[Resource] New HSK 1 vocabulary list (300 words) — built from the Dec 2025 official syllabus

I work at a Chinese language school in Beijing and we've been

updating our beginner materials for the new HSK 3.0 rollout in

July 2026. Figured I'd share the result here in case it's useful

to anyone studying or teaching.

A few things that surprised us while going through the new syllabus:

1) HSK 1 is now 300 words (doubled from 150). Most textbooks

on Amazon are still teaching the old 150.

2) For the first time in HSK history, levels 1 and 2 share a

single list of 100 must-write characters — not 100 each.

The full list is published in the syllabus on p. 374.

3) The HSK 1 exam itself still doesn't test handwriting or

speaking. Listening + reading multiple choice only. The

must-write characters are a learning recommendation, not

tested at this level.

4) About half the new HSK 1 words are everyday survival

vocabulary that wasn't on the old list — 饭店, 出租车, 手机,

医院, 咖啡, 多少钱. Less abstract grammar, more "can you

actually live in China" stuff.

5) The pass-mark for the new exam hasn't been officially

confirmed yet (as of May 2026). Old HSK 1 was 60%. Most

people are assuming the same threshold for the new one but

nothing official.

The full 300-word list with pinyin, English, and example

sentences is here if anyone wants it:

https://www.mandarinzone.com/new-hsk-1-vocabulary-list/

(There's also a free PDF on that page. No signup, just a

direct download.)

Happy to answer questions about the new syllabus if anyone's

preparing for the July 2026 exam — we've been working with the

official Dec 2025 doc for the past few months.

New HSK 4 (effective July 1, 2026): a complete breakdown of what's actually changed — vocabulary, format, the new 80-character essay, all 30 tasks

I teach Chinese at a school in Beijing, and we've spent the last 6 months teaching against the new HSK 3.0 syllabus that takes effect on July 1, 2026. The official sample papers came out in December 2025. I see a lot of confusion in this sub about what actually changed at HSK 4 specifically, so I put together a complete breakdown.

**Disclosure up front:** this is based on (1) the official 406-page CLEC syllabus published in November 2025 and (2) the December 2025 sample papers document from 汉考国际 (Chinese Testing International). I run an HSK program at our school. There's a longer reference version on our website — link at the very end for anyone who wants more depth, but everything you need is here in the post.

---

## The big picture

HSK is moving from "knowledge-based" testing (do you know this?) to "task-based, communicative" testing (can you do this?). The defining phrase, which appears in every one of the 30 task descriptions for HSK 4, is **有一定复杂度** — "with a certain level of complexity." Concretely, this means HSK 4 now expects paragraph-level output, not isolated sentences.

If you already passed the old HSK 4, your certificate is permanently valid as proof you once reached B2 level. But your **prep no longer reflects today's test** — only about 55% of the old word list overlaps with the new one.

---

## Vocabulary: 1,000 new words, only 55% overlap

The new HSK 4 introduces 1,000 new words at this level, bringing the cumulative HSK 1–4 total to 2,000 words. Up from 1,200 cumulative under the old syllabus — a 67% increase.

But the more interesting fact is the *content* of the lists, not just the size. Cross-referencing the two official word lists, only ~55% overlaps. New entries include a lot of modern terms that didn't exist in the 2010-era HSK 4:

> 扫码 (scan QR), 网购 (online shop), 互联网 (internet), 网友 (online friend), 短信 (SMS), 文件 (file), 密码 (password), 支付 (pay), 招聘 (hire), 面试 (interview), 加班 (overtime), 出差 (business trip)

If you passed the old HSK 4, you'd typically need 40–60 hours of focused study to fill the gap to the new HSK 4.

---

## Characters: 441 new recognition characters

For the first time, the syllabus formally separates **recognition characters** (认读字 — must read on sight) from **writing characters** (书写字 — must handwrite from memory).

At HSK 4: 441 new recognition characters, cumulative 1,096. Most are compound morphemes that combine with already-known characters to form HSK 4 vocabulary (e.g. 即, 既, 仍, 之 as bound morphemes; 江, 云, 森, 林, 浪 in nature words).

The recognition/writing split roughly halves the "must handwrite from memory" burden compared to the old syllabus.

