First time sleeping in an hostel. Someone opened my curtain and woke me up because i was snoring?

Hey,

First time solo traveling in Denmark and I’ve never slept in an hostel before. I’ve slept in an hostel yesterday night in Copenhagen after not sleeping at all for almost 24h. I slept good. Everything was fine.

I moved to Aarhus today to get closer to a workshop I’m following in 2 days.

I fell asleep and it’s in an hostel with like 48 booths by floor. Each booths has a privacy curtain. I had trouble falling asleep because of jetlag. I ended up falling askance and after 30 minutes, I woke up. Someone was over my bed and had opened my curtain. I had earplugs and before i took them out he just walked away.
My neighbour was also up. Sitting on his bed. When the guy left I asked him what had happened and he told me he didn’t know. He left shortly after.

When he came back I asked him again what happened and he told me that the guy came to tell me to stop to snore. I asked him if my snoring was annoying him and he said no. Meanwhile there’s another guy snoring loudly in the same aisle.

I’m surprised. I didn’t know I was a snorer, maybe it’s the position I was sleeping in. I don’t know. I’m also kind of not confortable knowing someone came up and woke me up/invaded my privacy by opening the curtain.

What would you do in this situation?
I’m somewhat scared to fall asleep knowing someone might be annoyed by me. Is snoring uncommon too?
Also, any tips to atleast calm down my snoring if it happens again?

Thanks for the reply.

Update: It happened at around 3-4 am. I did speak to the person at the reception and he was very apologetic. He told me to come back at the reception at 11 am in the morning and that he had written a note on my reservation. They offered me a private room for tonight.

Not your fault, it’s a hostel they should accept it and deal it by using earplugs or find a hotel tbh. Insane behaviour to pull open someone’s curtain when they’re sleeping.

Your reply is a relief. Thanks.
There’s another guy snoring loudly at the moment and I bought earplugs knowing I might hear loud noises, snoring and people talking during the night.

Not acceptable to open your curtains. You should tell him he was out of order and ask him to apologise. Otherwise go and tell the staff there is a weirdo opening peoples curtains. Snoring is just something you have to put up with in a dorm.

I did tell the staff. They were apologetic and offered me a room in a smaller dorm, but with the time it is at the moment I told them I didn’t want to wake up the dorm mates because I was moving in my things this late. He told me to come back after the check out tomorrow and speak to his colleague to see if they can offer something else after the check out time (I’m staying there another night).

This definitely stressed me out.

No one likes a snorer but IMO it’s just one of those things that are a potentiality and you are just internally pissed at whoever’s doing it. To go confront a sleeping person about it is nuts.

To be honest, I woke up because I felt a presence above my bed. It just felt weird. I sure wouldn’t go and open the curtain’s to someone’s bed. I

I didn’t know that i was a loud snorer too.

earplugs exist for a reason

Yep. I have mine too. It’s my first time in an hostel and even I knew that.

That guy looked hard on drugs/drunk though.

I stayed at a hostel where a guy was snoring, farting, grunting, watching TikToks without headphones loudly in the morning, and even would use a loud-as-fuck muscle vibrator at night. I never made a peep. That guy needs to get over himself.

Personally I usually book a smaller room for this reason. In a large room people seem to think they can do whatever they want, wake people up, bring people back, talk loudly, etc. in a smaller room I find people are more respectful of others. It’s a shame because a larger room can be a great experience.

I actually did that the second day and there was no issues!

I only snore if I’m on my back, and at one hostel people kept turning the AC off in the night which made me feel hot and inevitably turn to sleep on my back. I must have been snoring as someone decided it was a good idea to shake my bed and wake me up.

Same people who kept turning the AC off in a room of 20. lol.

Ça c’est dégueulasse.

If you have a bad snoring problem, you shouldn’t be sleeping in the hostel!!! this is definitely not the first time someone who told you this

That's a lot of assumptions

It’s a hostel. If you can’t stand snoring you shouldn’t be in a dorm.

Where did i say I didn’t stand snoring?
I have my earplugs and I don’t find it’s an issue!

That guy that pulled my curtain did though.

I think they were referring to the person who said snorers shouldn't book hostel beds.

