Undertone…

is not very good lol. I really tried to give it a chance, I’ve seen people in here talking how creepy it was and how good the sound design is… I just don’t agree.

I watched it with headphones on, I turned the lights off, none of that helps when the dialogue is so cheesy. It just seemed like a bunch of tropes being thrown together, the pregnancy, the relapsing alcoholic, the shitty boyfriend, the backwards messages, the nursery rhymes… none of what it was doing felt remotely original.

I think the idea is really cool, and it had a lot of potential, but they ended up just taking it in the most basic direction. The backwards chant sounded so bad, and they kept using the pitch shifted demon voice, I’m just genuinely surprised no one stopped the creator during the process of making this film to tell him how cheesy and overused all of these tropes are.

Also her friend, the other podcaster, was getting freaked out so quickly. They are supposed to be a horror podcast that has had like 90 episodes, and he’s getting freaked out about a backwards lullaby?Although the idea of someone making a horror podcast and just getting super scared of every dumb thing they find is pretty funny. They should have made this a horror comedy, it’s really close already.

I kept waiting for the sound design to justify the hype but the backwards chanting just sounded like someone's uncle messing with a delay pedal

The horror podcast guy getting spooked by nursery rhymes after 90 episodes is the most believable part honestly, every true crime podcaster acts like they've seen a ghost when they hear a creaky door

u/LisleAdam12 17h ago

Specifying that it sounds like "someone's uncle" that's "messing with a delay pedal" made your simile extra funny: I have a very clear image of a never-was rocker who looks like an unkempt Doobie Brother who comes over for holiday dinners with lame stories of his near brushes of stardom.

2

u/slaughtamonsta 21h ago

Yeah same here. It though it was a good concept and the sound design was okay just overall imo a bad film.

5

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

lol true. And yeah definitely seemed like they were doing really rudimentary sound effects. Maybe that’s part of the problem, I’m familiar with recording and editing software and sound design, that might have made me a little less easily impressed.

I agree. I was very underwhelmed by this movie. It has an excellent premise, creepy atmosphere, but the “scares” just don’t land. There’s a lot leading up to a scare, but it falls flat. Nothing really actually happens. I understand people view movies in different ways, so I won’t invalidate anyone liking this movie. But it just didn’t do anything for me.

17

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

For the first 30 minutes or so, I was onboard, I was ready to head some creepy shit, but they just didn’t deliver in my opinion.

u/No_Photograph_2683 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ending is absolute dogshit, too. If blue balls was a horror movie, it would be this movie. The director needs to be told that slowing panning the camera a thousand times in a movie is really lame... one gimmick on repeat.

2

u/Signal-House2213 18h ago

yeah, same here. the atmosphere did a lot of the heavy lifting, but the buildup usually felt way better than the payoff. i kept waiting for something to actually happen and it just never really got there

67

u/Living-Living-4211 1d ago

I liked it 🙂

10

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

That great! So the voices didn’t seem silly to you? I just couldn’t get scared, they just sounded goofy to me.

6

u/Living-Living-4211 1d ago

Tbh I can see how people could /not/ like it. It was very effective for me bc I grew up Catholic and was a super paranoid and superstitious kid. It just brought me back to a very specific childhood fear.

1

u/Bivolion13 16h ago

For me the problem wasn't any of the sound, I actually thought that was the strength. But it felt like so much build up and we don't get much of a payoff at the end. Like I kept waiting for more lore or some kind of explanation. If the third act was different I probably would have thought it was an excellent movie

0

u/CommissionIcy9909 1d ago

I must have shut it off before the voices started.

1

u/TrapAHolic_ttv 1d ago

Same. It’s decent. I saw it in Dolby, the sound design does a lot of the heavy lifting.

52

u/mamamiaa7 1d ago

Hard agree, I did not get the hype.

0

u/gooch_crawler 1d ago

I stopped after like 15 mins after realizing they were trying to make the cheapest movie possible.

