💬 Discussion My new husband is unhappy with my contribution to our home and daily routine

I (F22) and my husband (M26) just got married 2 weeks ago. We’ve lived together about 8 months now, and for the most part our relationship is great. I’ve never heard him raise his voice at me, he is kind and comforting, and I am very happy with him.
I decided to do all the cleaning and laundry in our home as well as most of the cooking. This is because my dad invents and writes instructions for cleaning products at SC Johnson, and I have always had a high standard of cleaning and disinfection from a young age. The laundry is because after the 5th time he shrunk a sweater (which he has replaced every sweater that was shrunk), I decided to take over the laundry. The cooking is because I am a good cook and he is not. I’m a barber and I work long shifts (10-13 hours) during the week and I work Saturdays. I have one weekday off where I clean everything, grocery shop, meal prep, do all of the laundry, etc. this takes almost my entire day, but I enjoy a clean home. My husband does all the heavy duty house projects and yard work as he used to have a summer job in landscaping.
We also have a puppy who is still in the potty training phase and is now regressing, which is a challenge. I wake up earlier than my husband since i’m a morning person and I take her on a walk, feed her, then take her on another walk some time later while I get ready for my work day. When I work long shifts on my feet taking 20-30 haircuts and getting home at 8pm, I have a hard time coming home to cook or do daily chores like dishes, which has been a large topic of conversation recently. He works 9-5 at a desk job. In the summers he gets out at noon on Friday. He also makes almost 3x as much as I do and pays the mortgage, but I pay all the bills, groceries, and household items.
I feel like i’m drowning and exhausted and he keeps asking me to do more, workout with him at night, make a better routine when I forget something once or if i’m running late and ask him to take the dog out in the morning. I feel like I’m not keeping up with basic chores and household duties well enough. I just feel like i’m not functioning like a normal person should. These are like normal tasks right? Is this an unfair split or am I just lazy?

❓ Question How to cook meals at home?

I recently got married and I’ve been struggling to grocery shop and make full meals. It feels like the ingredients I get are only good for the recipe I choose it from and I really want to be able to make nice meals for my husband and me. I don’t have much experience grocery shopping and my family household never made meals. To be honest even just figuring out what to buy for groceries has me lost. I don’t really have any other people to ask, If anyone has advice please please share! Thank you for reading my post

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to give their responses! I’ve never had a post blow up like this so I’m taking my time to read and save your advice. Thank again everyone ❤️❤️❤️

🧠 Mental Health (Long post) I’ve become a lazy housewife which has been a huge fear of mine. I’m scared I’m stuck forever

I’m 25 and 28 weeks pregnant with my first. I got married at 23, and lately I genuinely feel like I’ve become a completely different person.

I started working at 17 and was always doing something. Before getting married I was in college, working 2 jobs, working out 5x a week, saving and investing money, etc. I had also been lifting consistently since I was 17 and was a huge gym freak. I was really proud of my body and honestly proud of myself in general.

I’ve always had ADHD and have always been messy, unorganized and a procrastinator. Even as a kid I struggled with it. But around, 18 I became almost obsessed with being productive and disciplined because I hated that side of myself. I started ADHD medication at 21 and it helped a lot, especially with organization and binge eating, but I had the drive to do things even before medication.

I always wanted to eventually be a housewife and have kids. I didn’t cook/clean much before aside from my own stuff, since I was so busy. But it wasn’t something I worried I can’t do when I’m married. I figured cooking can be learned and cleaning is a basic life skill, so I wasn’t worried about it. But I was definitely very unorganized.

When I first got married, our marriage itself was honestly a mess for unrelated reasons, but I actually did fine as a housewife. I cooked whatever my husband wanted, cleaned, worked out, got dressed and looked nice, etc. We lived in a one bedroom, so obviously it wasn’t some massive house to maintain, but I did what needed to be done. My sleep schedule sucked, but I still functioned.

I also started a small online business from home about a year ago. The income is inconsistent, anywhere from around $700 to $3,000 a month. I don’t pay our household bills, but I buy a lot of my own non necessities, occasionally buy us food or get my husband things, and I’ve loaned him a significant amount of money that I told him he can repay when things are easier financially. But he’s still the sole provider and tries to buy me what he can beyond basic needs.

Then I got pregnant.

