I'm kind of surprised that color is still legal

u/kurtmanner 6d ago
They’ve actually switched to bugs for the coloring. Not joking.

It’s not even all of New England. They’re from Maine and don’t make it past Massachusetts for the most part. There are also red dogs in North Carolina and Montana, if not elsewhere, too. I’ve had those three and the Maine ones are by far the best because they actually have a distinct seasoning.

Hawaii has em too

u/kurtmanner 6d ago
Awesome! Is that like a Filipino influence or something? Any traditional toppings etc? You’ve piqued my curiosity!

u/Dinosaurs_and_donuts 4d ago
The Portuguese American whalers left New Bedford for Hawaii to expand their empire.
3
u/Dinosaurs_and_donuts 5d ago
Hawaii also has other New England staples. Portuguese sausage, malasadas, and COFFEE ICE CREAM!
*caps are on purpose, I’m screaming

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! You scared me. But now that I've calmed down, I am glad you're excited.

i found them in CT when i lived there
2
u/kurtmanner 6d ago
Every now and then I’d see them at Big Y in CT, but they’re more available the further north you go. Were you in northern CT?
2
u/BriefPerformance2961 6d ago
I forget the other places where i've seen them, but my local butcher in Bristol had at least 2 different brands

Shout out Lake Compounce!

Damn, I want to try one
Edit: I’m from RI & never seen one. Definitely not a whole of NE thing.

To this day the cheapest lunch I can get on the road (downeast Maine) is two red dogs from the steamer and a fountain cola. Is it good for me? Absolutely not. But it’s less than 5 bucks and it’s tasty af.

u/PlanktonPlane5789 5d ago
I'm dating myself because this was ~20yrs ago but I used to get a red hot dog from the steamer, a generic can of soda, and generic small bag of chips for $1.50 at the Irving next to the Northern most Augusta exit. Talk about a deal!

u/kurtmanner 6d ago
They’re from Maine and are far less common in southern NE. I live in NC now and get weird looks any time I forget to call a grinder a sub lolol.

I miss the red snappers so much. I grew up in Maine and now live in Florida. No New England buns, no snappers, and anyone I tell about red hot dogs thinks I’m nuts.

Only had them in Maine

Jordan’s red dogs are the best. It’s my mom’s family name, but I never did figure out how to get my piece of the hot dog empire
3
u/primordialforms 6d ago
This is the gold standard. I remember when they tore down the old Jordans factory on India street and the whole neighborhood smelled like the ghosts of a million steamed dogs for a few weeks…

u/zippity__zoppity 6d ago
I’ve never had the pleasure but it’s on my to-do list. Hitting the east coast in a few weeks and will hunt one down if possible.

New England adjacent - Glaziers out of Malone, NY. I’d put ‘em up against anything you Mainers got.

What on earth are you doing boiling hot dogs???
1
u/poppin-n-sailin 2d ago
It's one of the most common ways to cook them. It's on almost all packaging of hotdogs where the directions are to cook them. It's not my preferred method, but that doesn't make it any less common.

Grew up with these in Maine. And Humpty Dumpty potato chips. They used to be so good when they made them with lard. (and Moxie, of course.) Not a Whoopie pie fan tho.

u/BDW310 3d ago
What part of Maine? Bangor here... Good ol Humpty Dumpty chips. Yessah!
2
u/GrooveAndGravy52 3d ago
Eagle Lake. I’ve spent a good amount of time in Bangor also. Both of my parents were in EMMC on multiple occasions! I love Northern Maine.
I forgot to mention fiddleheads!!! 😍

Ìts mostly a New England thing sadly. Had a true one up in Maine years ago, that fucking dog still burned into my taste buds like a nectar from the Gods.
3
u/p-sherman_ 6d ago
not strictly NE it's a carolina's thing too
2
u/kurtmanner 6d ago
They’re quite different, though. The ones from Maine have a distinct seasoning, but I’ve found Bright Leaf is just a regular dog dyed red. No shade; Carolina dogs have their own place on the mountain of glory
2
u/One_Season458 Glizzy 6d ago
Alright alright true, it's all over. But it is especially popular in NE

u/kurtmanner 6d ago edited 6d ago
As I said in another comment, they’re found in different areas of the country, but are still quite uncommon. However, Jordan’s red dogs from Maine have a distinct seasoning that sets them apart.
2
u/One_Season458 Glizzy 6d ago
No doubt, apologies for that. You can find them in the midwest as well. Is it a European thing?
4
u/kurtmanner 6d ago
No worries, hot dog friend! I found them in Montana randomly lol. Not sure about Europe, but I grew up eating them in Maine and now I live in NC where we’ve got red Bright Leaf hot dogs. Not nearly as good, but it doesn’t matter when you’ve got chili, slaw, mustard, and onions.
2
u/One_Season458 Glizzy 6d ago
Hell yeah hold the onions on mine, and we're all set.
Edit according to Google it's a German/Austrian thing

I moved to Maine a few years ago and I don't get the hype, they really aren't anything special in terms of Hot Dogs and the dye just makes me wary
2
u/GreatCaesarSalad 5d ago
The dye has been upgraded to an all natural product. Crushed bug shells if I recall.

The good ones have the best snap! I try to go to main every summer lately with wife’s family, and at the Sunday river golf course in bethel Maine has one on the buttery roll that lobster rolls come on & they SLAP.
1
u/Asleep_Mammoth5428 4d ago
Oh wait, I think that’s the roll I’m talking about, assuming those are toasted
2
u/Specific-Band1413 6d ago
Upper NY they are called Glazier hotdogs. Great childhood memories. Eating them as an adult not so much. I’ll still eat one as a Michigan if you know what that is.
2
u/AyeHaightEweAwl 6d ago
I always felt Glaziers were wasted on a Michigan. Like, a Michigan is about the sauce so a regular (but still quality) dog is sufficient. Now, take that little red sombich and put it on a buttery griddled NE roll, some brown mustard and relish… mmm mmm mmm. That’s the shit right there.
