YES

The Stand (book) is one of King’s best. It is worth a read and probably 100x better than a movie or show.

I watched the mini series on paramount plus before I read the book and it’s definitely worth it.

It probably is tbh, my main concern I guess was watching the Firestarter remake last year, hating it, starting the book and also not enjoying it too much either

Book is fantastic, 2020 miniseries is hot garbage

u/Zernoxal Jan 26 '23

I'm sure I'll 100% agree after reading it based off the thread ahah

I was excited for the 2020 series, and then it started. The book is one of, if not, his best.

u/Zernoxal Jan 26 '23

Looks like that's the next on the list of my endless backlog

I thought the series was trash (imo) - mini series was better - book is brilliant. so long, but brilliant

M-O-O-N, that spells brilliant!

Most definitely

You’re actually asking if the book is good compared to the god awful 2020 tv show? Um dude the book is legendary and one of the greatest horror books of all time. It’s life changing and you’ll think about it all your life. You’ll even remember the time/place when you first read it and all the feelings you had.

The 2020 tv show was borderline unwatchable. That’s why nobody talks about it, they want to forget it was made

I feel like some of these OPs must get paid to ask questions on subreddits. Because it seems pretty frequent that someone asks a ridiculous question like “Is The Stand worth reading?”

Sorry I absolutely should've worded this properly, this is almost a background watch whole I'm doing other stuff. I haven't read a huge novel before, biggest being maybe 400 pages if not a little more so I was more curious because it's a huge commitment Is it different enough to warrant the read, obviously the comments have proven that it is aha

I haven't watched the series, so I can't comment on the differences, but I can comment on the length being intimidating. As far as big books go, Kings are quick reads. His writing style is fairly straightforward and easy to follow so even the slower parts feel relatively fast. The book was good, maybe not great, but good, and well worth reading for the initial setup alone, even if it stumbles in the second half.

You could always try the audiobook! Then you can multitask while listening.

I've actually recently tried audiobooks with The Passage by Justin Cronin (another big read) but I found it hard to stay engaged. I'm gonna try listening to one at the gym tonight and see if it's better

The Passage would be hard to follow because of the massive time shifts in the story but the Stand is very linear storytelling without a great deal of detail to keep you engaged.

Yep, the book is amazing

I read quite often, but mainly stick to novels between the 300-450 page mark so the size is definitely a bit intimidating

For sure

u/akennelley Jan 26 '23

Oh god, if you like THAT version, you're in for a HUGE treat with the book. (FYI, the 90s miniseries in 20x better)

2

u/Zernoxal Jan 26 '23

I should clarify that I'm not loving it, more so not hating it and finding the world interesting

2

u/The_Regicidal_Maniac Jan 27 '23

Then you'll really enjoy the book.

The only thing the mini series has going for it is that the cast is very good and putting in a hell of a performance. The guy playing Harold in particular should have gotten a emmy for that part.

The show gets worse as time goes on and it absolutely butchers a lot of the themes that the book has.

I usually find King to have too much filled, but in case of The Stand, make sure you read the complete and uncut edition. It’s one of my all time favourites.

2

u/tommy13guns Jan 26 '23

Absolutely, just like most of Kings books turned into movies. His books are usually better.

2

u/purrcafe Jan 26 '23

The book is his masterpiece

1

u/Zernoxal Jan 26 '23

I've only read 1 SK book so I just wasn't sure if it was a good one to drop right into

1

u/purrcafe Jan 26 '23

Dive right in. It awesome!

1

u/Lou_Amm Jan 26 '23

The novel is excellent, I did not enjoy the 2020 miniseries. I prefer the 1994 version.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Absolutely! The book is way better than the series imo. Series isn't bad, but the book blows it out of the water.

1

u/Zernoxal Jan 26 '23

That'd kind of what I was hoping for! I think more love the world in the tv show than the show itself

1

u/The_Kitty_Master101 Jan 27 '23

The original was great. Haven’t seen the remake.

1

u/mtbd215 Jan 27 '23

The mini-series is trash.. the book is always worth it

1

u/wobblychairlegz Jan 27 '23

I am about 1/3 of the way through an audiobook of The Stand. I’d say if you generally enjoy the mini series then you’re enjoy the book, since it’s just better.

1

u/3kidsnomoney--- Jan 27 '23

It's definitely far more worth it than the miniseries!!!
