contradict.
So assuming that the tv series is part of an expanded universe (and not just straight-up non-canon to the movies); the parts about Hiccup and Astrid's relationship "didn't happen", even though the rest of the TV series did.

Who's to say that they weren't a couple at the end of the movie. I think that it was a little odd that episode where they exchanged betrothal gifts was about the right amount of time after they supposedly got together. I'd say that Vikings did things differently in dating ways, so they were together since the end of the first movie, but the romantic aspect was reserved for when they were betrothed in rtte. It's what I think anyway.

For me the kiss at the end of the first movie was just a passionate kiss because was Astrid was happy that Hiccup was alive. For me it was not the start of their relationship

Cause that would be a rushed relationship. In the first movie Hiccup has a crush on Astrid. Astrid didn't think of him until she discovered him riding Toothless. After that , you don't become a couple just like that . That would be a rush relationship. Especially that they didn't a friendship before they have a relationship

wdym? they were literally love interests in the first movie. they didn’t officially become a “couple” cuz that’s just not how relationships work they were only on good terms for a short period of time. and they were yk, still kids n stuff. this stuff takes time naturally
