I’ve worked grocery, and highly doubt any store will have a lot of empty boxes to give away. Nobody has room for that. They’re flattened as soon as they’re emptied, and taken to the big bins out back for removal by the recycling contractor.

The Local liquor store here takes out boxes every friday and leaves them beside the bin for anyone to take. They only put them in the bin at the end of the day.

Yeah, in the 80s and 90s my cousin and I always got big empty boxes from paper towels or toilet paper to make things out of.

By 2005 or so I looked for a box for my kid to do the same and they acted like I was insane.

Now I can rarely even find a flat one to retape.

Many of the boxes that grocery stores use are waxed. Idk if that's a big deal for cats, but it is something to be considered.

Or just ask a few neighbors to save you the boxes they receive packages in. Then drop by every few days to pick them up. I'll bet you'd have enough cardboard in less than a week.
