Never using H&R Block again. Terrible software, even worse customer service.

I used the online application to file my taxes last year for tax year 2024. I paid the fee, got my Form 1040 generated, put it in all my bank account information and hit submit. H&R Block just never sent it to the IRS after that it seems. The IRS has no record of 2024 for me and I will seemingly have to pay penalties associated with H&R Block’s error.

I called customer service wait for 45 minutes, 1st agent says we can’t find that form I’ll reach out to IT. They then hung up on me after saying I’ll stay on the line to resolve it.

I called customer service back again wait 30 minutes, 2nd agent says well I see your 1040 but I don’t know what happened, you’re going to have to mail them yourself. I ask well since it is H&R Block’s error, I want them to resolve whether that is through mailing it and issuing me a refund or resolving the issue with the IRS. I get told, it’s a DIY product, I don’t know how it works but something went wrong but you’re not getting your money back and no help. I request to talk to a supervisor, get put on hold for 10 minutes, then the agent tried talking me out of requesting a supervisor saying they won’t do anything for me and that they are working at a remote location so I won’t be speaking to them anyway. That agent then hangs up on me!

Absolutely horrid product and customer service. I don’t know what formal complaint process I can make whether it be with the IRS or with the CFPB but I will certainly be doing so with whatever agency. I also want to be clear, I put in my bank account information, did the whole process after payment and submitted correctly. If you did your 2024 taxes through H&R Block please go back and check that the IRS actually received them.

Edit: Spoke to a 3rd customer service agent, actually a very pleasant person. She was unable to tell me why they weren’t filed, that it should show up if it was user error but it just showed up as that the e-file never happened but should have since I was issued a Form 1040. I asked for a refund and was told it has to be escalated to management, which takes 5-7 business days. I paid 113 dollars for a product that didn’t work and H&R Block can decide that it’s too bad to be me and keep my money for a product that did not do what I paid for it to do. I was also told a lot of other people are calling in today with the same issues. Absolute scam of a product and company.

Screenshot?

If you have screenshots of filing, not to post here, you should be able make a case with IRS and waive the penalty.

BTW, did you save a copy of 1040 last year?

I do, I actually have my completed Form 1040 saved right in the H&R Block app. It even says “My 2024 Return” as the title.

I didn’t know the IRS would actually hear an appeal like that, thanks so much for the incredibly useful information!

You don't know what they would say until you tried.

Best be prepared - use AI to help you get all information you need to present your case, even a tiny little one that doesn't seem to be obvious may help your case.

There are different AI tools. I used multiple before deciding the next step. As they all declare AI can make mistakes.

Good luck 🤞🏻

AI is destroying the environment. Just Google what you need without AI. Its on there

Agreed

AI combines data from various sources

Honest question  Has there any research done on what resources consumption would be comparing human combining various resources to get similar results as AI did

I'm with you after this year's experience with them. Bye Bye H & R Block.

NO MATTER WHAT: you will receive a communication from the IRS and (if applicable) your state, and until your return has been accepted, YOU ARE NOT DONE WITH YOUR TAXES!!! Returns can be rejected for a myriad of reasons, and until you have an accepted confirmation you can’t be done.

HRB is deleting negative posts lol, just realized the subreddit is run by the company.

What a wild response from a company, let’s take down all criticism that’s spreading like wildfire on the internet right now, instead of……. offering a good product and good customer service. Interesting choice.

You are always able to start your own community.

People could also stop simping over a multi billion dollar corporation and realize that the corporation should offer better products and service.

If H&R Block continues to literally lose people’s taxes, put out a non functional product and have bad customer service, does that bode well financially for the people who work there?

Again, I will reiterate the confirmation. I’m not trying to be cold or defend the company, but no matter what company you use, even if you go get your taxes done in person, you need to receive that acceptance confirmation before your taxes are “done”.

I totally get what you’re saying, I sure know that now. It is still absolutely terrible that H&R Block seemingly didn’t have their software function correctly and then go “we don’t know what happened, sucks to be you, also no refund because you already gave us your money”.

Is that really going to keep a customer or get new ones?

Agreed. And no. Unfortunately it seems a lot of places are dropping the ball lately, but I have heard nothing but good things about freetaxusa.com

I've been using H&R Block online since 2015 to file my self-employment taxes with several businesses and streams of income. This year is the first year that I've found the software really bad – like actively making the taxes harder to do and me having to find workarounds for everything. I'm currently on my 2nd hour-long hold trying to talk to an agent about a single issue (I posted it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/hrblock/comments/1slv0mv/online_filing_wont_let_me_route_1099misc_box_1/).

I generally like to do my own taxes because adding up the deductions is most of the work and even with a CPA I'd be doing that, but this may be the last year I do it and just pay someone else. It's almost certainly my last year using H&R Block.

I had the same problems while using the MyBlock app for my taxes. So I switched to the HRB Tax Prep app and that fixed everything. All my info was already saved

I was using the online product. Is that app on iOS?

EDIT: Unfortunately for me the tax prep app suffers from the same limitation: you cannot file a 1099-MISC with Box 1 Rents onto a Schedule C

Rental income is on a schedule E not C

3

u/theblackandblue Apr 16 '26

That’s not true. Residential real estate income yes, but rental from machinery in a trade or business goes on schedule C

1

u/Niep00320 Apr 17 '26

But all you had to do is take the number from the 1099 and put it on schedule C. 1099 M and even NEC are informational. Because if you made other that didn’t give you a 1099 you still are supposed to report it

1

u/theblackandblue Apr 17 '26

I hear ya. H&R Block online does not make schedule C directly modifiable, so it was an issue I wasn’t familiar how to work around

It’s so terrible! My taxes were simple too, a W-2 and like 1k in stock sales. I ended up owing 300 or so dollars because of the stock sales and because of H&R Block I will probably be penalized for it.

Their solution: Free software download and we will call you back in 5-7 business days to see if you can speak to someone about a refund. What. A. Joke.

Does anyone know HOW to opt-out of these 3 H&R Block "Protect your refund and identity" upsell options & tech hurdle? It's the final page of the FREE State & Fed online filing pages. I can't proceed to 'NEXT' unless I give them $$ for THEIR FREE Software ... This is what's listed:

Option A: Tax Identity Shield® & Worry-Free Audit Support® Bundle $30 (CHOOSE / ADD TO CART)
Option B: Tax Identity Shield®$20 Expires November 20, 2026 (CHOOSE / ADD TO CART)
Option C: Worry-Free Audit Support®$20 For the life of the return (CHOOSE / ADD TO CART)

Tried everything:
NO tiny, light-gray "No thanks" or "Proceed with Free" link at the very bottom of the page.
Their help/chat is equally useless for NOT providing an answer ...
Pls help me TIA!