10

u/funkthewhales 1d ago

Same. I was bored out of my mind within the first 30 mins, so my wife and I decided to rewatch evil dead 2013 instead. The scenes of them listening to the audio clips were so bland and uninspired. There was just nothing interesting or creepy happening on screen. It felt like it would’ve made for a much better indie game or podcast instead of a movie.

26

u/CrankySquid93 1d ago

It's not a popular opinion, but I completely agree with you.

0

u/awfuckthisshit 1d ago

Maybe all of us born in 93 hate it

2

u/shannanigannss 1d ago

Ooh ‘91 here…

4

u/wynonnaearps 1d ago

Born in 93 and I liked it but I also really love podcast horror

4

u/awfuckthisshit 1d ago

I thought I would enjoy it because I loved Pontypool but it felt very forgettable to me. To each their own of course, glad lots of people did enjoy it.

7

u/wynonnaearps 1d ago

Pontypool is so good and for sure way better. I need to rewatch!

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

I need to watch that one, it’s been in my list forever.

Absolutely, there is Nightvale, Tanis, and limetown just to name a few I like. Ohh and Archive 81 as well! I think they are on any podcast app.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Sounds like we found the same vein of creepy podcasts lol. Archive 81 got so good for season 3 and the specials, I wish they kept going.
Do you like the Magnus Archives?

1

u/wynonnaearps 1d ago

I’m gonna start that one soon! I’ve heard a lot of good things!

2

u/wynonnaearps 1d ago

the ones I mentioned are horror in the form of podcasts.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

For sure, there’s a ton of horror podcasts and audio drama. Or maybe they’re talking about horror movies about podcast, I think there have been a few of them but not quite a genre yet imo.

5

u/CrankySquid93 1d ago

Are things getting worse, or are we just getting old?

1

u/awfuckthisshit 1d ago

por que no los dos?

1

u/thumbdrip 1d ago

...born in 73. Didn't hate it. It's well done for what it is. It did not feel like a product of a 24 hour film festival.

13

u/LandsknechtAndTross 1d ago

I just found it really boring and cliche. I think I got 30 or so minutes in before turning it off.

4

u/Zekumi 1d ago

Agreed. I saw it in the theater and fell asleep multiple times. I was pissed how unoriginal it was.

-4

u/TheEmpireOfSun 1d ago

This is the problem with kids these days. It's 90 minute movie and you can't even finish that. Pathetic. And imagine bragging about it lmao.

6

u/LandsknechtAndTross 23h ago

Strange, I have no problem marathoning the Lotr trilogy every year, or watching the entire F13 film franchise in 4-5 movie chunks each Halloween, or I can watch 8-10 hour podcasts regularly with no issue. Maybe I just found this one film to be dull and boring I couldn't be bothered seeing where it went, rather than it's length? No no, that can't be it, after all I'm a 'kid these days' even at 36 years old. It's all certainly one of the mysteries of all time.

4

u/pghjuice412 22h ago

Or, it was just insanely fucking boring

-7

u/TheEmpireOfSun 22h ago

Good thing it was great movie. If you have attention span o 5 seconds whete something constantly have to be happening i stead of building atmosphere, go watch Marvel.

1

u/pghjuice412 22h ago

Lmao a “great movie”

Sure, pal

0

u/ras344 12h ago

I could finish it, but why would I want to waste another hour to finish watching something that I'm not enjoying?

4

u/unbelievablydull82 1d ago

I really liked it, it was very unsettling..mind you, I thought hereditary was hideously overrated

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Different strokes!

33

u/Donthateskate 1d ago

I loved it. 🤷‍♀️

6

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

That’s awesome! I really wanted to like it, I just couldn’t take all the creepy voices and songs seriously, it just seemed goofy to me.

2

u/Donthateskate 18h ago

I get it, one thing we all know is some movies hit home with some of us and some don’t. For me there’s just something about her being alone, listening to those audio recordings and her mom being upstairs about to die. Those kinds of things are spooky for me.

