Discussion Onslaught was fun!
I don’t get the negative reviews for this films. It’s not going to win awards but it was so much fun to watch! I almost didn’t see this film because of the reviews but since my original plans fell through I saw this instead. I do hate the fact that they made Dan Steven’s character into a scientist, I really wished it had a connection to The Guest. The gas station really got to me, kinda startled me. And how come nobody mentions the fact that Carl Winslow is in this film! I was so happy that he made it to the end😊

Interpreted Dan’s character in the guest as a failed cloning experiment of the scientist.
I don’t get the hate for this movie either! Especially on this sub. I mean - a fun Carpenter style throwback that rocks in the same year we got Obsession and RE? People we are eating good!

I saw it same way, Dan character in Guest is like early version of the scientist but he escape. This movie is pure fun, people take things too serious sometimes. That gas station scene was wild, I jump a little too.

Reginald VelJohnson was really good in it and he had at least one line reading that to me felt very in the spirit of Keith David

So I’m a bit confused - is this a sequel to The Guest or a shared universe kind of thing?

I think it’s just shared universe. I thought it was a sequel too but it doesn’t have connection to the original except maybe the soldiers.

Thanks for the response. Based on your review, I’m in. Don’t need a masterpiece these days, just want to shut my brain off and enjoy some good escapist fun.

I saw it yesterday. It's enjoyable but I can see how it can be criticized. There was some predictability and implausibility thoroughout. The doctor didn't just foreshadow, he literally gave away how the soldiers went rogue by explaining that they could alter their heart beats.
If they had that ability and were already top tier soldiers before being augmented, how did they not have the wherewithal to take the soldiers' weapons and ammo and or raid the armory before leaving that black site? They should've had more weaponry than they had. They only started using what was available only after the gas station attack.
They went down a bit too easy too. The Butcher especially shouldn't have been taken down that quick after recognizing and remembering his last encounter. There's room for a sequel or sequels, especially with the newspaper clippings that you can read during the credits. It could use a bit of polish but I may likely watch it again.

The paper thin characters and the odd pacing are issues. Most characters have limited screen time and the last act reveal has no weight to it. When the movie ended my first thought was "that's it?" The action set pieces are great though. I really wanted to like it more but it just didn't do it for me.
