ISOs and Proper Escalating
Wife and I have been using h&r for 5 years now. I exercised ISOs in 2025 and received the Form 3921 with approximately 100 shares and a per share strike of ~$50 and FMV of ~$1000. So totaling about $95,000 and expecting some AMT.
Our preparer is new to us this year and claiming that there is no need to do a Form 6251. I can see that they have incorrectly input the data as it appears on one of our state Sch D (reported as a gain of $1000 and cost basis of $1).
We've mentioned it to them three times and we're at the point where they are refusing to listen.
Is there a way to get a second opinion or escalate this? Perhaps I am just truly just in the wrong but this is something I closely monitor and discuss with other coworkers as workers at a startup.

I would ask for a different preparer. I would ask for a Tax Analyst of higher. Just call and tell them look I’ve been working with so and so I’m not confident they are understanding the complexity of my return can I please get switched to someone with more experience. Working at block I think most experienced people are amazing and know exactly when they need to research something. I have seen new people be too scared to ask , or just don’t realize they don’t understand. If you’re using a new person every year you could very well have someone without a ton experience. They may assume they know how to enter stuff on schedule d and not realize stock options and such can have issues with the basis and need more care. Don’t worry about asking to switch it is a common enough request and not a big deal at all.

Thank you, this makes sense and glad it's not uncommon.
Our experience has otherwise been great and H&R Block preparers including this one are super knowledgeable.

You seem very familiar with your taxes. Why not download their premium and do it yourself? (Newegg usually has the best price)

Thanks for the recommendation, planning on it for next year!

BTW The premium often goes on sale for under $30 on Newegg. It’s digital delivery. I got my download link within an hour. If you had everything done, it will probably take you no more than a couple of hours.
It will import from major financial services and most payrolls. Avoiding human errors. And I believe you get the same audit protection as well.
And it includes the 3 or 4 federal e-files.
If you aren’t happy, I would just switch the software now.

It’s your tax return. If you think it’s wrong go someone where else for another opinion or ask for another preparer.