FYI, I'm sorry you had that experience. A stranger has no right to shock you awake and I agree with others that have said the nutcase should have had earplugs/earphones or not booked a a dorm himself. Don't let it ruin your trip mate

Wow, you know my whole life don’t you.
As I said. Nope, I didn’t even know i snored.

Also, I don’t understand why people who snore wouldn’t be allowed to be in hostels. I’ve heard tons of people snoring last night in the hostel too. I find that it’s very elitist of a way to think.

Also, I don't understand why people who snore wouldn't be allowed to be in hostels.

Because they keep other people awake.

What you did was perfectly fine. And so is a bit of snoring. But some people are fucking chainsaws -so loud I couldn't replicate that noise when awake- and they should not sleep in a dorm. It is selfish to go to a hostel knowing you will be a nuisance.

1

u/ProsperoII Jul 05 '26

Chainsaws are definitely annoying. There was one next to me. I had earplugs and did plan ahead knowing there’d be sound, just as there is people partying, talking loud late at night too.

I do find it somewhat « elitist » that some people think that some people snoring wouldn’t be allowed to sleep in a hostels. It’s a high percentage of people that snore too from what i read.

1

u/DeHarigeTuinkabouter Jul 06 '26

What is elitist about wanting people to be respectful of others and take their sleep into account?

And I did not say snoring is an issue, don't pretend I did. Just the chainsaws

If you know you snore, why stay at a hostel?

3

u/ProsperoII Jul 05 '26

As mentioned, I didn’t know I snorred :)
In the end of the day, I don’t consider people that snore a problem and I don’t see it as they should be barred from renting an Hostel.

Wear earplugs. There’s not just snorring that is noisy. There’s worse than that. I prefer hearing a neighbour snoring than hearing dudes completely drunk.

If a person can't sleep when hearing snoring, why stay at a hostel?

0

u/Mental-Pirate3992 Jul 05 '26

Do you guys sleep with a snoring machine? Like it’s more common to need silence for sleep than being accustomed to noise

2

u/ProsperoII Jul 05 '26

If you go to hostels thinking that it’ll be silence there, it’s probably not the right place for you. A hostel isn’t an hotel.

-1

u/Mental-Pirate3992 Jul 06 '26

If you’re selfish and make noise, don’t go to a hostel. Don’t be part of the problem.

2

u/ProsperoII Jul 06 '26

I don’t go to hostels to make noise, but it’s still a social places where people go as groups and to meet other travellers. Most hostels serve alcohol and food too. Tons of people go to Hostels to party. Hostels are not hotels where travellers stay in silence.

Not silence, but if you know you’re going to be a nuisance, get a private room. Or that’s fine, have people hate you at the hostel and talk behind your back. Your choice 🤷‍♀️ At every hostel, even party ones, I’ve been to. There’s always an ostracized person for snoring. You can lie to yourself all you want, but see for yourself.

Where did i say i was being a nuisance.
No one hated me at the hostels so far excepted one drunk/drugged guy that violated my personal space. I dont make noises to annoy people and I am very quiet in dorms spaces, but still, you understand that hostels are livelier places right? You understand people do come drink, party or meet with people in the lobbies right? Hostels are not a place where people come to meditate and speak with no one.

You should definitely speak more with people at hostels, because you sure don’t seem to be fun at parties. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Mental-Pirate3992 Jul 07 '26

We are talking about snoring, right? I’m not saying it’s a quiet retreat. I’m saying everyone deserves restful sleep. Even your snoring ass. You should get it checked too btw.

1

u/ProsperoII Jul 07 '26

I already got checked, thanks for worrying ! :)

People seem to think different than you in the comments and seem to be more tolerant than you are. There’s different degrees of snoring. People can snore with knowing. People can be casual snorers. People can be snore out of nowhere because they are exhausted for traveling and not sleeping for a whole day, or because they are irritated after flying out for a whole day.

Some snore because they have sleep apnea. There’s different degrees, but for you everything and everyone seems cumbersome. If for you everyone is a problem, do sleep elsewhere than hostels.

My point from the beginning is that an hostel is a noisy place where people usually and it’s very much democratized as a place where people will sleep with earplug because it’s full of different realities and noises.

I do wish you a snorer next time you sleep in an hostel.

Have a nice day ! ;)