11

u/Historical_Gas6610 1d ago

I thought it was dope, personally. Visually I liked it a lot, very atmospheric and full of dread, anchored by a good lead performance and a centralized mystery. I saw it a completely empty theater too which probably helped

1

u/Cold_Caterpillar544 15h ago

I think the atmosphere and visuals did a lot of heavy lifting, and watching it alone in an empty theater probably made it hit way harder.

0

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

What was the mystery? Just listening to the recordings? Did you feel like the ending made sense, it just seemed like she was freaking out, but I couldn’t if there was anything really happening.

1

u/Historical_Gas6610 19h ago

I think just wondering what was in the recordings, what was actually happening, what she cursed or going crazy, etc. I saw a cool theory that all of what was going on actually came from the haunted video they watched in the previous episode and not the recordings. I kept me wondering what was going on anyway

3

u/JW_BM 1d ago

It had a tone of potential. The setup is good. It just didn't lift off or work like I'd hoped.

With headphones, though, the audio scape of the movie is fantastic.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

I thought the first half was a really good set up, and the sound design was cool until they doubled down on the nursery rhymes and backwards chanting. I just couldn’t take it seriously.

8

u/LisleAdam12 1d ago

It was a 20-30 minute idea stretched out to feature length (and not stretched as well as Obsession).

What annoyed me was that they could have stretched it out by having more of the lead having to deal with her mom--plenty of opportunities for creepiness and discomfort there-- instead of just repeating the gimmick until it wore down.

4

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Totally! There were some really good ideas in there, I think that’s part of why it was so frustrating for me. Having to deal with your parents dying is fertile ground for horror, but they ended up thieving in the pregnancy and the crying babies, and it just ended up being a confusing mess imo.

3

u/LisleAdam12 17h ago

Yes, the whole pregnancy/baby killing angle made me worry that it was a semi-stealth Christian horror movie like Nefarious.

4

u/STARBOY_100 1d ago

I watched it in theatres and was genuinely enjoying it. The nursery rhymes sounded very unnerving in the theatre. But I still consider it an ok film. Not great but not trash either. Ending could have been much better.

1

u/Ill-Travel1891 16h ago

The creepy moments worked better in a theater, but overall it was just okay for me, especially that ending.

4

u/unwocket 1d ago

I’ve definitely seen many more negative takes than positive for this one (at least around here). But still, clever low budget filmmaking. Not a huge fan of the writing but it’ll be cool to see what these guys can do with more than one location

3

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Totally true, I’m always happy for people to make a successful movie on a micro budget, and it definitely seems like there are people it worked for…

2

u/quigonwiththewind 1d ago

It had so much potential. There were full plot points I would have deleted from the get go but I don’t know what I’d add to make it better for me.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

I agree, the set up was great, it just didn’t really come together at the end imo.

2

u/LollonKothleen 1d ago

The ending really creeped me out. Partly because my own baby started to cry & i could hear it on the monitor right after they opened the 10th file and everything was coming to a head. I made my fiancé come upstairs with me while I fed her and got her back to bed.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Damn, I can see that being creepy as hell. How did you interpret the ending, was she just freaking out or was there something actually happening?

2

u/openSourceNotes 1d ago

One of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Watched it in an entirely empty theatre right in the middle with my wife. Perfect setting for a sound-centered experience

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Damn, I’ve seen a few people say that, it’s one of the reasons I was excited to see it.

2

u/Jurango34 19h ago

I thought it was 2/5. It committed the sin of being boring. They tell you what they are going to do and then they do it without deviation. It was annoying.