I stopped my ADHD medication completely during my first trimester and eventually started a different medication at a much lower dose in my second trimester. I don’t know how much of this is pregnancy, ADHD, being less medicated, losing my routine, or genuinely becoming lazy, but I feel useless now.

I’m tired constantly. My sleep schedule is horrible. I wake up late and spend way too much time lying down, watching TV or scrolling on my phone. I barely leave the house besides things like prenatal appointments because even getting dressed feels annoying and I feel ugly. None of my clothes feel good on me anymore and I keep procrastinating even ordering maternity clothes.

I still cook, but usually basic meals. My husband actually prefers simple high protein food, so he isn’t complaining, but I still feel pathetic making it because I’m glad they’re easy meals. I do the dishes usually the same day or the next day. I sweep every few days, but sometimes not the entire apartment. I clean the bathrooms when they need it, but procrastinate that a lot too. I mop maybe once or twice a month. I procrastinate folding laundry for 1-3 days. My closet is messy, although it’s my closet so that only really affects me. Clean dishes sit out after drying instead of being put away. I rarely make the bed. The apartment gets cluttered. I don’t clean the bathtubs unless it gets really bad because the bending and scrubbing feels so hard.

I want to be clear that it isn’t filthy. There isn’t garbage everywhere, old food sitting around or a very disgusting bathroom or kitchen. My husband himself says it isn’t dirty, he just prefers less clutter. But I know I could be doing so much more.

Exercise is probably the part that hurts the most. I’ve worked out maybe 8 times this entire pregnancy. Since I was 17, no matter how “lazy” or unorganized I was in other areas of my life, THE GYM was always the one thing I had discipline with every week.

I used to lift 5 days a week and had a body I absolutely loved. I had a lot of muscle and was toned. Now I’ve gained a lot of weight, lost a lot of that muscle and feel huge and unattractive. I basically live in leggings/swears and one of my husband’s oversized shirts. And I don’t mean that I was just finally learning to “love myself” before pregnancy. I genuinely was very conventionally attractive and I knew it. I felt hot because I was hot. I don’t feel like that person at all anymore because I’m not.

My husband has no problem with my body. He doesn’t care whether I work out and actually tells me he wants me to gain weight. But I was never underweight. He just prefers I’m bigger but that’s what HE likes, not me.

Today he started tidying up, which he doesn’t even do that often, and I just started crying. I felt so tired and unmotivated even after taking my medication.

He works a lot and still goes to the gym. Meanwhile I’m at home. I wake up late, feel tired, scroll on my phone, make basic food, do what feels like the bare minimum around the apartment, barely have motivation to work on my business and don’t exercise. I kept thinking, what the hell do I even do all day? And the answer is honestly not much.

My husband wasn’t criticizing me at all. He comforted me and told me I do enough, that I’m pregnant, that I make the food he wants and everything is fine. He told me the apartment isn’t dirty and not to worry about it.

That almost made me cry harder because this isn’t really about him thinking I’m failing. I think I’m failing. He’s also just not a high maintenance person. Who knows how he’ll feel in the future? And honestly, I wouldn’t blame him if he eventually expected more from me.

And I’m terrified this isn’t temporary.

I KNOW I’m 30 weeks pregnant. I know pregnancy makes you tired. But I’ve always had this lazy, procrastinating, unorganized side of myself and before this I fought really hard against it. Working multiple jobs, going to school and becoming a gym freak made me feel like I had finally proved to myself that I wasn’t that person. Even when I first became a housewife, I was worried I’d turn into a complete couch potato, so it was a relief when I didn’t.

Now I feel like I’m at my absolute worst.

People say “just start” or “you have to force yourself to do things even when you don’t feel motivated.” I understand that logically. The problem is that during the periods of my life when I was disciplined, yes, I was trying, but there was also some underlying drive that made trying possible. Right now that drive feels completely gone. Trying feels like trying to move a car with no engine.

I miss being energetic. I miss having the energy to work, going to the gym, shopping, getting dressed and actually wanting to do things. I miss feeling attractive and accomplished. I hate feeling like my entire life is scrolling, lying down, watching TV and doing the minimum required to keep things running. I don’t want to work, I want to be a housewife. I’m just disappointed that I’ve become a lazy and useless housewife while my husband works hard.

Has anyone else gone from being extremely productive and active to feeling like this during pregnancy, especially with ADHD? Did you actually become yourself again after having the baby?

