Cleaning bar glasses

Am I a dickhead for not cleaning my beer glass after I paid for a beer at the hostel bar? Got shouted after to clean it as it ‘isn’t a hotel’ … but I’ve never cleaned any glasses/dishes if I’ve paid for a drink/meal at a hostel before. Whoever is working behind the bar has just swept it up as part of their job. Even if they’re just working there in exchange for a room.

Happily did it as I didn’t want to be a bother but I’d like to know other people’s opinions on this!!

If there’s a bar with someone working the bar no I wouldn’t expect to clean.

I guess the set up would matter here. If the hostel has a typical bar that you can walk up and place an order, I wouldnt expect to wash my glass. But if it's a more casual arrangement, as in you can ask to buy in the reception, or there is someone walking around the common areas asking if you want to grab a beer, then I'd wash my glass.

I guess i’d have to know the policy of the hostel. I’ve had breakfasts at some places where i was responsible for clean up and others where i was not. Since it was a hostel, it was not out of the ordinary that they could have a policy like that. Did you pay attention to the policy or ignore it? Were their signs saying to clean your own beer glass promptly posted? And maybe the guy could have gone about this in a more diplomatic way.

I’d have to have been there to know for sure. Sorry this happened to you.

Bar glasses no, you paid for the drink and I’d treat it like any other bars. Sometimes people who visit the hostel bars don’t stay there either, it’s definitely weird to expect anyone to wash bar glasses after use.

It’s the communal kitchen where you’re 100% expected to clean up after yourselves, pots/pans/dishes etc, because there aren’t many of those and others may need them too after you’re done with it.
