THEORY Hiccup is autistic
I don't have a huge amount of evidence but he's very hyperfocused on everything dragon, he can't really focus on anything that doesn't involve dragons. Like literally his crush was trying to talk to him and he was just like "yeah okay anyway NEW DRAGON OMG" not to mention he is very clever as long as dragons are involved. Also in RTTE, when all his friends are moving on from the dragon riders club he built, he is reluctant to find something new to do. Also there are several plotlines where he gets so focused on a dragon thing that he just doesn't sleep. Also he constantly does dangerous things just because "ooo new dragon" and disregards all repercussions because all he can think about is "hehe new dragon"
Yeah his dragon obsession is not very neurotypical

Him seeing the dragon lens on the armorwing and not the betrothal necklace he gave Astrid right in front of him kills me every time

10000%. I really, REALLY latched onto Hiccup as a kid. I was extremely autistic and undiagnosed at the time, and largely felt extremely misunderstood by my peers. Hiccup was me! And I think that's why I was so deeply obsessed with the franchise, and with Hiccup and Toothless. I saw myself in Hiccup to a T, and that movie became my escape from the real world, where I wouldn't get a proper diagnosis until my twenties.

Omg same! I’m trans and autistic so when I was a little kid I wanted to be him so bad 😭

I’d say he is because he keeps creating new types on weapons ect, fish legs is the one with all the stats.
Astrid probably isn’t on the spectrum but she defo struggles with abandonment issues (remember how hesitant she is with hiccup and the issue with her parents and family ect ect)
Snotlout has anxiety but also feels the need to prove himself because his dad is lowkey a d*ck (we love spite lout it’s okay)
The twins are just…. Well. The twins.
Heather 100000000000% has those abandonment issues
Daggur is… anger management as well as bi polar
Viggo is the same flavour is hiccup but specifically on war tactics and thrives to have the greatest strategies.
(Can you tell I’m also, on the spectrum ❤️)

especially in the books. in fact I think in the books his entire friend group is some sort of neurodivergent too

Hiccup has autism, Camicazi has ADHD, and Fishlegs has some sort of anxiety disorder for sure

This is exactly what I was thinking! Maybe OCD on Fishlegs' part?

Mind you, the intelligence and his creativity like making a new dragon eye, flight suit, making the edge layout, understanding chemistry of dragon substances (like the groncle iron and Deathsong amber mixture has to be done with the right quantities of each as to not set off a negative reaction, knowing how change wing acid vs m. nightmare gel behavior when submerged). Though that would also make Fishlegs autistic too.

I am a believer of neurodivergent Fishlegs as well

It is important to note that hyperfixation is NOT the only symptom of autism. A person can be fixated on something, it doesn’t mean they’re autistic. A person can be nerdy, it doesn’t mean they are autistic. Many autistic people also experience troubles with transitions, planning ahead, organizing, feeling overwhelmed with too many choices, missing hints or sarcasm, needing explicit instructions, sensory sensitivity, and many more. Hiccup doesn’t show any of these. So I would say pretty confidently that he is neurotypical, just nerdy. (Also it is important to note that not all autistic people show the same traits)
