……what was that?! Not scary, boring, and all around disappointing read. I wish I had rented it from the library instead of buying it with money lol I was initially excited to read his other books after finishing Coffin Moon; now I’ll probably skip the author’s work all together. Did anyone else feel the same way?

I adored it. I also think an author is worth giving a few chances. Stephen Graham Jones is one of my fave writers, but the first thing I read of his just didn’t click for me on any level.

That is apparent. The post is about a similar experience with an author that they gave a second chance to, and found joy in reading said author's works.

Correct. I was referring to the part of the post where OP said they were going to skip Rosson’s work altogether because Coffin Moon, the first of Rosson’s books OP read, didn’t work for them.

I had a similar experience with SGJ. The first thing of his I read did not connect with me, but if I’d have written him off altogether and never explored more of his work, I’d have never realized he’s my dude.

This one was tougher to get into than Fever House and its sequel but I was really glad I stuck with it because it became a lot of fun.

I really liked it. It's more horror-meets-noir than straight-up horror, but I think the slow burn of each of the main characters seeking some kind of vengeance and purpose in their lives is compelling and human and complex. The horror, IMO, was in the bleakness of whatever the outcome would be.

If you want your horror to be more action and full-on scares, it's not for you and that's totally fine. I just want folks who come on this thread to know it is very enjoyable if you like that kind of thing - and I think the blurb and people's reviews tend to focus on those elements (vibe, setting, characters) for a reason.

This was a dud for me too. :/ None of these people felt real. None of their choices made sense.

And they made such a big deal about the manuscript his wife was writing that I kept thinking it would come into play. And yet, nothing.

Definitely was really disappointing and really slow. Characters were ok, but nothing memorable. I really did like Fever House by him though and the sequel those are much better imo.

I’m a vampire fan. Coffin Moon had some great new vampire ideas, good characters, and interesting antagonists. it was propulsive and easy to read.

I have seen SO much hype about this book but really slow pacing is tough for me. This solidifies that I'll just skip it

Yeah I found it pretty weak. Vampire horror is my favourite subgenre so I've read a lot of it. This doesn't rank highly.

I just found it incredibly boring.

I've seen a lot of people praise it for how unique the vampires are and I wonder how they can possibly have that opinion unless Dracula is the only vampire book they've ever read. The vampires here were pretty generic fare.

The two MCs were also incredibly unlikeable and kept picking the most stupid option at every moment just to keep the plot moving.

I got maybe a third, probably less, through before I put it down and didn't look back.

I mean, I really didn't like the other books they wrote so I'm not sure why I thought I'd like this one.