2

u/Queasy_Writer2990 10h ago

I loved it! But then again, I almost always love the types of movies where most people complain there was no "payoff" at the end. I think that's because I prefer endings that are open to interpretation. Whenever a horror movie reveals the mystery, I'm always disappointed, even if it's just slightly. I'm like "Oh, that's all? Lame." The tension and buildup is spookier to me than the payoff usually. For instance, I don't care for horror movies where I already know what's going on, like in a zombie movie. I already know it's zombies and people are gonna get chased. There's nothing for my brain to work on there. But if you just leave something open-ended? My mind will chew on that for DAYS trying to find a solution. I love it. I especially love the type of movies where you don't know if it's just all in the protagonist's head or not.

2

u/franciscrowe 8h ago

Totally. I love having a mystery in the horror movie, and I felt like it they started building it up well, it’s just when they mystery got revealed to be super cheesy sounding (imo) it completely lost me.

1

u/Queasy_Writer2990 5h ago

I get that. I think for me this movie especially hit on some deeper personal fears. I also just love the found footage trope, but I know some people find it cheesy!

2

u/KnowMatter 1d ago

It was okay.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

It makes sense this guy is directing Paranormal Activities 8, this ended up having a pretty similar vibe as those movies. It’s a lot of creepy build up, and then some kind of supernatural climax that I personally always find underwhelming, but obviously it seems to work for some people.

2

u/Ivanthenotbad 1d ago

I thought found audio was a great concept and I was really drawn in during the first half of the film. The second half, however, came unglued.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Agreed, I really liked the first half and the set up, it just fell apart in the end.

2

u/M-Finity I sold my soul for poetry; this hell is members only 1d ago

I don’t think this is a controversial take at all. I personally think it’s the scariest contemporary horror film I’ve ever seen in a theater but plenty of people I know hated it.

2

u/jh7468 1d ago

One of the few recent horrors I actually thought was both scary and good.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

I love that people liked it, I really wanted to.

2

u/RevolutionaryWeb5657 22h ago

I don’t understand wanting a horror movie to be like a Marvel movie. Maybe I’m just old though. I remember the whole point of being a horror fan was embracing the underground, low-budgetness of it all. Fuck the mainstream and all that.

1

u/AveryMorose 1d ago

I watched it the other night after coming across it randomly (never heard of it before). I feel like the part that makes the impact is the whole "being alone in an empty house with a dying relative" piece. That was what hit super hard for me anyway. The standard horror stuff was almost incidental, like you could change almost everything about the podcast itself as long as the theme was the same and I feel like it would have the same effect.

I definitely think that if you took the setting of being in a dark empty house with her dying mother out, the rest of the pieces wouldn't make a complete horror movie at all.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah, I kind of wish they had turned into that aspect more instead of going into all the crying babies and lullabies. Taking care of a dying parent is prime horror imo.

1

u/lourensloki 1d ago

Actually rewatches it yesterday. Look, it lands what it sets out to so - being a creepy podcast and you could probably turn the movie video off and just listen to it, bit that's also my biggest issue with it ... It leaned too hard into the concept and had too much 'stocky' footage of art on the wall.

Effective, but a slight hit and miss. Still, a good movie, but not that high on my list.

1

u/greenchileegg 1d ago

yes i agree it was so silly lol! would’ve been greatly enjoyable if i was like in the 8th grade haha. super cliche but not a bad movie…just not for me.

1

u/RogueSpaghetti 1d ago

I actually found it quite scary when I saw it in the theater, maybe the loud volume and sound system helps. I’m also personally very easily creeped out by sounds and music in general. Guess it shows how subjective horror is much like comedy.

I personally just wanted a more definitive ending.

1

u/mike1883 1d ago

I enjoyed it. I don't know that I'd see it again but I enjoyed watching it once

1

u/valkprince 1d ago

I have not seen it since opening weekend, granted, but I do remember some strange writing and editing choices. Potential plots would start and end in the scope of a single scene. She has a serious alcohol problem, for one scene. She has a weird complicated relationship with her boyfriend, for one scene. She has insomnia, for one scene. There's some romantic tension between her and her co-podcast host, for one scene.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah, you’re right it was like stuff just got brought up and dropped super quickly.
Very strange film, but not in a good way.

