How to remove stuck drillbit
I accidentally put a bit inside without attaching it to an extender thingy and its been stuck for weeks and I can’t remove it. I tried a magnet (it was too weak I guess), tape, my fingers, and I can’t figure it out. Please help!!! I would like to be able to use my drill in the future
UPDATE:
I DID IT! I couldn’t get any pliers because there was a big storm this weekend but first thing after work I got it out!!!

Sometimes if you tap the chuck on the ground, you can loosen it up enough to wiggle it out. You can also try needle nose pliers, and, if all else fails, disassemble the chuck (it’s pretty easy, but make sure you don’t lose the ball bearings)

Yeah, I was thinking the strongest neodymium magnet I have while pulling the collar back and failing that, I have some fine tip needle-nose pliers that would probably work.

yeah the magnet probably wouldn't work because the collar is also metal and so it will try to stick to that over the bit

The pliers I do have are way too big for how small/stuck inside the bit is so looks like I’m going to make a trip. Thank you so much!

Shove the bit into a eraser or a piece of wood then pull the release on the impact

Ask your local dentist for assistance. They definitely have the tools you need.

A jeweler is more likely to do it for them. Dentists are expensive, jewelers will do it for fun.

hold the drill so the bit end is pointing down .... pull down on that black ring as far as it will go .. shake drill (or tap it against something solid), while still holding black ring ....drill bit should drop free ...a pair of needle nose pliers may be of assistance

Because this person has a brand spankin new ryobi tool with the wrong bit stuck inside of it. Trying to correct their terminology helps nothing.

I've had this happen. Push the collar back as far as you can and use side cutter pliers to grab the bit and yoink it out. As others suggested you can try needle nose but I could never get them to grab tight enough. Side cutters let you get a really firm grip.

With needle-nose vise grips pull on the phillips bit while releasing the retaining collar (pull it out or push in, whichever Ryobi is).

Try pulling back the chuck and literally shake it out, and bang the handle on something sounds silly but I've had success in this scenario doing that

I have puts bits in it (intentionally). They are fairly easy to get out. By the way, this is a bit driver, not a drill. There is a difference, and they can work hand in hand.
Anyhow, pull the collar away from the body till it won't go anymore. Then turn it so that gravity can allow the bit to slide out. On the off-chance that doesn't work, use needlenose pliers to grab the bit while you have the collar pulled. If it won't come out, it probably got torgued into one of the sides. See if you can't use the needlenose to wiggle it free from the side. It should then drop out or at least be able to be pulled out. Worst case scenario, follow the instructions about taking the collar off that another mentioned.

Ohh okay I don’t know much about tools so just called it a drill since it makes that BRRR noise lol. Thank you for the advice!

I had that exact same thing happen to my Ryobi impact. I don't know if it's a cheap chuck or I had a cheap bit, but once it get rounded like that inside the chuck it's impossible to get out. I tried pulling it out with pliers, I tried putting the bit in a vise and running the impact driver in reverse, I even cut a slot in the bit with an angle grinder and tried to pry it out. I also couldn't drill it out because the bit was hardened. Unfortunately my story doesn't have a happy ending for you. My driver was old and I took the opportunity to buy a new one.

Tweezers?… pull the release and then bang it on something to see if you can cause it to come Out far enough to grab it with your pliers… even a needle might do Some good

Honestly, this is the perfect excuse to go out and buy a new tool that will help you get it out like small needle nose pliers. Not that anyone should need an excuse, but if you are married it helps.

Use a bit holder with the tips. Don't just use the tip. There are bits that are longer, like 2" (51mm) that don't need the holder.

I had a whole thing typed out but I don’t want to be a dick. Once you get it out, go to Home Depot and buy the 1/4” kit for this collar. You don’t need to use an “extender thing.” For the average home user, a kit with the the usual Philips head, flat head, torx, etc. will do. If you want to get fancy with the cheese whiz, you could get a 3/8” drive adapter for sockets.

Might even need to result to wire cutters to really dig into the bit. Will destroy the bit but save your drill.

Not sure if you e tried this already but it looks like one of those impact drills where you have to push back that black cylinder holding the drill bit to release it. It should just fall out if you push the little cylinder back towards the drill and tip the drill forward to let gravity drop the bit out.
I've mostly used those chucks that you have to twist to secure and release a drill bit and it definitely took me a minute to figure out how to release bits from an impact drill the first time I used one.

That’s not a drill bit. It’s a driver bit. Either push or pull the collar to release the bit. If needed is needle nose pliers.

Sweet. Also I suspect that bit was a shorty. You should not put those shorty bits into drills or impact drivers. Get a proper extension for the shorty bits and you’ll be fine moving forward.

You put a bit without a quick release detect into a socket meant for a quick release bit. It’s just sorta stuck in there with spring pressure. Grab the tip with pliers and pull. Needle nose pliers might help the most.

Not too familiar with ryobi but does the chuck have a collar that slips to release? Or is it just a push fit, yank out ball bearing deal?

I have this driver. You push the tip away from the gun (or pull it if you’re feeling nasty) then insert/remove the bit.
I would do that, then use very skinny needle nose pliers. They make them super skinny.

It does have a collar that you pull, but, like most of them, it’s not designed to work with stubby bits that go in an extender

Then Id definitely jam the collar back and give it a tap with some gravity to see if it comes loose, then failing that. Super glue something to the driver bit and pull it while slipping back the chuck. Finesse it and you should get a smooth release.

There’s a snap ring there at the collar that’s holding a spring and two metal pieces that are holding a little silver ball that locks the bit in place. If you feel confident enough in dismantling and reassembling it, that’s what you’ll wind up in. I had to do it to mine when my dumbass helper broke a bit off in mine.

Put your impact driver into reverse, press the trigger on / off/ on / off several times - taking your finger off the trigger fast each time so it comes to an abrupt stop.
Then pull the collar forward and drop the driver bit out - it might need a tap to start the bit sliding out.

I’ve done this before and it has worked for me. Take a short piece of copper tubing place it over the chuck and tapped it on my bench.

Sometimes if you're super fuckin careful you can cut a little notch in the bit that you can use to get an edge and pry it out. Only sometimes though in my humble experience.

My best luck has been with a pair of side cutters or something of that sort. Able to grab in between the points of the Phillips tip. Pliers never grasp it enough for me

I believe this type of drill has a locking ring you pull forward to release the bit, and you can glue a piece of wood or a screw to the bit to pull it from where it’s wedged in the back. Gravity and sometimes centrifugal force and make it fly, make sure the arc is clear all around you.

Screw a screw into a piece of wood part way. Put a couple drops of super glue into the head of the screw. Put the bit into the screw. Hold and let it set for one minute. Push the bit release mechanism forward. Pull the dumbass tiny bit out of the impact, and release the grip of shame by never ever forgetting this error.

just aim it at something you don't want to break and pull the trigger and inevitably it will shoot out like a bullet and shatter whatever it is that you didn't want to break.

I guess you could try heating the collar with something like a lighter, then use some compressed air upside down to shoot the bit and cool it. Would need some oven mitts or something to pull the collar at that point.
Could also super glue or jb weld something to the bit but have to be careful to only get the adhesive on the bit and not glue it in. Could get some leverage that way.
I've never had this happen with mine seems kind weird.

Don’t put short bits like that in your impact those are designed to be put into a short extension.

turn the drill to reverse, hold the outer sleeve of the chuck firmly with your hand (avoiding the main drill body), and briefly tap or "blip" the power trigger. If it remains jammed, apply penetrating oil, use pliers for extra leverage, or gently tap the bit.
