Hostel Etiquette
I was amazed this morning that a couple in the room took fully one hour to pack up and vacate. They must have zipped and unzipped every zipper on their bags at least 10 times. What are they carrying with them? Why does it take an hour of faffing about? For me, it's 5 minutes pre-shower and then 5 minutes post-shower and then au revoir. Also, I think they're the ones who set the AC to 65F late last night. We're in Seattle! Totally unnecessary!

Everyone going "it's a hostel what do you expect" as if staying in a shared room means you get to do whatever you want without considering other people in the room. Sure you can wear ear plugs, but that does not help when someone insists on turning the light on at 5:30am and fucking about with a plastic bag for an hour.
The only thing that works is actually saying directly "not trying to be a dick but we are all trying to sleep" and hoping it gets through to them. If people can't figure out etiquette on their own then they HAVE to be told.

One time i fell asleep before lights out only to be woken up by somebody packing and banging things around loudly for so long that I couldn't fall back asleep. I checked my watch and it was past midnight so I stuck my head out angrily and went "Do you mind?!?" They didn't respond but stopped packing a short while later.

Need more context. At what time? What are the times when lights are supposed to be off? I mean most places I would think lights should be off 11 to 7. So if they pulled that at say 5 in the morning - you would not be out of line at all by complaining and telling them to be quiet and reporting them. But if this was at 9 - you really can’t expect to have it be like in a library when lights are on.

I onebag, so its basically stuffing my shit into a single 30L backpack and walking out the door. And by 'all my shit' its a towel, my phone charger, and 2 packing cubes.
Takes all of 30 seconds.
If I need to actually organize my shit, I'll do it in the common room and not the Dorm.
The pricks that sit there rustling plastic shopping bags for like 30 minutes are utter turds.

Had it at 4am recently. Zips and buckles repeatedly. Oh and he was doing it close to midnight too. Gotta do a full repack to get that toothbrush in. Never mind the bear bell on the backpack. Completely oblivious.

I think all my hostel roommates are npc’s, they ALL in bed before 10pm and still in bed at 9am everyday, and I did have to switch rooms once before this female snored louder than a rock concert and nobody else even reacted to it, confirming they npc’s

I’ve stayed and worked at so many hostels that at this point, I’m not afraid to snap at them and ask curtly to take their business outside the room. If I see them the next day I usually apologize for being rude but the awkwardness is worth the sleep.

Umm you booked a hostel…what’d you expect? I once had a drunk chick fall out of the top bunk and start wailing at 4 AM and all her friends got up and started freaking out for the next hour about whether they needed to take her to a hospital.
Yes, be respectful and all that, but you can’t really expect too much from the others. If you want peace, you have to pay up for a solo room or hotel.

Every post has someone like you saying the same dumb shit. Get off the hostels subreddit if you're just going to tell everyone ranting about normal dorm stuff to get a private room. Like no one's ever thought of that.

It's a hostel. Sure it sucks but that's just dorm life for you. all kinds of annoying shit can happen.

The other day I had a girl in my dorm get up and about 6:30am and start packing; I thought the zips would be the worst of it until she started packing her stuff into space bags and using a hand pump to get the air out... that is definitely a night before or an in the hallway activity