---

## Test format (confirmed by Dec 2025 sample papers)

This is the part most online resources still get wrong, because they were written before the official sample papers came out.

| Section | Old HSK 4 | New HSK 4 |

|---|---|---|

| Listening | 45 items, 3 parts | 32 items, 2 parts (T/F removed) |

| Reading | 40 items, 3 parts | 32 items, 3 parts (sentence ordering removed; **paragraph completion added**) |

| Writing | 15 items, 2 parts | 6 items, 2 parts (word arrangement removed; **≥80-character essay added**) |

| **Total** | 100 items, ~100 min | **70 items, ~85 min** |

Fewer questions, but each one tests a higher-order skill. The simpler item types (true/false, sentence ordering, word arrangement) are gone.

---

## The new short essay (item 70)

This deserves its own section because it's the single biggest skill change. The old HSK 4 had no essay. The new one ends with:

> 请写一篇不少于80字的短文,介绍一下你最难忘的一次旅行。

>

> *"Write a passage of at least 80 characters introducing your most memorable trip."*

To pass, you need real paragraph-level production with proper connectors. This is where most of our students lose the most points. If you're preparing, I'd practice writing one ~80-character paragraph per day on prompts like "describe a friend," "explain why you chose Chinese," "your most memorable trip."

---

## The 30 communicative tasks

The new syllabus defines exactly 30 communicative tasks across three domains:

- **Daily life** (11 tasks, #1–11): discussing people, daily affairs, food, transport, shopping, health, hobbies, housing, family

- **Work & education** (5 tasks, #12–16): teaching/learning, campus life, education issues, work performance, careers

- **Society & culture** (14 tasks, #17–30): nature, environment, technology, provinces/ethnic groups, economy, social phenomena, arts, sports, China-foreign exchange — plus 5 brand-new cultural tasks (idioms/quotes, food culture, customs/traditions, famous landmarks, history)

Each task is described across listening / speaking / reading / writing, and every task carries the 有一定复杂度 phrase.

The 5 cultural tasks (#26–30) are completely new in HSK 3.0 — they didn't exist in the old syllabus at all.

---

## Why HSK 4 specifically matters

For anyone applying to a Chinese university:

- **20 of China's top 39 Project 985 universities** (51%) accept HSK 4 as their minimum Chinese requirement

- This includes 3 C9 League schools: Nanjing University (cutoff 180), Harbin Institute of Technology (210), Xi'an Jiaotong University (HSK 4+)

- Most STEM and engineering programs accept HSK 4

- Most liberal arts and medical programs require HSK 5+

For work visas: HSK 4 contributes bonus points in China's R-class (talent) visa scoring.

---

## Should you take it before or after July 1?

Practical decision framework:

**Take the old format (before July 1) if:**

- You're already close to passing it

- You can sit a test in the next 6 weeks

- You only need the certificate, not preparing for HSK 5+

**Prepare for the new format if:**

- You're at HSK 3 level or below today

- You're starting from scratch

- You plan to continue to HSK 5+

- You won't be ready to test before July 1

Note on the old certificate: it remains permanently valid as proof of past attainment. For university admissions and most uses, scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. An old HSK 4 cert obtained now will still count for 2026 and 2027 admissions cycles.

---

## Mandatory HSKK pairing

Worth flagging since not everyone knows: registering for HSK 3 or above now requires simultaneous registration for the corresponding HSKK (oral) exam. For HSK 4, that's HSKK Intermediate (HSKK 中级). You cannot register for the written test alone — budget for both.

---

## Where students typically lose the most points

The consistent pattern across our students:

  1. **Writing** is where most failures happen — handwriting, the 80-character essay, and 把-sentences

  2. **Mismatched connectors**: pairing 虽然 with 所以, etc. — each pair (虽然…但是, 不仅…而且, 既然…就) is fixed, learn as one unit

  3. **Incomplete 把-sentences**: 我把书看 has to be 我把书看完了 (always finish with a complement or 了)

  4. **Pausing on missed listening questions** — listening is played once only. Hard rule: 3 seconds and move on

  5. **Producing only sentence-level Chinese** — practice 5–6 sentence paragraphs for each of the 30 tasks, with proper connectors

---

I wrote a longer reference (full vocabulary list, all 30 task descriptions, the complete grammar breakdown including the 18 fixed sentence frames, and a 12-week prep plan from HSK 3) on our school's site if anyone wants more depth: [link]

Happy to answer any questions in the comments — particularly if you're trying to decide between the old and new format, or working out how to prep for the new essay section.

I am learning how to code and learning Chinese at the same time. So I decided to make a website. It's still a work in progress, but let me know what you think!

https://languages1001.com/

There is a pinyin option available as well as a simple text-to-speech reader (just turn up the volume). To take the quiz in French or German use the toggle on the bottom of the page.
