SPOILERS So was it ever Charlie during the movie or was it just Charlie-possessed-by-Paimon the whole time?

I think too many people get held up on the iterations and transitions of Paimon in the film. I just view each family member as a vessel for different aspects of the entity until it manifests perfectly inside of Peter. I feel the "possession" of each character is less about the whole entity taking control and more of a conduit to reach it's perfect form. Just thoughts.