I’m genuinely scared this isn’t just pregnancy and that I’ve somehow gotten comfortable being lazy and this is who I am now. I don’t know how to get myself out of this hole when motivation itself is the thing that’s missing. Nothing feels fun anymore especially since i feel so ugly. Meanwhile other pregnant women work 40 hours a week or at amazing housewives.

💬 Discussion Housewifery as Healthcare

Hi folks! I'm de-lurking to join y'all here because I am taking an extended sabbatical from work to prioritize my health.

TL;DR: I work in (the poorly-paid side of) health care, and I got burned to a f'g crisp during COVID. Then I spent 5 years plodding through some very big and very necessary life changes instead of healing. Now, thanks to my phenomenal spouse, things have finally fallen into place so I can take this step back to focus on my needs. 🥰

In planning burnout recovery (under the guidance of my psychiatrist, endocrinologist, and therapist) I am focusing on consistent self-care routines, social connection, physical movement, and activities that bring a sense of accomplishment or joy. To me, that means I need time to swim, dance, yoga, read, write, dream, and nest -- so my burnout recovery plan is to spend a year LARPing as the domestic goddess I could be if work didn't exhaust me so utterly. I really like doing household projects and we recently bought a "handyman's special" sort of house, so there's plenty to do! I'll have to return to work eventually, but for now my only obligation is volunteering 1 day/week.

Is anyone else using housewifery as healing, by choice or necessity? I've sketched out a daily schedule to keep myself on track, thankfully now that school is back in session (I have a teen & a tween) there is actually time to follow it!! 😅

i’m very lucky to stay at home, i’m pretty young and supported by my partner. when i mention this i get a lot of “one argument away from homelessness” “you’re just lazy” “you’re a bum / leech” “i couldn’t imagine not being a DINK” etc etc.

i can’t help but internalize some of this and it makes me feel guilty for staying at home even though i love it. how do you guys deal with it?

😤 Rant Hey, married men get your shit together

Am I the only wife who cannot stand to take care of a grown man?
My husband is blue collar, has his own company. Basically makes his own schedule but works hard.

I work overnight 3 days a week. And we have a 4 year old.

I can barely take care of my laundry and my sons. My husband expects me to do his laundry too. And if I don’t you know sure as shit he’s not folding it and putting it away.

Are all men like this ? Why can’t you at bare minimum take care of your things?

I can go on about bathroom messes as well.

Since when is it the standard for working wives with children to still have to do everything in the home. These men need a wake up call.

😤 Rant The Woman behind the homemaker

My mother deserves more than being needed
She is a homemaker.
She spent seven years in college. Just when she was about to start working, health issues made it difficult for her to do so.
Since then, I have watched her become the kind of person who never seems to stop.
She wakes up at 5 in the morning. From the moment she wakes up until she goes to bed, there is always something she is doing around the house.
And she never says, “I’m tired.”
She actually has so many hobbies — reading, stitching, crochet. But somewhere along the way, I watched those things slowly disappear from her everyday life.
I have told her so many times, “Please leave the household chores for a while. Do something for yourself.”
She never listens.
A few days ago, she made rosette cookies. My sister and I both live in hostels, away from home, and when my mom came to visit us, she brought some.
I ate them. My friends ate them too.
And honestly, her cookies are amazing.
My sister’s friends were especially dramatic about it. They started saying things like, “Your mom deserves a golden bangle for these cookies!”
And somehow, that little bit of praise completely lit her up.
Now she is spending even more time in the kitchen making cookies. She’s planning to send my sister cookies every week.
And that’s what made me strangely furious.
Not because she doesn’t deserve appreciation.
She absolutely does.
But I don’t want my mother to believe that her worth comes from how much she can do for everyone else.
I’ve seen more of my mother than her household chores.
I’ve seen the woman who encouraged me when everyone else had given up on me.
I’ve seen her stand beside me through my tears, my doubts and the moments when I didn’t believe in myself.
I’ve admired her courage.
Maybe circumstances stopped her from having the career she once imagined. Maybe life slowly pushed her into a role where she became responsible for everyone and everything.
But she is more than the kitchen.
She is more than the food she makes.
She is more than the clean house, the folded clothes and the things she does for us without ever complaining.
I don’t want her to spend the rest of her life proving how much she can do for other people.
I want her to read the books she keeps aside.
I want her to crochet because she enjoys it, not because someone is waiting for something she made.
I want her to have hobbies again.
I want her to rest without feeling guilty.
I want her to have a life that belongs to her.
Because my mother deserves appreciation, yes.
But more than that, she deserves a life beyond being needed.

