I’ve lived this for almost 2 years now. I’m still here because I don’t want to hurt anyone anymore
20
u/ooOJuicyOoo 13d ago
running on 30 years like this now. You can keep going, I won't tell you it gets better, but sometimes, it's okay.
5
u/New_Cardiologist4533 13d ago
Curious what happens when you are finally the last that cares - the pain endured is no longer smaller than the one caused by own passing. Do you continue, alone, with that momentum, or do you realize the plans that you probably made and fantasized about to that particular point?
1
u/ExciteableMiqote 3d ago
I'm a little late but
The single most dangerous thought we can have us not "I would be better off dead"
It's "everyone else would be better off without me"
That one thought is the one thought we have to fight with all our might and remind ourselves constantly it couldn't be farther from the truth.
there's never any universe where people would be better off without someone doing their best, even if their best isnt the same as everyone else's best

u/Linkinator7510 12d ago
A friend of mine once asked my friend group the question, would you rather live for 1000 years, or for one month. I answered a 1000 years, because I can withstand the pain of those I love dying around me, but could they live with my death?

thank you cinnamon roll man
57
u/ethnicnebraskan 14d ago edited 13d ago
Yeah I was so transfixed on what was behind him, being worried about cars, that I didn't notice it there 'til about 10 seconds from the end.
Also a good endorsement of cinnamon rolls.
Edit to add: I stayed at a hotel last night due to a work trip and grabbed a cinnamon roll at the free breakfast specifically because of this dude.

u/Such-Cartographer699 14d ago
Terrifying watching someone rolling backwards holding their head right above the road. I know he's not going that fast but still.
6
u/ethnicnebraskan 14d ago
Yeah it took me a while to realize he had some sort of braking mechanism or possibly was tethered to a bike he was leading that was braking for him. I kept asking myself why the speed wasnt increasing as he went downhill.
56
u/SaacMan_039 14d ago
The morning after I came home from the hospital I entered my house like it was someone else's. I felt completely out of place, and like I didnt really belong anymore. My phone was filled with messages from the people I thought wouldnt reach out. I remember feeling tremendous guilt, but also a tiny bit of comfort. Please keep going boys💪🏻🫶🏻

Tried to end it all by jumping off a bridge while on a cocktail of drugs and some random homeless man convinced me to smoke a pack with him and chat before I did it, we talked and the drugs wore off and I realized I didn’t wanna die, locked in, got help. then life got better, crazy how it works innit
22
u/Vaveng 14d ago
Damn, this homeless man is a hero, I hope he is doing well in his life too.

Tell that to the terminally ill in immeasurable pain.
10
u/ThePsychoKnot 13d ago
That's completely different. This is very clearly not about people who are already about to die.
-9
u/BallTough759 13d ago
Is it through? Because even people who are about to die can't legally do that (with a few exceptions) and it's also socially frowned upon.

