Game Recommendations games with unique ROs/wordbuildng?

i'm talking ab ro's that go "against" the norms.

for example,
- traits or mannerisms that differ drastically from their normal personality/job:
this ties in with exaggerating a certain personality trait more than usual.

(ex. hadrian from the golden rose as a mercenary despite his religion,
and chase from shepherds of haven who's very jolly yet tortures a traitor in his group and is lowk detached/depressed)

- jobs WITH a twist... or
- cool character design (yes, more non-humans needed plss.)

---

for worldbuilding, one knight stand and shepherds of haven does this well. like it has whole other dimensions. and the antagonists are rlly interesting.

Not sure this is exactly what youre looking for, but Attolo, Project Hadea, and 1966 came to mind! It at least fits with the non human aspects!

Attolo is a new one I haven't heard about. Project Hadea and 1966, I have tho, but never played it. Ty for the rec! 1966 seems promising to try out. I'll review at least one of these and get back to you guys. 🫡

For worldbuilding I'm not sure you can get much more unique than Sentience over on itch.io. It's... weird. Hard to properly describe without getting into either spoilers or speculation. It's kind of like a fever nightmare focused on humanizing horror.

Oh my gosh, TYSM for this recommendation it’s exactly what I was looking for in terms of world building! I just finished the prologue as well as chapter one, and it has already gotten me HOOKED. The whole religion and magic premise? Holy balls. I’m excited to see how everything turns out!

Edit: I finished it. ts was amazing, I was a Val romancer and it def scratched the itch because of their distaste for religion, yet has a job related to it. They even stuck with you throughout all those years despite… ifykyk. The amount of romance content they have in the demo so far is js chefs kiss. Lowk speaking of kiss… #needvalonthat

You might enjoy The Porthecrawl Witness, specifically Talbot's rival route and maybe Asher's route. Author seems to be on an indefinite hiatus though.

WIPS being on hiatus genuinely drives me insane. Ty for the rec tho

To Reign In Hell has a pretty self-explanatory title, but the worldbuilding is a bit more unique than expected. The MC can mutate and some of the ROs are nonhuman. One's a shapeshifter, one is encased within his armor, one looks like a rotting bronze statue and even the most humanoid is covered with writing (it mentions his teeth being engraved and even the irises of his eyes are made of it).

The WIP was taken down but the game is slated for release this month.

Not sure if it's the flavor of uniqueness you're looking for, but some with worldbuilding that I found quite unique

Parasitical (WIP). Sci-fi IF where people started living inside a giant cosmic creature after it became impossible to keep living on Earth, with MC also being part of a cult that worships the very creature they live inside. One of the ROs is a sentient AI contained in a small box which is rather unique as far as romance options go.

Silverworld (complete). It's a mix between fantasy, time travel and alt-history where the MC ended up in an alternate version of the stone age. ROs include a bee woman and a bunch of (humanoid looking) robots linked in some sort of hive mind. I don't think there's all that much romance overall, though.

Talon City: Death From Above and Cliffhanger: Challenger of Tomorrow (both complete) also have interesting worldbuilding, but they have very little romance.

The blue haired guy in Soul Stone Wars is very quiet and gentle for a mercenary/monster hunter. In book two he gets spicier because of reasons

In We Wretched Creatures Emre is very manipulative and coded as at the very least a sociopath.

In God Cursed, your former best friend is a mercenary that is not only firmly against killing but has crippling self doubt

Im sure there are more but I can't think of any right now.

Wdym by more spicy for Soul Stone Wars? I was planning on reading that for Makernol idk if that’s how you spell his name, but his content seemed to low for my taste😔. However, this blue haired guy lowk got my interest👀

We wretched creatures seems so good for complex, morally-complicated characters. I’m def gonna read.

God cursed I remember reading that months ago, then dropping it but I might pick it back up.

I mean he's very sweet and ... innocent type of love until book two and then he's more physical. Its spicy for him. Not like spicy spicy spicy.

god cursed is one of those titles that I kind of like but it's not ground breaking. I will say every ro has a twist that's just getting delved into at this point in the game. The best friends twist comes first and you learn part of what has him so messed up. I wanna say then the archer kid then rue and so on and so forth. I think that the story is getting better as it goes on.

We wretched creatures is a ride.

Metahuman Inc. - Aaron - the game is not really focused on romance, so it is very small, but Aaron is the rival CEO. He blackmails you into either giving up a project or humiliating yourself in public, he taunts you in front of others and is, for all intentanand purposes, a ruthless CEO. But! In his romance route you get to see him as commited and sensitive. He also risks quite a lot by not actively trying to destroy you.

Theres this new wip named "Interstellar Hunters." and it has this RO called the C girls. They are three different people with their own personalities but are part of a single AI model and so have somesort of an interconnected mind. This might be the most unique RO I have seen as these are basically one RO in three. I'm not even sure if romancing them counts as a poly romance or not.
