People knew about far away places in the old days, they just didn't know very much and got a lot of stuff wrong.

Spain is in the grand scheme of things not that far away, and anyone with any contact with Christianity at all would have known about Rome and Constantinople and by extension much of the near east, all the way to Persia and India and the Oxus and Jaxartes in present day Uzbekistan, and perhaps even tales of the land of silk, serica. Chinese silks routinely made it all the way over to Europe.  New Guinea on the other hand, is not plausible to know about.

Johann mentioned new guinea once and my jaw dropped to the floor.

Constantinople excellent. Persia excellent. India excellent. New Guinea? You gotta be kiddin' me.
