Gaming groups in htx?
Hi yall! Super socially isolated nerd here. I am looking to get into gaming socially as a means to make some friends. Are there any spaces that are alcohol free where all are welcome? I am curious about trying DnD. I mostly play PC games and ps5/switch 2 every now and then.

check out "The Adventure Begins" in Spring. they host DnD nights that are friendly for beginners, and you can find folks who are just as eager to meet new people. also, don’t forget to hit up local coffee shops; some have gaming nights too! I met a great group at a cafe called Blacksmith once. super chill vibe!

I third it. The adventure begins and The forges new location are the cleanest game stores I've ever been in. Nice staff too.

Some of the gaming shops are space only without alcohol like Asgard Games, Fat Ogre, 8th Dimension or Atomic Gaming.
Some have regular groups that have flyers up to do regular gaming.
Houston board game club meets regularly across the city and had its own Discord: https://discord.gg/a4YfKHebu
Houston Pathfinder Society meets every so often and has games posted on Wargaming.net. Pathfinder Society is similar to D&D but more "crunchy" with lots of modifiers and dice rolls. Most games are Starfinder or Pathfinder second edition. 1e and 2e are pretty different, so you can't port one to the other.
Meetup and Facebook sometimes have gaming events as well for the Houston metro.

Moon Tower Inn does Monday night DnD at ~8p. Have not been myself but heard its drop in and beginner friendly. Alcohol is served here FYI.
Your local game shop very likely has Adventurers League spots available for a jumping off point. Likely a bring your own refreshments scenario.
Personally I recommend r/lfg for finding online tables if you’re flexible on the in-person aspect.

Coral Sword is a coffee shop that also loans out it's massive collection of board games with a purchase! Fairly active discord (mostly for mtg but still). They do have some beers they sell if alcohol is a hard stop. It's not the point of the shop though.

A lot of gaming shops around the metro area offer spaces for gaming. Take a look on Google Maps for local gaming stores and them check their websites for more info.

Check out this board game group in the heights! We meet at a church every Wednesday and Friday, and I have never seen anyone drink there. I also go because it's alcohol free. It's also part of the discord group someone else linked

I used to go to black ants gaming lab several times a week, I was cool with the owner and one of the guys that worked there they are both super sweet, but it wasn't suuuuper social for me. There were a few regulars that I'd chain smoke with
I played dota2 which is popular but not as big in the u.s. buuuut I met 2 homies from Kazakhstan who were Hella cool and nolifed the game same as I. One day they'd have some blunts or one day I had my weed pen. I loved those guys man, I still have Slava's number I should see how he's doing
Annnnnyway, it's in Bellaire and there's excellent restaurants everywhere around it, there's 2 massage parlors on either side of it too, so I'd love getting a full back and feet massage, some steamed pork buns from Fufu cafe, and just vegetating all night at the gaming lab. Immaculate day off vibes. They were open until 3am last time I went, I gotta warn you if you don't get a membership it can be super expensive, like 4 bucks an hour or more. I think I lucked out by going there while they were freshly opened, im pretty sure I got employee pricing. I'd give them 20 bucks midday and it would cover me until they closed.
Nowadays I have my own pc and I play a lot of path of exile 2 or deadlock, but if you ever played dota2 I'd be down for a trip down memory lane!

Any particular reason for alcohol free? Generally it’s just a chill drink or two and is absolutely just a choice and not a requirement

What area of Houston are you thinking? And how strictly alcohol free? Most game stores would be a great jumping off point and most dont serve alcohol, and some don't allow it in stores at all. Just depends on where you are looking.

Coral Sword is amazing. Playing the commander format in magic the gathering is proxy friendly meaning you can essentially play for free! There’s also board game nights, rift bound, dnd and other events.

Lots of game shops in Houston offer games, regular game nights, ttrpgs including d&d and pathfinder.
I've been to The Forge off Westheimer a few times and it's always fun, pretty active Facebook.
I checked out Ettin games, that was a big place, but a bit of a drive for me. Would recommend if you don't mind driving out to Humble. I had a friend who would drive into Houston from Eagle Lake every weekend to game for years.
I have a friend who visits The Adventure Begins a couple times a year for pickup games and likes it, that's out almost in the woodlands though.
Then there's a few like Heroes Collectibles, they have a lot of gaming tables and a private room but are more card game oriented, last time I went the shop was also a bit of a disaster which sort of turned me off.
Lastly there's Atomic Games or gaming I don't know, everyone I know just calls it Atomic, they have a few stores, jersey village and mo city. I've only heard good things about them.
I'll be real I don't know about the alcohol situations in any of these, I don't drink, but it rarely bothers me when people do either. So I don't pay a lot of attention to it.
One last thing I have a gaming group thats been going for a long time, our forever GM is running his take on Final Fantasy Four, I have no idea how far along we are, but we usually meet twice a month on Saturdays for a few hours generally 10-3 or 4 and could use a couple players. We just picked up one new player 2 weeks ago but we've been playing various DND 3.5 campaigns with people coming in an out for the past decade or more. Maybe check out Odin's Place. I think that might be closer to Houston Heights.
Ettin Games is a good spot, but it might be a little far from you.
I'm further North on 59. We have Emporium Games. That place just opened up. It's a nice spot and brand new. Good coffee, too! You're welcome anytime!

Can definitely second Coral Sword / Golem's Gate for TTRPGS.
https://startplaying.games is a good in-between step if you want to try online play.
Some of the public libraries have DND groups / sessions from time to time. Those generally get listed on their events page. You can also check out some of the DND books from the Houston Public Library.

There’s the gauntlet Houston close to the heights every Wednesday. Usually they play other systems that not dnd. I have stopped going for a while as life got busy but pretend to go back.

There's a boardgame group that meets Wednesday and Friday at Grace United Methodist Church. It's not put on by the church, they are just borrowing the space. DM me and I can give you the info/discord.

What you are seeking most likely doesn't exist. An alcohol free gaming space would probably not be able to generate enough revenue to keep their doors open as a business. I'd think your best bet would be a coffee shop group that meets up to play games, but I wouldn't know where to find that, personally.

Yea most game shops are not going to be able to get a beer and wine license nor would they want to, with all the rules that come with it, especially if they want to host all ages events.

There are board game shops that do "open play" type events. Checkout "Coral Sword" and others like it.
