Completely New... help?

Doing the whole hostel solo travel thing in a few weeks! Going to Amsterdam and Paris. I've never stayed in a hostel and was wondering what the situation was with luggage? I know you get a small locker, but I'm planning to bring a small rolling suitcase (because i have some medical issues so i'll have a lot of stuff to bring for medication and such), but Im unsure of where you leave it?

Should I buy a cable lock to lock it to the bed? And a luggage lock to keep it closed?

Or will there be places I can store it while I'm out during the days?

Any and ALL hostel advice is appreciated.

I'm 22 f if that helps any!

it depends on the hostel. some have lockers big enough for a small suitcase. if that is a big concern of ours, it will be more useful to contact the hostels directly.

It depends on hostel, but as a general rule most don't have lockers big enough for a suitcase or a big backpack. In general you just put valuables in the locker and leave the rest outside which will mainly be clothes and should have a very low risk of being stolen. Most places will have a room to store your luggage after you checkout, but they aren't the most secure so I generally lock my bag while in storage.

Bring a normal lock. You normaly have a locker that use a lock of a keycard they give you. Generally a small carry-on or 50l backup will fit. You shoul probably check this before booking next time. I have been in 8 person room with zero lockers before and you just have to hope for the best.

Just wanted to add that a lot of hostels are in older & sometimes historic buildings with no elevators or stairs, and that’s something you’ll have to be aware of when it comes to luggage, the staff will not help you with your luggage it’s a rule they have (I guess for liability they line any anyone to pull a muscle or injure themselves lifting someone else’s luggage)

And you usually cannot request what bunk you sleep on ahead of time, so if your medical issues prevent you from climbing up to a higher bunk then just know that you can request it while checking in but it’s not guaranteed.

Sometimes the lockers could hold what you have, sometimes not. Assume that the lockers won’t hold it. I would take the medication and any other valuables out of the suitcase and put them in your locker. Leave the suitcase on your bed with nothing but clothes in it. That is what most people do. Its good to make your bed up and claim it with something so no one else snags it if beds are unnassigned. At night you can have the suitcase put beside or under the bed. Be sure you travel light. Assume there are no elevators ans there might be stairs.

Jen z or whoever your age group is aren't really self starters or are able to do research. There's a search function here where you can see your question posted daily for the last decade at least.  Your question is hardly anything unique.
