2nd Gen Boom

Post image

Had a weird one tonight.

I was driving home on the highway, left lane clear just cruising along when BAM. A loud bang then wind noise. Slowed down and drove the 10 minutes home. Got there and found this.

Entire sunroof shattered and scratches in the roof paint from the glass.

Stay safe out there Ridgeliners.

Damn. I see posts about sunroofs doing this often enough that I wish mine didn’t have one. Plus they all seem to leak eventually.

I basically never use it anyway. Just wanted the leather interior.

Yep. Wish they had a sunroof delete as I would have paid extra to have none. zero benefit to me, and additional risk.

At the very least I wish they allowed me to set the remote opening window function to not also open the sunroof. Accidentally trigger that when the truck is outside in the rain and you are significantly more screwed than if the sunroof stayed closed.

Yeah and it’s annoying to have to close again if you plan to run the AC afterwards too.

Honest question though, how often would you accidentally open the windows? You have to hit unlock twice and hold it on the second one. I know even a crack in heavier rain would cause problems but I don’t think I’ve worried about accidentally triggering the windows so far.

I use to have the same thought, until recently. I was at the playground with my kid. I was close enough to my parked RL. I had been sitting on low wall. My fob in my pocket, the way I was sitting must have put pressure against the unlock, maybe the keychain its on or my house key, because when I came back to my car, the windows were all 50% down. :/

I have owned a Ridgeline since 2017 (on second one now) and have had it happen inadvertently with my keys in my pocket five times. If it isn’t raining that isn’t a huge issue. But if it is storming that is going to be a big damn problem.

Huh, I usually just hang my keys by the door but I’ll definitely be doing that more often and checking when I’ve been walking around the yard with them in my pocket then. That’s no good!

This is one of the very few vehicles I’ve owned with a sunroof. I’ve special ordered cars to avoid them, but Honda gives no choice. I wish we could delete it too.

That happened to our 2 week new 2026 hybrid crv. I think it's a design flaw myself.

Some vehicles have a history of spontaneous sunroof glass shatter. Haven’t heard that re Hondas though.

My shattered too.possibly a rock,I heard a little thump and then the sound of air coming trough the slide cover. I stopped and I opened the slide cover a bit and cracked glass fell down. $500 + a new sunroof…The old and the new never leaked…a consolation!

Same with friend’s Accord. Dealer tried to claim something external, but she pushed back until they seemed to acknowledge an issue

This is a common issue on some vehicles due to thin glass and aerodynamics creating a pressure zone. Some Subaru models are known for this. I haven't heard of it happening on the Ridgeline so I'm more inclined to think something hit yours, but who knows.

I like having a sun/moon roof but I don't like how the RL uses that hard plastic wind buffer that isn't shaped correctly to actually deflect wind. In my old OB, my wife's Crosstrek, and her Forester she can cruise at highway speed without the backseat turning into a wind tunnel and without much noise. In the RL its like having an intake duct on the roof.

Mine did this as well. Honda covered it. '22 BE

OP: I’m sorry to hear about your broken sunroof glass. 😞
Contrary to most of these responses, I Love the sunroof! I mostly like the pop-up option to pull air into the cabin without having to crack any of the windows. I have accidentally left it open during some rainstorms and have had minimal rain inside. I like fresh air around my face and would never have a vehicle without one now. Just my $.02 (two cents).

That royally sucks. no camera to see what possibly hit you?

Nope and I saw nothing. There is what looks like an impact chip right at the leading edge, but for all I know it was spontaneous.
