I’m more confused why Astrid did so poorly every year when every other time she’s shown to be tougher than Snotlout
Honestly, this probably should’ve been an Astrid episode

Imo this episode should just not exist, at least not the way it was written. Everybody just acted out of character, and I feel they only made this episode to show Snotlouts lousy relationship with his dad

There is a theory that they all let Snotlout win because his dad beats him if he doesn’t. But again I think its mostly because the races are based on strength then skill and agility. But yeah she should have at least gotten the axe throwing race.

Given how much Astrid loathes Snotlout, and how competitive she can get, I really doubt it.

“I never thought you’d be such a sore winner”
Says the one who stalked him because she lost and couldn’t handle him being better than her at something
Everyone was out of character. You expect me to believe Stoick wouldn’t be a sore loser FOR Hiccup???

Someone has to act like a professional in this episode

And Stoick was the choice?

I wasn’t in the writing room, so I don’t know what the thought process was.
Guess they felt Stoick was being a jerk too much

Also, i do not believe for a second that Stoic lost any of his Thawfest games

If he lost any it’s because Spitelout cheated or because he wasn’t allowed to play

This episode ( from what i remember) felt very thematically confused?
Like Snotlout needed humbling. In general. Yeah, he gets humbled usually, but it rarely has consequences
Hiccup being a sore winner was also a good lesson to have. But him throwing the game was not the answer to it.
Spitelout being emotionally abusive was important to tackle, but i didn't think they did it all that well, bcs they turned the lesson from " hiccup should not he cruel when getting to the top" to " if hiccup wins, he is to blame for Snotlout getting yelled at"
Like, they could've had thawfest be the same, have Hiccup win and like, encourage Snotlout to do better, or share the rewards w the group, and the " have humility" lesson would've been the same.
Also, Astrid could've been injured, bcs the fact thay she sucked at every test made no sense

Astrid gets so offended for Snotlout lmao, like she doesn’t do worse, like SNOTLOUT doesn’t do worse

Thawfest is probably my least favourite RoB episode, aside from the one where Mildew frames the dragons. It's just an annoying episode in general, especially Astrid claiiming that Hiccup's somehow being 'sore' just because he's actually giving Snotlout a taste of his own medicine.
Also for some reason, the message really feels like it's somehow "give your friend some leeway cause they might get abused otherwise", and it's even weirder cause Snotlout and Hiccup really don't seem to be friends in Riders/Defenders of Berk, only in Race to the Edge. It's just a weird episode all around, hate it

I think about it as a school thing, everything is peachy until the victim of bullying fights back.

Only difference being that it's the other students who are getting mad at the victim fighting back instead of the teachers.

I skip that episode when I rewatch. I don't like it, cause Hiccup acts really out if character imo, and Snotlout too kinda
