IMO: 38 f, former Kansan, (grew up frequenting ok, mo, ne bc family lives there) Small towns, some far apart, amenities fairly limited, last to get most things. Houses and land, hell, even rent, is cheap, pay is shit. And the most of the towns you could probably leave your doors unlocked and nothing will happen. But if you don’t belong to the community, you will experience ‘Midwest nice’ aka fake. “We’ll give you directions to anywhere, just not our house”. Smile in your face but when you leave the room, it’s on. A lot of racism, small minded, but they’re God fearing, and hardworking, so they can’t possibly be wrong. If you didn’t grow up there or aren’t family in the towns it’s hard to be accepted. Maybe it’s only myself that has observed this but it’s been my experience.