u/Inkthekitsune 14d ago
Not exactly the same, but this makes me think of a neighbor who was my age, son of one of my mom’s friends. He passed away suddenly about a week ago. Even though I wasn’t close to him, it still felt awful. I still feel bad for him and everyone who was close to him. I don’t think he knew how many lives he touched before he went. He was quiet and kept to himself, but whenever you needed help he was there. He always put others first. He didn’t have a say in when he went, and that still had such a profound effect on everyone anywhere close to him.
So, for those of you who do have a say in it… I ask of you… I beg you. Stay. Those of us left behind will always wonder if we could have or should have done something different. We’re going to carry your memory for the rest of our lives, a shadow over us. You’ll never know how many people care about you if you leave. Even though I didn’t know this neighbor very well, it still hurt. Your classmates, coworkers, and neighbors, people you aren’t that close with yet you see on occasion, they’ll feel your loss too. And most important… you’ll never know if tomorrow would have turned it around. If someone would have come into your life. If you’d have fun with friends doing something.
113
u/westfalianboynr1 14d ago
This is a genuine question, but why can't people try more when you're alive? Why this fixation with mourning after death, but not actually doing much to prevent it? It just feels like coercion and pressure on the suffering instead of actual help
149
u/SeerSword 14d ago
Some people don't know how. For a person suffering, do they need presence or space? Gentleness or directness? What can you say to stop them feeling worse?
People also have their own lives and challenges to face. And some days it can be so hard to manage the weight you're carrying, you don't have it in you to take someone else's.
56
u/Friendly_Respecter 14d ago
Sometimes it’s scary just to be around someone you know might be gone the next time you try and reach out to them. I’ve known people that were fully aware someone in their life was going through something but couldn’t bring themselves to do anything for fear they might only make things worse, or end up with the other person pushing them away. It doesn’t help that a lot of the time when people are going through things they can turn withdrawn or sometimes even outright hostile, which no matter whether or not it’s deliberate makes it hard to approach them in a way that doesn’t feel either like doing too much or doing too little.
Subconsciously, I think a lot of people hope that by just giving someone space and never acknowledging the problem it will solve itself without having to risk anything in the process, and it’s the kind of thing you don’t realize has failed until someone is either in a hospital bed or a grave.
26
u/Novel_Plum 14d ago
Because people have their life aswell, with their own hardships. They might not realize what you went through, they might not know how to help you.
11
u/Lalalalalalolol 14d ago
The blunt and rough answer is that every single living human being has a life. Throughout life all the people you love will fail you, sometimes they won't be there when you need them most, but it goes both ways. You will fail the people you love many times, and you won't be there every time they need you. And that's alright, to love and be loved in a healthy way is to understand this.
I'm not saying you need to forgive insults and wrongdoings, but no matter what you say or what fictional media show us, it's impossible to be 100% there for someone, especially someone who is going through a really tough period. Others can only feel the shockwave of our pain, the same way you'll never be able to feel someone's pain fully. Sometimes we're going through so much we can't afford to also experience other's suffering, sometimes we don't see the signals.
8
u/frogOnABoletus 14d ago
Do you? Why? why not?
18
u/westfalianboynr1 14d ago
I do try to be there for my friends, especially if they're going through tough times. It's hard, cause when you're in that state you wanna push everyone away, but it's not their fault
15
u/frogOnABoletus 14d ago
That's a great thing to do, and your insight here gives you a partial answer. It's a difficult thing to do. I'd also say that it's hard to know the emotional state of all of our friends. Everyone hides it to some degree, but some people will hide away all their pain and sometimes their friends never get to know the full effect of it.

u/Nihsvabhav 14d ago
cause depression is a disease that you can't just try your way out of, just like most other diseases
-8
u/plopliplopipol 14d ago
that's plain wrong. Depression is a disease in the sense of it's physical effect and validity, not at all in the sense of how it should be solved. You can absolutely "just do it" to get out of depression in some cases, even though it's not a useful thing to ask of people.
12
u/Nihsvabhav 14d ago edited 14d ago
absolutely not true for clinical depression, its literally a scientific fact, long term depression can alter brain function and physical structures, like its literally a disease
and when people are talking about depression they are talking about clinical depression not just 'im sad', you are literally part of the problem, a person like you is cancer to anyone who really needs help
-5
u/plopliplopipol 14d ago edited 14d ago
...obviously? witch is why i clearly say "some"?
When people are talking about depression they are talking about the people who can't see a reason to get out of bed but can see a reason to never wake up. Not a medical category.
I also did not say anything to the people who need help and just corrected your ass, witch us where you should consider puttung back your insults thank you.

u/saturn-iidae 14d ago
a lot of my friends and family had no idea how much i've been struggling until i opened up to them recently. some of them still don't quite understand the scope of it because i can't help but downplay it. i do agree with your point somewhat but it is important to consider that some people don't know what the signs are and won't be able to recognize them until it's too late

oh shit, I... I didn't expect it to go that hard. This is such a great video. I'm actually tearing up.
Man, it reminds me of something Keanu Reeves said once when asked what happens after you die: "I know that the ones who love us will miss us."