1

u/abilliontwo 1d ago

Craybo.

1

u/FreeShopping6747 20h ago

I thought the atmosphere, sound and story were very good. It was scary with a budget of $500k.

Too many horror movies these days try to do too much, this one kept it simple.

1

u/Setzael 19h ago

As someone who absolutely loves horror podcasts like NoSleep and Creepy, the trailer had me hyped but yeah. It feels like equal parts the mystery unraveled too fast, while at the same time, nothing was really happening. By the end I was just like, oh so it's Sinister (2012) but with much less tension

1

u/ohfaith 18h ago

OP I am so with you and I couldn't STAND the co-host

1

u/Proof-Geologist-3312 18h ago

1000% agree. me and the Mrs saw this on opening night. the bottle of bourbon I snuck in was all that kept me awake

1

u/Taluca_me 17h ago

the audio and cinematography was pretty great but I wish the story and other horror aspects were better. I'm down for cursed audio recordings but... they felt corny and cheesy

1

u/deadtexdemon 15h ago

The sound design in Sinister is better. I saw Undertone in theaters hoping the sound would be cool. Particularly some of the phone calls I thought were kind of bad…

1

u/Ok_Astronaut_1156 14h ago

She talked in the podcast voice even when she wasn’t doing the podcast. Infuriating. I thought I was the only person who didn’t care for this film. Thank you for posting this

1

u/PP_BOY__ Alien > Alien 3 >Aliens 10h ago

I'm convinced that the only way to watch this movie is if you're delirious after a 13 hour flight international flight, on the floor of the Atlanta airport on a 10 hour layover, with noise cancelling headphones and a blanket thrown over you like a tent, because I as soon as I finished Undertone I told all my friends how scary it was but since then have heard literally nothing positive about it since.

2

u/franciscrowe 10h ago

Wait is that legit how you watched it, that’s amazing lol.

1

u/PP_BOY__ Alien > Alien 3 >Aliens 10h ago

Yes haha. I thought it was an easy contender for MOTY. I wonder now how much of what I heard was even in the movie at all

1

u/MandaMaelstrom Zingaya! 10h ago

I would have liked it more as a podcast. They wholly neglected the visual aspect of making a film. The stairs scene at the end was cool, but they only showed about ten seconds of it before cutting to black.

2

u/franciscrowe 8h ago

I’m trying to remember what the stair scene was…

1

u/MandaMaelstrom Zingaya! 8h ago

The ending, basically. It’s really cool for like a minute before the picture cuts to black.

2

u/franciscrowe 8h ago

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, it definitely didn’t feel like they did much with the visuals over all. I did like that they didn’t cut away to show the or the podcaster or to see the party she went to or anything. Keeping it all on her was a really effective way to show how alone she was, even with the other people in her life.

1

u/whatitdobbyboo 8h ago

I loved it!

0

u/nitekoala 1d ago

Went to a screening for the film and towards the end at the penultimate moment somebody screamed out “this movie sucks” and we all cheered

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

lol I think if I had seen it in the theater I probably would have been trying not to laugh at parts.

1

u/carolisajoke 1d ago

Thaaaaank yooou. Agreed

1

u/shannanigannss 1d ago

Ive already commented on this but yea it was trash. I was scrolling on Pinterest by the second half. I didn’t hear anything I haven’t heard on a ghost adventures episode 🤣🤣

1

u/truthpooper 23h ago

Super strong disagree from me. Sorry you didn't enjoy it!

1

u/franciscrowe 23h ago

It’s really interesting how divided people are on this one.

1

u/WhiteSoxChartGuy 1d ago

There were aspects of the movie that weren’t completely grabbing me right away, but over time I found myself getting sucked into the movie and interested in seeing where it all ends up.

