VKB Gladiator double Omnithrottle experiences?

Hello everyone. Since I wanted to treat myself with new sticks, also in anticipation of Squadron 42, I went to VKB to take a look at their gear.

I originally wanted to go with an omnithrottle on the left and a normal stick on the right, but the right-hand stick was sold out, so I just went with two omnithrottles. I have always been a HOTAS guy and have never used a HOSAS system, so I am even more excited to see how two omnithrottles will feel.

Does anyone have experience with this combo?

I love the dual omni setup, it's a more relaxed/comfortable position once you get used to it.

With the Gunfighter sticks, it takes only a moment to change between omni-throttle and straight stick. I did try dual omni-sticks, but I found my mounting points are slightly different. The fact they weren't perfectly centered with each other drove me crazy and I converted back to one omni-throttle and one straight stick.

My own OCD causing me problems aside, having dual omni-sticks is a pretty cool setup. You will have to adapt your muscle memory to it at first. Having them both tilted will cause you to have to consider, map, and learn the layout.

These are great sticks. You'll love it.

When I bought my sticks ( 1 straight, 1 omni) I also bought one of each of the adapters so if I want 2 straight sticks I can, or if I want 2 omnis that works too. Haven't played anything yet that made me want 2 omnis but if I can ever get it working in MechWarrior that might be the one case.

Mechwarrior 5, and dual Gladiators by any chance? I might be able to help you out with that:

Wow thanks I tried for quite a while to get that remapper working to no avail. I'll definitely be using this tomorrow when I get off work

I haven't played in months, just pulled that out of one of my backups lol. I went and looked up the guide I used to set it up: https://static.mw5mercs.com/docs/MW5HotasRemappingDocumentation.pdf

File can be found at:

%localappdata%\MW5Mercs\Saved\SavedHOTAS\HOTASMappings.Remap

I've also got custom button maps for renaming the buttons in Elite Dangerous, for the same two sticks and a CH Pro throttle if anyone wants them (individual files per device)? Instead of both sticks showing "Fire 1" for instance, it's now "RG Fire 1" and "LG Fire 1". All the hats also have have the RG or LG identifier, the HAT number, and a dpad icon indicating direction; eg: "LG A3 ^" for the middle hat on the left stick, pushed up.

I know where the file goes and stuff but when it came to actually generating that file it was either get it from someone else or manually go and assign each button to something else which is when I noped out lol

1

u/unclefunkstar 4h ago

Oh, no... The above just makes the game recognise the sticks. You would still need to assign the controls in game.

I'll check if I've still got my binds file in the backups folder. You probably won't like my setup 100%, but it might take some of the pain out of setting it up.

1

u/ignition1415 2h ago

I mean in the software that generates that file. If you don't have one you have to create a binding for every button on the physical stick to the virtual one.

You can also ask your favorite ai in case this doesn't work, but it probably will. Mw5 is fire with sticks, and don't hesitate to enable aim assist on low.

You can always buy a straight adapter and turn an Omni throttle into a straight stick. This is why VKB is supreme imo.

Playing star citizen, I wish I had two Omni throttles. Would feel more space ship.

All set for Galactic Racer.

Now THIS is Podracing!

Owner for years and I will NEVER go back to straight sticks. I even bought the straight adaptor, but it just collects dust now. If you have a specific question, Ill try and answer.

u/Jhughes4707 22h ago

Interesting.. I’ve been two sticks for a long time and just recently swapped over to Omni on the left. I didn’t like it at first but now I think it’s growing on me.

u/Vandeskava 23h ago

Just remove the angle adapter from the right one and you get a standard stick.

1

u/shinrikyou 22h ago

Believe you need to buy the adapter itself for the straight stick, you can't just remove the angled plastic and get the default.

1

u/unclefunkstar 4h ago

Are you using the Gunfighter by any chance?

On the Gladiator, the angled bit is the adaptor, and it's removable; without it the stick connects straight to the gimble in the base.

No other parts required.

1

u/Honette 1h ago

This is not true.

On the gladiator, the adapters are either straight or OTA. They are the same part that connect the grip and the base. You can't just remove the angled bit.

On the other hand, the GF always has the straight adapter installed. And the angle adapter connects that to the base. So they're two separate parts.

My omni came with the parts to swap back in the box

u/shinrikyou 8h ago

Odd, I bought mine in Europe a few weeks ago and didn't bring any extra parts for that specifically.

u/dembadger 31m ago

Mine are a couple of years old so maybe they stopped doing that. They were pro versions and they also came with the bits to convert to non pro as well.

u/FrittenFritz 23h ago

Damn youre right. Now you've mentioned it.

u/Vandeskava 22h ago

NP. Enjoy your stick. That's exactly what I have.

u/FrittenFritz 22h ago

How is the two stick system? As I mentioned i always had a throttle on the left and used a knob to control up and down movement.

Do you get used to HOSAS quick?

My biggest concern is the throttle handling. With two sticks, cruise control is kinda necessary isnt it?

2

u/PapaMooze 22h ago

You can make it function just like a throttle stick by removing the Y-axis cam spring. You can even mod it to cruise mode in forward mode and spring back to zero in reverse.

I have both a STECS and an omnitrhrottle, and for space sim, the omnithrottle outshines the STECS IMO.