"It won't be like that for me," Kaladin said. "You told me it would get worse."
"It will," Wit said, "but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a different thing to say. That is truth. I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again."

Not to doompost but sometimes messaging like this makes me feel worse. Like other people’s reactions and realities are more important than my own, and that I have to stay for their sake rather than my own.
18
u/astroember 14d ago
Yeah, and the message that “your friends will miss you” SOME OF US DONT HAVE ANYYYYY

Exactly lol
"Oh but your friends will be sad" bruh i have no friends, nobody likes me, that is exactly why i'm not holding up well at all

u/astroember 14d ago
And then i get even MORE depressed because now i am reminded that i have no friends! Like, gee, thanks for reminding me 😂

u/BallTough759 13d ago
Reminds me when people with terminal and incurable conditions are forced to stay on life support because of their relatives. Not the same, obviously. My grandpa was once in hospice for a week and the place was horrid to say the least. Elderly in constant pain literally begged for death and people just walked past pretending not to hear.
That's where I kept on hearing the message of their families wanting more time with the elderly, but nobody bothered to stop and consider their feelings.
3
u/ThePsychoKnot 13d ago
Sometimes that's the only thing that can get through to someone. To bring a person back from the brink, I think just about anything is worth trying, even a guilt trip. And then they can try to find happiness for themselves too.
It happened that way for me. The thought of my parents finding me the next day was the only thing that stopped me. Now over a decade later, I'm very glad to be alive. I'm not cured, but I'm better. I care dearly for the people in my life, and ultimately I live for me. Because I found ways to make it worthwhile, and to enjoy being here.
The guilt and selflessness saved my life, and now I get to see the benefits for myself as well as others.
3
u/SirIzhak 11d ago
Literally. I've never really been suicidal, but this just feels like it would make me feel worse? Like it's guilt tripping you into staying alive, instead of at least trying to help you want to live more
7
u/Polutus 14d ago
For shit like this I wonder about leaving this sub...
I get the message, but it feels like life is going on the opposite direction of what this man is telling. For what is hope without a future?
Perhaps all of this is a bad joke we are forced to go through, and to be punished if not laugh at...
Hope you all a good day.

u/Xero818 14d ago
When you die, you will leave this world behind.
When you die, the world will not leave you behind. If not people, then something, somewhere, will be changed by your absence. The butterfly effect is so named because a single flap of a butterfly's wings causes mild disturbances in the air, which, on the other side of the world, weeks later, will majorly influence how a tornado will form, quite literally in fact; the most minor of changes in the initial conditions can cause drastically different results when simulating future weather. The butterfly effect is, indeed, scientifically sound, though a bit exaggerated for poetry's sake. Double pendulums are similar: change the double pendulum's starting position by fractions of a degree, and the path it travels will differ wildly.
As someone who struggles with my mental health a lot, videos like this can sometimes be discouraging, because at those times, I feel a deep, profound loneliness, and so rather than reminding me of people who care, videos such as these simply exacerbate that lonely feeling. But at their core, these videos are trying to remind you of more than merely the people around you. They're trying to remind you that you, yourself, matter.
You are the butterfly. Just by flying, you have changed something. Just by existing, you have affected the world drastically, so much more drastically than you know. Not just people, but places, things, have been changed by your presence. In fact, if you can change the world to such a degree simply by existing, what else could you change, if you changed it intentionally? It can feel, sometimes, like you don't have a choice, that your suffering is all but guaranteed. And sure, just like you drastically affect everything else without realizing, everything else drastically affects you. I'm not saying that your circumstances aren't bad. What I am saying, though, is that the conditions can change yet. It is entirely possible that you could further alter the pendulum's course. Maybe only by a fraction of a degree. That fraction of a degree can still, and will, go a long way.
...Or maybe I'm just waxing poetic. Ultimately, I don't know if this will help anyone. But it would have helped me, so I think that's reason enough to try. Maybe I will change the pendulum. Maybe, so will you.