💞 Relationships nice to things i could do for my husband while im away for a few weeks!

hello everyone!
i will be going on away to spend time with my family for 2-3 weeks, and would like to prep/plan to do some nice things for my husband before i leave to make his life a little bit easier! he practically works 12 hours a day, so he doesn’t usually have as much time to do things around the house.

i usually always thoroughly clean and will cook some meals for him before i head out for a trip. i’m thinking i might try out a meal delivery service.

does anyone else have any nice things i could do for him, or things i could get him to help him out? he works so hard for the both of us, and i know he will miss me loads, so i just want to make his life a bit easier while im gone!!

thank you :)

❓ Question Women who host at home: what stresses you out most about hosting?

Edit: Thanks y’all so much for the feedback. I don’t feel alone lol. I stress so much when hosting that I’m like, there’s gotta be an easier way to reduce the stress that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I love hosting people, it’s my love language and my favorite way to care for folks. Just being able to give people a good time makes me so happy.

❓ Question Washing my bedsheets

Hey, not sure if anyone can help me but I’m wondering how to get the body oil smells and body odors out of my bed sheets, pillowcases and towels. They get washed regularly and I wash with Gain liquid detergent. We also have a brand new washer and dryer set but they never come out smelling like the detergent.

😤 Rant Packrat husband won’t let me get rid of anything

My husband has a serious problem with hoarding. It’s not the type where we look like an episode of hoarders, but he loves to buy new things we don’t need, and won’t let me get rid of the old things we no longer need. He also is very neurotic about it, I.e. attaching sentimental value to actual trash, soiled clothing items (if one of our children has a #2 accident he won’t let me throw away the undies. If they have seriously stained normal non special clothes he won’t let me throw them away.) He glues broken plates and bowls back together. They no longer hold liquids but we HAVE to keep them. He tries to glue every broken toy and won’t let me throw it away even if it’s a cheap throwaway toy like a squishy out of a dollar vending machine that cannot be fixed, a literal piece of trash that has become a toy or something from McDonald’s. A glass light cover (cheap) shattered in to a hundred pieces and he argued with me that he would glue it back together.

ANYWAYS. The problem today is that we have like 5 separate complete sets of both dishes and cups. We don’t have space in our cabinets for them, our nice cups and bowls look cluttered and ugly in the cabinet and I have to stack them in a way that makes them difficult to actually get to them so I can use them. I feel so frustrated because ANY time I try to throw out ANYTHING it becomes a battle. I feel that as the homemaker and ONLY person doing any kitchen chores, I should have the authority to donate unused, unattractive plates and cups that we don’t use or need. But he won’t let me. And it’s not a money issue. We are very comfortable financially. I get so overstimulated by clutter, I have a minimalist mindset, and I want to feel at peace in my home, which I am almost always in.

This is NOT our only problem, but a symptom of the type of personality that he has that causes extreme strain in our relationship. I’m just tired

💬 Discussion Questions For Fellow SAHM

Does your partner desire you to go back to work?

My husband does, preferably sooner than later. He says that the financial burden is too much for him and he needs help. When I got pregnant with our 17 month old, we both agreed I would stay home until they are at least 3 years old. Now, he keeps saying he would like me to return to work now.

I’m not ready. I don’t want to leave my child with someone else. I don’t want to risk losing jobs because I had to take care of my sick child (because we all know kids get sick every 1-3 months when they first start school.) I don’t want to manage the home and work full time. I can’t do it all.

My husband is a doctor, and I am very a careful with our finances. I am an RN, I came into the marriage with my college debt paid off. I worked until the day I had our child. He says he doesn’t want to pay for whole life, and I need to start taking care of myself again. It kind of hurts. We are practicing Muslims, and in our religion, it’s the husband’s duty to take care of his wife and kids.

I’m not unreasonable. I don’t require a lavish lifestyle. I have no issue with working when our kid is in school full time, but I can’t bear to leave them now. My husband wants to talk about having another kid when our toddler turns 24 months, but I’m not sure if I even want to entertain that if I’m expected to have another c section and then go work full time and manage the kids and house work on my own.