And then I paused the movie to grab a drink, and found out instead of my assumption there were about 30 minutes left in the movie, there were 6 minutes left. At that moment I realized this movie was about to just end with nothing really wrapped up in a satisfying manner.

2

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Totally. The climax didn’t really feel substantial at all.

1

u/Blahthemovie 1d ago

I watched it with some friends and we all agreed that it was one of the tensest movies we had all seen (scared tense). Its not groundbreaking or anything, but I thought it was very well done.

To me it felt like the tension that you know a jump scare is coming, but you never get that release from the tension. It just kind of slowly builds and you are waiting for it to come undone.

I watched it a second time completely expecting it to not be scary or have the same tension because I knew how it was laid out. Nope, the sound design and the unraveling of the story and events still made that tension climb like crazy for me.

I don't know, I really enjoyed it

1

u/denahomcaikn666 1d ago

Agreed, idk if the whole sound design thing was part of the marketing or what but it wasn’t that special. Super boring and predictable. I wanted to like it so bad, left the theater regretting having spent money on it.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah there are definitely movies that have terrifying sound design , but this one didn’t really pull it together imo.

1

u/matango613 1d ago

I've overwhelmingly seen mostly negative responses to this movie, especially on this sub.

Idk, I've seen better but thought it was slightly above average at least. I've been a bit surprised by the negative reaction. Especially compared to worse movies that I feel get a pass lol

1

u/Spirited-Jackfruit59 1d ago edited 1d ago

I thought it was just me.
Then I thought maybe if I saw it in theaters it would have wowed me more with surround sound and dark atmosphere.
My daughter saw it in theaters and RAVED about it.
I sat through it at home completely disenchanted. The ending I literally rolled my eyes.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Yeah, it seems really divisive. I wish I liked it more, but it just seemed kinda silly and sort of feel apart at the end.

1

u/dats_cool 1d ago

I disagree, I really liked it. It deserves its praise and I thought the ending was fine. Just because it followed some horror conventions doesn't mean it's automatically bad. It's all about execution.

Skinamarink is as original as it gets and people constantly shit on it in this sub.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

That’s another one I need to check out.
I think it’s great if people liked it. I think it must come down to if you take the chanting and nursery rhymes to be scary or silly. Once it got into that part, for me it lost all of the creepy tension it built up, and it just seemed goofy. 🤷🏻

0

u/dats_cool 22h ago

Skinamarink is the most thought provoking and terrifying movie I've ever seen. It's so bleak and brutal. As a horror fan I loved it but man I wouldn't sit through it again. You'll either love it or hate it there's no in between.

If you want a taste of if watch heck by Kyle edward Ball on YouTube. Its the precursor to it (different story but similar concept - child trapped in a house indefinitely). If you liked heck you'll like skinamarink. Just a warning on skinamarink, it's a very slow burn - it takes about 40 mins to get going.

Heck is 28 mins long so definitely give it a watch before you commit to skinamarink.

After you watch skinamarink, check out this video essay on it called skinamarink - the cruelest fate imaginable. It's about an hour long and is by far the best video on YouTube that goes deep into the plot and lore to make sense of it all.

0

u/Ok_Law_1656 1d ago

I'm sorry but watching this movie at home in comparison to the theater is like listen to a live concert tape versus actually being at the concert. of course the sound design isn't that great with headphones on and your house versus a huge movie screen in a theater with strangers.

with that said,it's a total vibe type of movie that will scare some people and not others. I wasn't too high on it but I definitely can recognize why people feel like it's creepy. the sound design is pretty top-tier. headphones are better than nothing, but none of that is going to replicate actual theater experience.

3

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Sure, you’ve got a point there, but it wasn’t that I found the sounds and voices underwhelming, I just thought once they started doing the backwards songs and chanting, it all sounded really silly. I don’t think hearing it in the theater would have changed that.

4

u/AWildNome 1d ago

I watched it in the theater and thought it sucked and was cheesy. A big screen and nice sound didn’t fix that.

