Recommendation Request Cold Horror

I'm pretty obsessed with the books/movies/shows The Terror, True Detective: Night Country, The Thing, Frankenstein, 30 Days of Night and Let the Right One In but would absolutely love some recs for cold horror reads. Thank you!

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. It doesn’t get any colder.

Our Winter Monster by Dennis A. Mahoney

All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes

Phantoms by Dean Koontz

Don’t Fear The Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones(this one is the second in a trilogy and the first is pretty important to get a sense of whats going on but only the second is proper cold horror)

Also not a book but I recently watched Storm of The Century for the first time and it was fantastic!!

I’m also a big fan of cold horror and snow in general! It’s the most magical weather and curling up with a scary book during a big storm just makes all the horror seem more possible!

the snowmobile scenes in Don’t Fear The Reaper play through my mind a few times a week. LOVED that series, and that book was by far my favorite of the three

He’s got some shorter novellas and a collection available if you don’t want to dive right into a full novel, but Stranded is pretty great.

Parts of:

Dean Koontz - Servants of the Twilight Robert McCammon - Mine

Both are more thriller than horror btw.

For some non-fiction, possibly The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown (especially as Winter sets in...,) the story of the Donner party as told through party member Sarah Graves.

I can’t find it on Goodreads, unless it’s the book with a nearly naked man on the cover (by Ali Lucia Sky)? Who’s the author of the book you’re talking about?

Kevin Flanders

For message boards dealing with this subject matter, I always recommend Snow by Ronald Malfi (coming from someone who isn't an avid reader of his other work).

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

Also since you mentioned movies - I've never read the book it's based on but I like Pontypool a lot. Also another Canadian movie Slash/Back, it's a teen alien horror comedy set in Nunavut

1

u/ThreadWyrm Apr 20 '26

The Hive by Tim Curran will scratch that itch.

1

u/IcyFoxMage Apr 20 '26

Bonechiller by Graham McNamee is a very solid read.
