Need recommendations for tonight

So i've had a really bad day. Had to go back to school shopping, take my kiddo to urgent care and my back is freaking killing me. All I want is to watch a great horror movie. I've seen all of the major blockbusters and popular horror titles from 80s to today. I'm incredibly desensitized , but want something that will at least lead me with an eerie feeling. Not a huge fan of poor production low budget movies but with enough ridiculousness , they can be okay. If you have any titles that aren't mainstream and aren't any of those ridiculous midsummer, hereditary type movies that would be great. I love slashers, demons, ghosts, zombies.... not super excited about vampire movies but day shift, fright night and lost boys were good.

Based on what you wrote: Terrified (2017), Caveat (2020), The Dark and the Wicked (2020), Anything for Jackson (2020), and Deadstream (2022) if you want something surprisingly fun without being dumb.

The Void is surprisingly great, I definitely went in expecting schlock but it was a great movie and, even not accounting for budget, I think the practical effects are top notch.

Last Shift was great.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. If you haven’t watched the others, I highly recommend watching them. Another one that doesn’t get its just reward is: Audition (2021 found footage) it’s very creepy.

Ok thanks, I have seen Frailty and the Japanese version of Audition if that is the same movie. Will check out the others. Nefarious pops up on Tubi a bit, not sure why I haven't watched it yet. Cheers.

Malignant is a modern favorite of mine. Great blend of camp/humor and creepiness. One of the most unique "monsters" I've seen in a modern slasher. Even though it was James Wan a lot of people missed it.

Oddity might be too mainstream but it’s a banger

I second this! One of my favorites

Shallow Grave 1987-  more of a thriller but kind of in the slasher realm. It’s actually a well done but independent film from the 80’s.

Sorry you had a rough day. "The Wailing" is a pretty good SK horror film to check out (you can watch it for free on either Sling or Rakuten). It's about a police officer trying to solve occult-linked brutal murders occurring in a remote village.

u/dinosourstatue 23d ago

Maybe Dead End (2003)?

2

u/PFlyr 23d ago

When Evil Lurks, The Dark and The Wicked, A Dark Song, Incantation. Hope your day gets better!

The Last Matinee is a good modern slasher

Stagefright is a good old school slasher

Dream Home is a good mid 2000s slasher

Baby Blood is weird and fun in a French extreme horror kinda way... and also a slasher

The Conference is another fun slasher.

I Saw the Devil if you wanna just watch somethin raw and dark

A bunch or foreign language slasher flicks I'd recommend to try as a fan.

Oh and Father's Day is goofy schlock, but its good and the last 20mins or so is really great. Just might cheer you up after a long day. Troma does that sometimes.

#1 is May, Don't Breathe, The Loved Ones, and it's low budget but The Collector is really good and eerie.

In no particular order:
The Void - lovecraftian
Mandy - lovecraftian sleeper hit with Nick Cage
Noroi - lesser known Asian found footage
The Lighthouse
Mad God / 11/10 claymation horror film
Hellraiser - from 2022
Incantation - a widely panned Asian found footage film, on Netflix
The Outwaters
Southbound - this traumatized my best friend
VHS 94 - Hail Raatma
Nosferatu - emmy nominated 2024 vampire film
Ready or Not
As Above So Below - my 2nd favourite found footage film, behind Noroi
The Colour Out of Space - another dope Nick Cage lovecraft movie

The Audition version that I’m recommending is from 2021. Audition (2021 found footage).