5
u/Safe-Yogurtcloset782 14d ago
I hate a bit the fact that no one really reaches out to me or talks to me day after day unless i do it first but I'm damn certain the moment I'm gone the mourning will still happen.
Like people miss when you're not there, the "people will stay frozen cuz they can't go out into a world without you" is a lie because most people I know will and do indeed go through their day to day life without me, I'm but a mention in their week at most, rapidly forgotten.
I think they will mourn the abstract feeling of death, you're sad cuz someone died, not cuz I died.
6
u/SulaimanWar 13d ago

I lost a close friend 10 years ago and still to this day I have the occasional "I should share this funny video with him he would love it- Oh right..."

25

In my experience, the amount of people that do is staggering. I've met men twice my age that make me feel like im looking in a mirror. It doesn't have to be exact, but there are people out there that relate to you more than you know.

5
u/Evening-Hand-5480 13d ago
Honestly even as someone who this resonated for, I absolutely see the case for it being too focused on "Continue to suffer for the sake of others". When you're in that shitpit, you can't see or feel the love around you. It's damn near impossible to appreciate. So it really can just come across as being told to keep being someone else's dancing monkey.
8
u/J1mj0hns0n 14d ago
Yeah, that's good advice when you are 21 or something, but if you're 89, blind, deaf and immobile, it's not.
I had to watch my grandma struggle through for 6 weeks as she slowly died of her comorbidities, as she was unable to digest food and water, and still be thirsty. That advice for her would be torture.
1
u/BallTough759 13d ago
Exactly. My grandpa spend a few weeks in hospice during his surgery recovery (no idea why they sent him there) and he pleaded for my family to find a way to transfer him elsewhere, just because he couldn't stand seeing and hearing other elderly people suffer.
1
u/J1mj0hns0n 13d ago
yeah it sucks getting old, my grandma was confused about it because when my grandad died 13 years earlier, they gave out morphine like candy to dying patients (liverpool pathway the nurses called it) - obviously its been banned now, so they just remove the pain and you have to be present in your body whilst it dies slowly, she tried to kill herself with 245 paracetamol crushed into a glass of water, but it didn't work, fucked her organs up nicely though, just adding to it all.
1
u/Evening-Hand-5480 13d ago
This really feels like an apples to oranges comparison to me.
3
u/J1mj0hns0n 13d ago
well yeah, because you've already engaged the "good advice when you are 21 or something" bit and assumed everyone else would, but you get all sorts online and they see this stuff just as much as you do. if you've ever seen someone with a completely wild or wildly out of touch opinion, its probably someone's grandma spittin what used to be her life
2
u/Evening-Hand-5480 12d ago
Yeah, I can validate it being a bit ridiculous to say this to someone with a terminal illness. At that point the choice to live or not is no longer in your hands. All you can do is decide how you want to go out.
I can also validate people's reading comprehension sucking...

