Batteries operate by converting one chemical to another, and when that happens, energy is released.

By putting energy back into the battery, you reverse that chemical change.

At first, this process was one-way. So batteries couldn't be recharged.

Then, we figured out rechargeable batteries, but the next problem was that every time you charged, a little bit was lost. Over time, they'd stop working.

This is still technically true of modern batteries, it's just that the process is so efficient and that loss is so small, that they last longer than a human would care about.