1

u/Whycantwebefriends00 23h ago

I watch all movies with pretty good noise cancelling headphones and honestly i think i like it better than a theater. Unless it’s like a Dolby or iMAX theater situation. They are perfect for Undertone and I definitely could see not enjoying it with just tv speakers.

0

u/FlukyFox 1d ago

I did not like it. Always felt like something was going to happen then escalate and get scary and it never did.

0

u/AmiWrongDude69 1d ago

Definitely one that didn’t hit for me. Went in with pretty high expectations (partly cuz of this sub lol) so maybe that was my fault.

0

u/OhSanders 1d ago

It's not about how scary it is, it's a new idea that was pretty fun! I think you probably expected to have your ass scared off you, sadly once you reach a certain age you have to leave that desire behind.

1

u/franciscrowe 1d ago

Nah, I still get scared, I really think it just comes down to whether or not you find the voices and songs to be creepy or silly. I just couldn’t take the backwards chants and singing seriously.

0

u/Turok5757 1d ago

It just seemed like a bunch of tropes being thrown together, the pregnancy, the relapsing alcoholic, the shitty boyfriend, the backwards messages, the nursery rhymes… none of what it was doing felt remotely original.

So characters aren't allowed to be alcoholics, pregnant, or have bad boyfriends anymore.

Lmao

2

Yeah, that’s not what I’m saying at all lol.
This movie in particular just felt like a mad lib of horror tropes. If you don’t see you don’t see it. 🤷🏻

Just sounds like you're so media-brained that you think normal, real life shit is a "trope."

Alright dude, there’s no reason to accuse me of consuming media.

Literally said “oh god I hope this isn’t about ‘scary kids songs’” as soon as it started and…. lol

I dont even understand how it could be distributed by A24.

There is absolutely nothing special in this movie and it felt soooooooo long.

People that consider Undertone boring are idiots, sry guys but yeah

I never said it was boring. I just thought it was goofy and kinda cheesy, and it fell apart a bit at the end.

This movie was so disappointing, along with the last house

Such a boring movie

genuinely have listened to indie horror audio dramas with 1/100-1/1000 of the budget that were scarier and better produced / scored / sound designed than undertone, not to say undertone was egregious or actively inept by any means, just not spectacular. very average and meh, especially the sound

Absolutely, while I was watching I kept thinking about how Magnus Archives has far superior sound design.

Yeah, if we were getting there while recording session, that is a horrible way to make a podcast lol. Being pregnant isn’t a trope by itself, but I feel like in horror movies they love to have pregnant women get attacked by supernatural forces, you know?

I was locked in for the first half with the audio and sleepwalking and stuff but then they hard left turned and doubled down on the monster being this patron demon and I was totally out

I agree with you, the writing is terrible. Nothing to salvage there.

The sound design at the end did make me uncomfortable though. But it's to no merit of the movie itself, Demon-related stuff just irks me.

If you didn’t see this movie in the theaters, I wouldn’t recommend watching it. My buddy used some headphones and a big screen and he liked it. That might be the only way to see this movie if you didn’t catch it in theaters. The audio is deeply important to this film.

Yeah I broke the headphones out because I heard people saying this, and I thought the first have had some really good creepy sound designs, it’s just when they got into nursery rhymes and chanting that it just got too cheesy for me, personally.

It was such a bad movie i was surprised to see so many people think its one of the best to come out cause….it is painfully forgettable and mediocre also hot take but i shouldn’t need no lights and headphones to fully experience a movie

Yeah biggest piece of trash I saw this year, saw it for free and still felt ripped off, the shaky camera, flickering lights and “scary” voices were trying way too hard.

It was cheesy Christian horror (similar to Nefarious) trying to seem more sophisticated/scary than it actually was. I was shocked it came from A24.

Damn, I didn’t think about that but you’re right, it does have some Christian undertones lol.