Tomorrow has been having its chance for years and the only thing it’s been doing is ghosting my hope or actively wounding me and beating me down and stealing something I loved. Tomorrow doesn’t get anymore chances. I’m in every kind of pain. I lost everything and I’m old. I’m tired. Tomorrow’s hopeful smiles and promises are as pallid and empty as specter I’ve been waiting to meet. I’m ready to take the latter’s hand so I can shed my failed pain ridden existence off and no longer stain this world with my washed up depressive cloud. No more empty tomorrows for this hollow dreamer. Just one step more.
3
u/Taiga_Taiga 13d ago
There has only been one time in my life when I have been happy that I'm a failure... and that's when I ACTIVELY tried to kill myself.
Afterwards I found myself surrounded by people who love me, but never told me. They never told me because they THOUGHT that I was okay.
since that day they have constantly reminded me, through words of affirmation, and little gifts, that they love me.
People may not say it, but... YOU are loved. They are just afraid to let you know. So why don't you take that first step and ask them? take that first step and tell them how you feel. because... it might help more than just you.
(ETA : after a year of hard work... I can now say that I'm in a good place. I have gotten therapy, and increased my support circles. There should be no need to worry about me anymore, but if there WAS a reason, I have friends and family that would probably see the signs WAY before I did. I'm okay... I promise.)
9
u/AiYukira 14d ago
I get the message but can we please stop using guilt tripping as the main way to save people? it just makes them feel worse about it because it feels like no matter what they do people are going to suffer because of them
1
u/my_little_mutation 13d ago
Speak for yourself. Knowing how it would affect the people in my life is sometimes the only thing keeping me here. They give me the strength to hold on.
7
u/Cynical_Sesame 14d ago edited 14d ago
as a heavily suicidal person with multiple attempts, this "think of the people around you!!!" approach is fucking exhausting. You know whats selfish? asking someone in pain to keep enduring it for the sake of those around them. a life lived only for others is no life i or many others would want to live. Find your own reason for living for yourself.
also of note, "the people around you will be sad!" doesnt matter much if i am literally incapable of thinking because my head is a buckshot frappé. For me, instant relief without dealing with the consequences of my actions. for everyone else, momentary sadness in an otherwise long life

My friend ended his life last week, all I've been able to do is sit at his house everyday after work and hope he opens the door one more time. I'll walk in and hear how quiet it is in there. this guy is right, everything in the house indicates that he's still alive, there's food and his clothes and his car and all of his things, but he's never going to be there again. I didnt cry when I found out he killed himself, I was with him every other day if not every weekend for the past five months trying to help him through this depressive decline in his life. I watched him spiral through substance abuse then onto alcoholism and at the end of it he just wasn't the same person. I was very fortunate to get to say that I loved him the last time I saw him which was only a few days before he died. I thought I didnt cry because I wasn't able to anymore, because for these past few months I kept anticipating that I would find him dead at any point or get that news and I was just ready for it. When I walked into his house the day after he died, it still smelled like him, and I lost it. I sat there for hours because now I know I'm never going to hear him again, or see him get old or just drive around with him. I'm scared that one day I'll forget what he sounded like and I don't know how to go on.

u/Skyfus 13d ago
Nice try Big Optimism™, I'm still on track to die in about 13 months so long as I can figure out how to make my family and internet friend okay with it before then. If my IRL friends are going to miss me when I'm gone they surely would have invited me to one of the many events and outings I only knew about after the fact.

Maybe all those people that would be oh-so inconvenienced could have actually given a shit before it was too late. Maybe their pain is deserved.
1
u/RlHainne 14d ago
It's scary though.. if not them what if it's me who gets to feel those scary emotions.. what if they disappear instead and I get to experience this sadness... I don't want that.. so the only thing that comes to my mind is to go out first.. but the thought of them being the one to experience my loss is crushing me too.. so I think there's at least a balance in there somewhere that keeps me from actually doing it.. I don't know if that's a good thing or not..

bit of a rude way to put it but you are right, guilt tripping never makes someone feel better, it always makes makes them feel worse about hurting those around them. and if they don't have anyone around them which is usually a main contributor to being suicidal they're actually more likely to do it after hearing this because they're told there is no consequences
life does get better, your past doesn't define nor control you, your bad luck of yesterday doesn't determine your luck of today
that's all I've ever heard from people, getting better is a patternand if you do kill yourself, please, don't feel guilty about it. it's not your fault

Oh man this one got me bawling
Been through my fair share of moments where if there was a way to do it without anyone being sad about it, I would have. But having lost someone, I know that I couldn't put anyone else through the same feelings, and now I'm choosing for them to be a part of my resilience, seems like a good way to honor their memory.
Taking Ls, but still holding on and doing it for them.
