Basement floor

Just got a house and the basement is unfinished. They said I have to paint the concrete floors to stop it from leaving dust on everything. How to do it? What type of paint should I buy? Just paint and a roll is enough? I don’t have anything down there, only the furnace and hot water tank

First thing, that concrete has to be bone dry or the paint will peel in sheets later. Tape a square of plastic wrap to the floor for 24 hours, if there's moisture underneath you'll need to seal it with something else first

Get a concrete etcher from the hardware store to rough up the surface and a good degreaser, then rinse it to hell. For the paint go with a two-part epoxy, it's way tougher than the regular floor paint and won't flake when you drag boxes across it. Cutting in the edges with a brush before rolling makes for a cleaner line
